Chase: LS swaps have been taking place all
over the nation for well on a decade, and
for good reason.
They're lightweight, fuel-efficient, easy
to work on, and they make great power with
relatively few modifications.
Over the years, we've had a lot of the LS
vehicles come through our shop, like this
1955 Chevrolet, and now, thanks in large part
to a huge aftermarket offering, swapping an
LS between the fenders of your favorite muscle
car is now easier than ever.
Whether you picked up an LS from the junkyard
or you're starting out with a brand new crate
engine, there are many solutions out there
to help you bolt that block to your favorite
chassis.
In order to help you through your own swap,
we've teamed up with the guys over at JEGS
to show you a few of the components that you'll
need.
The first thing to consider when swapping
an LS into a vehicle is how it's going to
bolt to the chassis.
Rest assured that there's a vendor out there
that makes engine and transmission mounts
and crossmembers for virtually any application.
Another important item to consider when planning
for your LS swap are the headers.
Take these Hooker LS Swap Headers, for example.
They're available in a 1 3/4-inch primary,
and they're available from everything from
a '67 to '81 F-body to a Nissan 240SX and
the S13 or S14 chassis.
The final consideration when swapping an LS
into any car is the oil pan.
This pan from Chevrolet Performance allows
you to swap in almost any LS application into
your favorite muscle car.
When it comes to mounting your pre-1997 transmission
to your new LS motor, there's a couple of
different options you have.
The first option is to get a custom torque
converter.
The second, and probably easier, option is
to use one of these, which is an adapter ring
which pushes your flywheel out closer to your
transmission.
This will work with all TH400, 350, and 700R4
transmissions and the bellhousings will as
well, as they don't require an adapter to
bolt to an LS engine.
A modern engine requires modern cooling, and
specifically the LS requires the inlet and
outlet on the radiator to be on the same side.
There are several ways to accommodate this,
but the easiest way is with a kit like this
from Be Cool, which comes with all the fan
shrouds, hoses, and everything you need to
accommodate your new LS engine.
When it comes to controlling the throttle
on your LS, you have a couple of different
choices.
You've got either a cable-driven throttle
body or a drive-by-wire throttle body, and
if your wiring harness is set up for a drive-by-wire
throttle body, the simpler solution might
be to just add a pedal position sensor, which
will alleviate a lot of headaches in the long
run.
Wiring a modern LS can arguably be the most
daunting point of any project, but a lot of
aftermarket companies provide a complete solution,
like this kit from Chevrolet Performance,
which allows you to swap an LS into virtually
any application.
For those of you that want the modern capabilities
of the LS engine, but want the old-school
look and feel of a carbureted application,
Holley provides these kits, which have come
with an intake manifold that will swap onto
an LS engine, as well as a controller that
still will allow you to run coil-near-plug
as well as all of the refinements of an LS
system.
When it comes to feeding your new LS engine,
there's only a handful of options.
You can either take the stock fuel pump and
retrofit it into your current tank, you can
order a new custom tank that has a GM fuel
system assembly in it, or you can mount an
external fuel pump.
Once you have your high-pressure fuel source
figured out, it's time to think about engine
management.
What we've got here is the MSD Atomic EFI
for the LS engine.
This Atomic EFI LS Master Kit comes with what
you need to either do a return or a returnless
fuel system, and it also has a control unit
and wiring harness built right into the fuel
rails.
It also comes with a tuning unit that allows
you to select whether you want a cable-driven
throttle body or a drive-by-wire throttle
body, eliminating the necessity to re-tune
the computer or eliminate pigtails on the
wiring harness.
One of the things that makes this really cool
is the controller will allow you to compensate
for cams, nitrous, power-adder applications,
all without extensive tuning knowledge, and
directly from this box.
Another thing to consider when planning your
LS swap is the air intake system.
There are many vendors out there that provide
application-specific kits, or you can get
universal pieces, like this one from Spectre,
that comes with the mass air flow sensor port
all ready to go.
One of the final things to consider before
cranking up your LS is the front accessory
drive system.
Now, you're gonna wanna take careful measurements
and make sure that they're not interfering
with sheet metal or frame rails, but with
kits like these from Chevrolet Performance,
it's a pretty straightforward process.
These kits from Chevrolet Performance come
with everything you need, including an alternator,
A/C pump if you choose, and the power steering
pump.
As you can see here, the aftermarket has come
up with a solution to virtually any problem
you can run into while doing an LS swap.
We've only scratched the surface here, and
hopefully we've provided you with some inspiration
to start your own swap.

THE DRIVE:

[MUSIC PLAYING]
[CAR ENGINE ROARING]
MIKE MUSTO: My name
is Mike Musto.
Each week I travel the country
with the goal of showcasing
the best and baddest muscle
cars and hot rods around.
Every car has a past and
every owner a story.
welcome to the world
of "Big Muscle".
[CAR ENGINE ROARING]
MIKE MUSTO: Magazine
clippings.
Tools.
Repair manuals.
Photographs.
Telephone numbers.
Scale models.
A differential.
And, of course, an
extra engine.
These are just some of the
things we found when we
visited the garage
of Chuck Rust.
Now, on their own these items
wouldn't raise an eyebrow to
most folks, but collectively and
in this setting they set
the stage for one of the most
die-hard car guys we've
featured to date.
The difference, however, between
Chuck and the rest of
the automotive populous though,
is that not only has
he been racing his whole life,
both on two wheels are four,
but he had the innate ability
and understanding to see how
the Chevrolet Corvair, a car
once deemed unsafe at any
speed, can not only be improved
upon, but with some
extra hard-core modifications
built into one hell of a
performance machine.
CHUCK RUST: It all started--
I had an El Camino and I was
over in Manhattan Beach, and
it had a healthy 350 in it.
And I'm coming off of the light,
and right next to me is
a white Corvair,
which I'd never
even thought of Corvairs.
I always had big Chevy's.
And so I pulled ahead
and we're going,
kind of, up this uphill.
He pulls up next to me--
and this is the key thing
that's really got me--
he looked over at me and pulled
right up next to me and
turned a 90 degree and went
down a side street.
And I never forgot that.
I pull up in my van
at this party and
there's the white Corvair.
And I got out and
I looked at it.
And I'm like, Oh my God
I've got to talk to
this guy, you know?
I put the word out, and out into
the universe too, and in
two weeks this car-- a friend
of mine called me and said,
hey, I got, I got a car
you got to look at it.
And it was a complete
basket-case.
It was all apart.
The guy had blown the
transmission, but he rebuilt
it and put it together
and stuff.
Anyway, long story short, I'd
sold my dirt bike for
$2,500.00 How much did he want
for this car in its form?
$2,500.00.
It was perfect.

MIKE MUSTO: Sometimes we come
across a car that we look at
and we go, I--I-- got
to film that.
We have to film that.
So a couple weeks ago, Zach and
I were walking through a
car show and we happened
upon this.
We are right now behind the
wheel of a 1965 Chevrolet
Corvair Crown Corsair.
This is something that I--
I-- you know, I've read about
them, but I've never actually
seen before until we kind
of stumbled upon this.
What Chuck has done is actually
taken one of the
worse cars in history, and I'll
be honest with you, made
it one of the coolest
that we've driven to
date on "Big Muscle".
Think about it like this, the
flat 6-engine that used to
hang over the rear wheels is
gone, and in its place is a
mid-mounted, 283 cubic engine
V8 that revs to the moon and
sounds glorious.
now I driven a Corvair before.
In fact, I raced one, the
24-hour of the Lemons.
It was the biggest POS I've
ever driven, to the point
where you would step on the
brake and you would turn a
left at the same time because
the car just pulled to the
right so bad.
This car--
holy crap did he sort
this thing out.
I mean, you can bring it,
down shift, right?
Pitch it into the corner and
then just throttle it around.
You've got no power steering,
so you feel
everything coming through.
And rolling, and just let
it rev and rev and rev
and rev. Oh my God.
Now you've got to realize, it's
not a massive, massive
horse-power car.
I, mean it's only about 310
horse-power, but it's the way
you can utilize that power that
makes this car so good.
He's figured out the handling
of this car.
He's figured out the way
to make it work.
He's-- he's dialed it in
to a point where I--
I could be driving a Porsche
Cayman right
now, and I got news--
I wouldn't be having
as much fun.
This car is a visual and mental
assault to the senses.
I've got this massive
race mirror up here.
I can see everything
that's going on.
Not only that, I can hear
everything that's going on
because of the big
V8 behind me.
And holy [BLEEP]
is it unbelievable.
[CAR ENGINE ROARING]
CHUCK RUST: There are probably
2,500 kits made.
And on-- and I was thinking last
night I'm just going to
say 50 in the--
maybe 100 in the United
States running.
And there's a lot more
that aren't running.
And then there's some in Europe,
and there's some in
Australia, some in Sweden.
They're all over the world,
but there's not very many
running and that are set up.
[ENGINE CAR ROARING]
MIKE MUSTO: All right, so let's
talk a little bit about
what this car actually
looks like.
First of all, the mountain
design is gorgeous.
This is a really, really
slick looking car.
In stock form, you know, you
might, kind of, pass it up,
but the way Chuck has
it done its great.
From the gold paint to the
black accents, the little
skulls that run across
the rocker panel.
All these little touches
lend to a really
aggressive look and feel.
This back panel in back
of me is made out
of a composite that--
it's not going to scratch and at
the same time it's totally
vented to let heat out.
You know, you guys are looking
at me right now and I'm--I'm
wedged in this thing.
I mean, I got, you know,
basically, I can shift if I
wanted to underneath my leg.
That's how tight I
am in this car.
But I feel--
I feel good.
You know what I mean?
And the cool part is like, I
look in my review mirror and I
see this big massive
air cleaner on
the top of the motor.
And every time I hit the motor
I can see it tweak like this.
[ENGINE CAR ROARING]
MIKE MUSTO: Guys you've
got to remember
I'm driving a Corvair.
This is the car that Ralph
Nader tried to get killed
because he was like, it's
unsafe at any speed.
What Chuck has done to this car
has not only made it good,
he's made it brilliant.
And, oh my God, does it show.
I mean, take it, drop it in--
oh my God, oh, I'm in first,
drop it down into second.
Throw it in, let it rev.
Let it wind, let it
wind, let it wind.
Shift up.
Aw man, does it work.
And it works really,
really good.
[ENGINE CAR ROARING]
MIKE MUSTO: As far as balance
and everything, it's near--
near perfect balance.
It's a little bit heavier in
the back, and it's got I
believe a 55 45.
And I put--
I had to put big brakes
on the front.
I put Corvette disc brakes
from like a '78 Corvette.
The car's light, and so it
hauls it right down.
Sway bars front and rear,
which are available, but
obviously a lot of these things
are harder to find now.
And it's got eight inch rims
with 245/50-15 on the back and
seven inch on the front.
Now mind you, that's coming up
from 13s because stock is 13.
Some add 14s.
So, you know, a 15 inch
wheel and then going--
and they were, I think,
six inches wide--
so we've widened it.
We've got a 225/50-15 with an
eight inch print in the front
and a nine inch in the back.
It's got nine inches
of rubber.
I've lowered it.
I've cut the coils and
got it-- got it down.
And so that-- that seemed
to be the hot seller.
[ENGINE CAR ROARING]
MIKE MUSTO: If there's a theme
that goes on throughout this
car I'd have to say
it's balance.
You know, he's gone through
great pains in his garage by
the way, to make sure
that this was a very
well-balanced car.
Everything was done for a
reason, be it the large
race-style mirrors so you can
see all around you, from the
pressure of the clutch, to the,
you know, to the bump
stop on the bottom of the
clutch, to the gauge package,
to the mirrors, to everything
that's gone into this car to
make it Chuck's own personal
idea of what the perfect
Corvair is.
Now, you know, you've got to
remember also, that this is
the car that came before
the Chevrolet Camaro.
So you've got to wonder well,
could this have been, if
Chevrolet had maybe done a
Corvair in a mid-engine, if
this would have been the
Corvette, or kind of, the, you
know, the next rendition
of the Corvette?
Could they have gone
to a mid-engine
if it worked better?
I don't know.
Little questions like that
always, kind of,
spark the old psyche.
[ENGINE CAR REVING]
I don't think anybody would
ever consider a Corvair a
muscle car until they
see the episode.
You know, because nobody says,
like, you know, hey, I'm going
to go hot rod a Corvair.
Yeah, that doesn't
happen to often.
[ENGINE CAR REVING]
CHUCK RUST: People see this
car and they go, oh my God
they've got the motor
in the back seat.
Nine out of ten guys go,
that's where Chevy
should have put it.
That's what they should
have done.
And maybe someday the Corvette
will be that, but to right
now, this is what it is.
Yeah.
MIKE MUSTO: Sometimes we come
across cars that not only
surprise us, but inspire us.
They go against the grain of
conventional wisdom, and they
asked the question
of, what if?
This Crown Corsair right
here is such a car.
And even though it's not the
fastest car we've ever driven
on "Big Muscle" it's
a rule-breaker.
And that's something well-- that
this show is all about.
You know, V8 engine,
mid-section, gone is the rear
flat-6 motor.
It does everything the way
that owner Chuck Ross
wanted it to do.
So guys, as always, thank
you for joining us.
And we will absolutely
see you again next
week on "Big Muscle".
-Hey, that sounded
pretty good.
Yeah!
MIKE MUSTO: Yahtzee!
-Yahtzee.
[LAUGHTER]
-Good?
Do you want to try one more?
MIKE MUSTO: I could do another
one but I'm OK.
[LAUGHTER]
-I think that works.
-All right.
-OK.

The Duramax 2.8L Turbo - Diesel Insights

The Duramax 2.8L Turbo - Diesel Insights

Duramaxtuner:

On Diesel Insights we're gonna take apart
the 2.8 Liter Duramax Turbocharger
and show you how it works.
(rock music)
Today we're gonna jump
on the 2.8 Liter Duramax.
This is kind of a switching gears
from our past videos over
the past couple weeks
about the LB7, LLY, LML Turbocharger.
We're gonna go on the little guy today.
And if you look at this
thing man it is tiny.
It's a 2.8 Liter engine;
makes about 180 horsepower
from the factory.
This is a Garret Turbocharger,
for the record it's called a GTV 1752 VKL,
and it's called a 52 because
on the compressor side we have a discharge
a back wall of 52 millimeters,
and that's gonna be there to
support that 180 horsepower.
(rock music)
The 2.8 Liter Duramax has
been a surprise winner for us.
Almost right out of the
gate, people started buying
these things in droves and tuning them.
It's turned into a performance truck.
A turbocharger this
small we're gonna expect
very quick spool-up, a good response,
and good control with that power level.
First thing I want to
draw your attention to,
is how little this inlet is.
It's a 35 millimeter inlet
on the exhaust there.
Downpipe, 47 millimeters.
So already you can tell we're playing
in the Little Leagues today, right?
On the compressor side,
there's a 37 mil inducer,
52 mil exducer, and on the
turbine side we got a 41 by 36.
So pretty well matched turbine.
On the turbine side,
we have a variable geometry setup.
It has vains that are controlled
by an external control module.
So, on the larger Dmaxes that
controller is integral to
the turbocharger on
this one it's external.
It's got an actuator and a rod.
And that rod'll fit on
here and actuate the veins.
I'm gonna give you a little
better view, over here.
So, here we have one that's been run hard.
I'm gonna take off this
cage around the vanes.
Now this cage is made
of Inconel, heavy piece.
There's the turbine itself
and here's the vanes
and there's 11 of 'em,
and they are controlled
by the actuator via that rod.
So, when you're pulling
away from a stoplight
you got the vanes close
to a hundred percent.
They'll be about 85 percent
under low load situations
to give you that good throttle
response, good takeoff.
And as the load and RPM come
up as you start to stand
on the throttle and the RPMs climb,
you'll see the vanes open
and increase the amount
of turbine gas flow.
Now if you have the
Tow/Haul button actuated,
you come to a stop and you
use that grade braking,
you use the compression braking,
those vanes'll close back up
and create a high pressure
situation in the exhaust manifold
and that's gonna give you
that compression braking
that extra braking to save on your brakes.
Kind of a neat setup.
As far as modifying these guys,
what we've tried a couple
larger compressor wheels,
we've gone to a 41 mil compressor,
which has netted us about an
extra 35 horsepower so far,
and then we have a 44 mil compressor,
which you see on here right now,
and that's a quite a
bit taller unit as well,
so we're hoping for big
things out of this one.
Further limitation is this turbocharger
has a very small exhaust
side, and on the cover
there's not a whole lot
of room for anti-surge.
As you start to go to those
bigger compressor wheels
you're gonna lose the
ability to control anti-surge
or to control surge and to really
keep drivability solid where it should be.
Hope you enjoyed this

Who Makes the Best V8 Engine and Why

Who Makes the Best V8 Engine and Why

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, today I'm going to
answer Eddy Vasquez's question, who makes
the best v8 engines these days, now to
answer that question I'm only going to
be talking about a regular v8 engine,
I'm not going to be talking about
supercars that cost hundreds of
thousands of dollars, and to answer
correctly we'll get a little bit of
history here, in 1915 Cadillac made the
first really mass-produced v8 engine,
which was a 5.4 liter v8 engine, now even
though it was sort of mass-produced, it
was still in a luxury car and it was
rather expensive car, the first really
mass-produced car that used v8 engines
were the Fords,
in 1932 Henry Ford made a flathead v8
and that was the first really
mass-produced v8 used in normal cars, not
used in either luxury cars or in trucks
now, Henry discovered how to make them so
they worked good, but there are less
expensive to build as an example, those
v8's only had three main
bearings on the crank, instead of the
usual five main bearings, so it cost less
money to make, so that made it more
affordable to put in regular cars, now the
main point of putting a v8 in was for
more power, and since it was a v8 there
were four on the left side and four on
the right, so that v8 engine could fit in
a vehicle they had a four-cylinder
engine because it's basically the same
length of the four-cylinder engine, you
couldn't get a big six in there or even
a straight eight, that would require a
gigantic hood to fit it into, the V8 fit
into a smaller space, and as it put out
more power people like them, you can
always get an option you get a
four-cylinder engine or you can get a v8
engine, people who wanted power hey they put
in a v8 like Bonnie and Clyde,
they always stole Ford's that had v8 is they
could
so you get a lot of power
out of a v8, but times are changing as an
example, a modern-day four-cylinder
engine, heck it can put out more
horsepower than a v8 engine did just 20
years ago, so you can get a lot of power
out of
a four cylinder engine which is making a
lot of these v8 becoming kind of like
the dinosaurs, their sort of towards the
edge of extinction, you'll see that a lot
of companies including Ford, are going
more toward turbocharged GDI gasoline
engines that are v6 instead of v8, they
can still put out a lot of horsepower,
but they get a lot better gas mileage
so in modern cars, at least most of the
American cars
the v8 engines are becoming more and
more specialized, as an example they use
them in all their racing cars, you get a
v8 and a Dodge Hellcat, you can get a
v8 in a Mustang, and you can get a v8 in
a Corvette, now I know GM is coming up
with I think they call it a zr1
and it's going to have 755 horsepower
but it's going to cost over 120,000
dollars, so I really don't include that
as a normal v8 engine myself, so I'll
start with the LS9 which puts out
638 horsepower, it's got a supercharged
v8, now I have to say it's a
pretty good engine, it's an old-fashioned
design it's still a pushrod engine, it
doesn't have overhead cams, it's pretty
much a gigantic gas hog in that kind of
form with the supercharger on it, it's
not gonna get very good gas mileage it's
only got the regular valves
per cylinder, it doesn't have four
valves per cylinder and it just got push
rods in it, it's a pretty old fashioned
design, but it's a pretty strong engine,
now let's compare that to the Shelby
gt500 that at least as of this time was
the most horsepower that Ford sold out
of the factory, and it was 662 horsepower
now the Ford Mustang engine was a much
more modern design, it had quad overhead
cams, variable valve timing, and it also
had a supercharger to give it all that
power, now the original ones had some
overheating problems, but they figured
that out as time went on, it's a more
modern engine, if you drove it not insane
you would get better gas mileage than
the GM engine, but I mean really you
got to take into consideration people that
buy
those kinds of vehicles are driving like
maniacs
I had one of the GT's for a while, heck I
was getting like three miles a gallon
in the thing because I was driving at
full speed all the time and that's
pretty much what you're gonna get in a
race car if you drive it full bore all
the time, the Ford engine had insane power
there's no arguing that, I thought hey
it's the fastest thing that you're ever
gonna get drive on the street that you
can buy out of a factory, but that was
before I drove a Dodge Challenger
Hellcat, that thing had even more
horsepower
it had 707 horsepower with a
supercharger on it, that's an insane
amount of horsepower,
now the Hellcat engine it's like the GM
engine it's an old style
it's a pushrod engine, it's not a modern
style by any stretch of the imagination,
but I do have to say, they've pretty much
perfected that design, if you want
horsepower and speed, say you're building
your own vehicle, they set it up that you
can buy what's called a hell crate
engine, you can buy just the engine and
put it in the vehicle that you want
because they know with that much horsepower
there's guys that want to get their
hands on that engine, and I know
people are gonna say, hey your always
booing chrysler products, but in
this case I do have to say that the
Hellcat engine is the best v8 engine
that's presently being built for normal
cars, if you can call that a normal car,
considering the power they put out and
the speed that people are driving, them I
personally haven't seen any big serious
problems with them, other than people
wrapping the cars around trees and stuff
and that's not the engine's fault, remember
we're talking about best v8 engine here
because being a pushrod engine, it's a
simpler engine, there's less stuff to
break on it, and really as far as I can see
in the future, this is probably the end
of the dinosaur age and for most intensive
purposes of mass production v8
engines will probably just start to fade
away, except for crazy gear heads like
that new Corvette that they're talking
about bringing out, if it starts at
120,000 dollars then that's becoming an
exotic car and there's lots of exotic
cars out there that have v8 engines, v12
engine, but hey for mass-produce engines
the v8 engine will
probably be just like in the Road Warrior
where Mad Max was driving one and they
said, it's the last of the great v8
because when you really think about it,
hey v8 engines were made originally for
extra power, now that even a small
four-cylinder engine could put out a ton
of power, the v8 engines really aren't
necessary, yeah I mean you can get them
to put out almost 800 horsepower, but
really who needs 800 horsepower if you
can get 300 horsepower on a little bitty
four-cylinder engine, hey that's plenty
enough to drive us around in our
vehicles, one of the early cars out
there, it only had one horsepower it got
people around, so we really don't need
800 horsepower cars to get ourselves from
here to there, and sure I for one will
miss the great rumble of the v8, they got
a unique sound to them, but as time moves
on I guess we got to move on too, and
since this is the Thursday segment where I
answer a viewers question, place your own
question on the YouTube comments below
and I'll pick the best ones to make a
single video to answer your questions, and
where else can you find a guy with 50
years experience of fixing cars to
answer your own question with a video, so
if you never want to miss another one of
my new car repair videos, remember to
ring that Bell!

El Camino - Everything You Need to Know | Up to Speed

El Camino - Everything You Need to Know | Up to Speed

Donut Media:

(tires screeching)
- The El Camino has been accused of being
the mullet of cars for too long.
Ha! Hilarious! Get it?
It's a sedan in the front,
and a truck in the back,
it's like a mullet!
I bet you haven't heard that one before!
You know what, pal?
The El Camino is truly one
of the most unique cars
to ever come out of Detroit.
From humble beginnings hauling hay
to later, hauling ass.
This is everything you need to know
to get up to speed on the Chevy El Camino.
(retro arcade music)
- Yeah, yeah yeah, I know,
the El Camino was not
the first car truck thing
to go on sale in the States.
Ford did it first, with the Ranchero 1957.
Ford marketed the Ranchero
as "more than a car,
more than a truck," and it was a hit,
and Chevrolet took notice.
- Well yeah, I noticed.
- The first El Camino
was brought to market
two years after the Ranchero in 1959.
Chevy sold over 22,000 units in
the first year of production,
but it got worse in
1960 and sales dropped.
Baby boomer families were growing,
so they needed more than two seats,
and the cargo space wasn't that great
compared to a real truck.
Basically, Chevy missed
out on both markets.
And the El Camino was
discontinued the following year.
- Wait, what?
What did he mean by discontinued?
- Meanwhile, the Ford Ranchero
was doing pretty good.
It was now based on the Ford Falcon,
just like the Mustang.
Chevy took note of Ford's
experimentation and said
"Hey, we can do that!"
Chevy brought back the El Camino in 1964
and this time its sister car
was the frickin Chevelle.
The Chevelle Super
Sport was one of Chevy's
first entries into the slowly escalating
muscle car arms race.
So it would make sense
to offer this performance
in the El Camino, right?
- Yeah.
Yeah blonders.
That's a good idea.
- Chevy didn't think so.
They did not offer the El Camino SS.
Yet.
Chevy was still determined
to market the El Camino
as a truck with the comforts of a car,
as opposed to a car with
the utility of a truck.
However, as the 1964 model year went by,
Chevy eventually offered
a 327 cubic inch V8,
making a decent 300 horsepower.
- Pretty, pretty, pretty good.
- From 1964 to like
1980, the design changed
every
single
year.
Every single year.
1964
1965
1966
1967
1968
1969
1970
1971
1972
1973
1974
1975
1976
1977
1978
1979
1980.
But the philosophy stayed the same:
practicality and luxury,
all in one, just like me.
- (wheezing laughter)
- The El Camino took
the undeniably beautiful
looks of the Chevelle and mixed it with
the practicality of a truck.
Chevy continued to give the El Camino
more and more power and it
got better and better looking.
Look at the 1968 and 1969 models.
Those are some good looking cars.
And if you say otherwise,
you're a (bleep) liar, Mark!
I know you're watching, Scott told me.
Scott told me you watch all my shit.
You follow me on Instagram, Mark.
Chevy sold the most El Caminos in 1968
because it was offered with Chevy's 396 V8
and it made 375 horsepower.
The gloves were starting to come off.
In 1969, Chevy finally gave the people
the El Camino SS,
(cheering)
with a special blacked out grill,
disc brakes and powerlocks and windows
just like a racecar.
But Chevy wasn't done,
because the 1970 El Camino SS
might be one of the most
unique muscle cars of the era.
While you can still get the 396,
Chevy raised the stakes with the 454 V8.
This colossal big block
made 450 horsepower,
and a whopping 500 foot pounds of torque.
That's enough power to pull
your neighbor's house down.
Don't ask me how I know that.
(bell rings)
It also came with a four speed
short ratio transmission.
Long story short, it hauled ass.
(engine revs)
Or, whatever else you wanted to haul,
because it had a truck bed in the back.
Like all good things,
including every
single
one
of my beautiful hamsters, the El Camino SS
met a swift end.
In 1971, Chevy saw the writing on the wall
with the looming gas crisis and started
to detune their big block offerings
to be more fuel-efficient.
This is also the part where the El Camino
gets noticeably less attractive,
but can you blame it?
It was in an abusive
relationship with Chevy.
How would you feel?
You'd probably get a little ugly too.
- This one, real (bleep) ugly.
- The gas crisis didn't
kill the El Camino.
Quite the opposite, actually.
Despite being the largest
and nearly the slowest
El Camino ever, the 1973 model
was by far Chevy's best-selling.
The next year the El Camino reached
the pinnacle of luxury with the
carpeted door panels and wood
grain instrument panel trim.
- That's fancy. That's fancy.
- Real fancy.
- If Chevy couldn't make
the El Camino more powerful,
well gosh darn it, they
were gonna make it fancier.
The fifth gen El Camino arrived in 1978
with a few different trim levels
including the Black Knight,
which I only mention
because that is literally
the most kickass name
for a trim level ever.
Chevy had to change the
name of the Black Knight
to the Royal Knight in 1979
because of copyright issues.
Wait, who owns the
copyright to Black Knight?
- Martin Lawrence is the Black Knight.
- When the gas prices of
the 70s came to an end,
Chevy ushered in the 80s
with a new El Camino,
with zero changes to the body
and only minor tweaks to the engine.
Thus began the twilight of the El Camino,
and no, I'm not talking about vampires.
The Elkie lived out its final
years with few highlights.
In 1985 Chevy started
producing the El Camino
in Mexico to save on costs,
but it didn't last long,
because the El Camino
finally left us in 1987.
Just like my dad.
The death of the El
Camino was a somber one,
but the fact that it wasn't
being sold in showrooms anymore
didn't stop people from loving it.
The El Camino is a folk
hero in the car world,
a solid performer who wasn't
afraid to get down and dirty.
If you have the chance to
buy an El Camino, do it.
- Just do it!
- There have been a million rumors
for a million years now that
Chevy's gonna bring back
the El Camino but I'm
not holding my breath.
- (heavy breathing)
- Would this ruin some of
the legend of this car?
That's always a possibility.
But the way Detroit is
pouring out new muscle,
a brand new El Camino could
actually be pretty tight.
That's everything you need
to know to get up to speed
on the Chevy El Camino.
Would you rather have a
classic one or a new one?
Let me know in the comments below.
Have you ever (bleep) in an El Camino?
You ever (bleep) in an El Camino?
Everyone send me a dollar
so I can buy a Lamborghini.
And as always: like,
subscribe, comment, share,
tag your friend who likes an El Camino,
tag your friend who has a mullet,
ask him what's wrong with him.

Build & Battle 3: Gymkhana GRID! Chevy Camaro vs Nissan 350z Faceoff EP.1

Build & Battle 3: Gymkhana GRID! Chevy Camaro vs Nissan 350z Faceoff EP.1

Hoonigan Project Cars:

- [Ron] Oohhhh
(laughter).
- [Alex] Yeah.
- [Ron] Wow!
These are aggressive rat turds.
(upbeat music)
- Oooo, gas.
- Kids, don't try this at home.
- [Vin] That's a dead rat, dude!
(screeching)
(door opening)
- What's up, Vin?
- What's up, Ron?
Welcome back, Build and
Battle, Season Three.
If you've watched season one and two,
you already know that his is our take
on a competitive build show.
And, one that doesn't suck.
- Well, you might've notice
that our surroundings
are a little bit different
this time around.
We actually moved the set
from the side of the building
to the front of the building.
But, it's all the same
size, trust us, we measured.
Speaking of things that are the same,
let's go over the rules.
- All right, rule number one,
the builds have to be
affordable, and attainable.
They gotta stick within the budget.
(upbeat music)
Rule number two, less
drama, more education.
This show's about the builds.
(upbeat music)
Rule number three, the car's gotta compete
at the end of the series.
There is no backup plan.
If you don't finish your car, you lose.
(upbeat music)
All right, so you've seen on season one,
we did off road racing.
On season two, we did drag racing.
And this season, we're doing something
completely different, Gymkhana grid.
- Gymkhana grid mixes all
kind of genres of driving.
So you have some GRIP racing,
you have rally style driving,
you have drifting, even
a little bit of drag,
all in one type of head's
up race against the clock.
- So the tricky part about
these builds, is that
your car has to do so many
different disciplines.
You need a bit of drag
racing, you need a bit
of auto cross agility, you
need it to be able to slide.
I feel like it's gonna be
pretty challenging to build
a car for 10, 000 bucks to do all that.
- But at the same time,
that's the coolest part about
Gymkhana grid, is you
see anything from Miatas,
to EVOs and STIs, to,
you know, Ken Block level
rally cross cars, all lining
up together on the same course.
That's what makes this
rally exciting for me,
to see what these guys
pick out, and how different
the two builds are going to be.
- And to introduce you to our host,
the Build and Battle Season Three
(fast rock music)
Ron Car!
(laughter)
- That was intense.
(dramatic orchestral music)
(record scratches)
(door slams)
- Welcome to Build and
Battle Season Three.
Brand new set, as you can see.
Two brand new builders,
and a brand new challenge.
On one side, we got Josh
Mason, who you may remember
from Garage Garage, and
drifting his big orange Camaro.
(tires screeching)
(car engine rumbling)
You put in some work, huh?
- We've been putting in
some work, that's for sure.
- Now on the other side, we got Suppy,
Scotto's mysterious friend
from the East Coast.
(upbeat music)
So we're gonna check out
what Suppy is building.
Eh, it's a 350 Z.
Actually this thing doesn't look bad dude.
(upbeat music)
- Yeah it's actually really nice.
Kind of a shame to mess it up.
- [Ron] How much did you
get it for, first off?
- [Suppy] Uh, 2200 we paid for this thing.
- [Ron] 2200, okay, okay.
Military Base model.
- Yeah, and the guy cleaned it out for us.
- [Ron] Wow.
- There's a couple coupon
books in here, I think.
- [Ron] Oh, dang!
This side looks pretty good.
- [Suppy] Yeah, yeah, don't go there.
Don't go there.
(laughter)
You should stay on this side,
it looks better on the one side.
- [Ron] It looks better
on that, yeah, yeah.
I haven't even introduced
this dude right here.
What's your name, man?
- Jamo.
- [Ron] Jamo, you're gonna be helping out
Suppy on this build?
- Yeah.
- [Suppy] Who's helping who, I don't know.
(laughter)
- [Ron] So you're the fabricator,
you're the real,
- I'm the mechanic.
- [Ron] you make the magic happen.
- Yep.
- You're the mechanic.
How many miles does it have?
- Ahhh, 180,000 I think it's got on it.
- [Ron] Okay, okay.
So this VQ's about ready to blow up.
- [Suppy] Yes, yes.
But it is for sale.
- The VQ is?
- Yes.
- [Ron] Oh it's not ready to blow up.
- [Suppy] (laughing) No it's good.
- The VQ's fine,
it's good, it runs mint.
- It's good, it runs,
it runs awesome.
- [Ron] Honestly though, for 2200,
this is a pretty damn good platform.
- It is a really good
platform for her, for 2200.
- [Ron] And so, what year is this?
- This is, uh, '04.
- [Ron] Is the trans a CD09, or is it--
- It is, it is the CD09, but I think
it's the weaker of the two.
Hopefully it doesn't break.
- [Ron] These cars are
really good for drifting.
Getting super popular for that.
And, one of my least favorite things is,
the sound that they make.
- Well, that's not gonna be a problem,
because that motor's comin' out.
- [Ron] Okay, okay.
- We're gonna make, I don't
know if it's gonna sound
any better, but we're gonna
put a Honda motor in it.
So, it's a...
maybe it'll sound better.
(engine starting up)
- Oh, yeah.
- [Ron] Okay, okay, okay.
- I'm tellin ya, we're done.
I don't know how we--
(hooting)
Look at that, perfect.
(engine revving)
- [Ron] I like how Jamo went full
New York City Safety Inspection mode.
He's like, yeah, horn works.
- Yeah, horn works.
- [Ron] Blinkers on.
- [Jamo] Blinkers work, man.
- Put the stickers on, we're outta here.
- [Ron] If you think about
it, this car doesn't need
a lot of work to be driftable, and quick,
but, this is Build and Battle.
- Yes.
- You're gonna do some stuff to this.
You're gonna actually work
backwards a little bit.
- Yes, we're gonna take a running car,
make it not run, and
then make it run again.
- [Ron] I'm excited to see
what happens with this thing.
(upbeat music)
Well, well, well.
Josh Mason, you could not have picked
a more opposite car to Suppy's
build for Gymkhana grid.
- Why not?
- Third gen Camaro.
- [Josh] Why not?
- [Ron] Why not?
- Why not?
(rock music)
- [Ron] Oh, what's up Alex?
- Oh hey, how's it goin buddy?
- [Ron] Good, good.
Josh's partner here.
- That's right, gonna help him--
- [Ron] Partner in fabrication.
- Build this bad boy
up into a working car.
- Alex is definitely my
first call on my list so,
confident, me and Alex will get this thing
drift ready, no problem.
- [Ron] Don't get me wrong,
third gens are sick but,
for Gymkhana grid, it's
kind of an oddball pick.
- The only hard part
is, is that everything,
there's no one that
makes like, angle kits,
or suspension kits, I mean,
it's very slim to none.
But that's the cool thing about
building something like this, is that,
learning, trial and error, hey,
if we need to change this,
we break this, whatever,
let's start all over and
improve on what we started with,
and let's just have a good time.
We got this thing,
actually, for 300 bucks.
Believe it or not.
No motor, no trans, I believe it was even
clean title too, and it was
hear locally in Lynwood.
- [Ron] Honestly for the price, it's ah,
well, not I'm not gonna
lie, that's pretty bad.
- The owner even had on the listing that,
this thing possibly had rats living in it.
Thank God they're not, but, I mean,
we still gotta clean
up a bunch of rat poop.
- [Ron] I see you have the uh, the
late 80's Camaro factory option.
- [Josh] Oh yeah.
- [Ron] Trojans.
Please tell me that came with the car.
- It did man.
- [Ron] You didn't just
put that there as a prop.
- No, it did.
- [Ron] Trojans, and what looks like
little shards of a Modello top.
Whoever had this thing,
was definitely a partier.
- Yeah dude, he was living life
like a real third gen Camaro owner.
- [Ron] Oh!
(laughter)
- [Josh] Yeah.
- [Ron] Wow.
- [Josh] Mm-hmm.
- [Ron] These are aggressive rat turds.
- [Josh] Yeah.
- [Ron] Dude, this thing
just keeps on givin'.
- [Josh] Oh yeah, I mean,
it came with a spare,
like, we're set.
- [Alex] That's our
drift spare right there.
- [Ron] Have you ever built
a Gymkhana grid car before?
- No, I have not.
I've build plenty of drift cars
but never a Gymkhana grid car.
- [Ron] Well, here we
go, this is the template.
- [Josh] It's my chance.
- This is the beginning.
All right, so now that we've got this
oddball car combo figured out,
let's get the build goin'.
(upbeat music)
- [Ron] Do you smell gas?
- I smell gas.
- [Ron] I smell fuel.
- Oooh, gas.
Hey, no one's smoking around here, right?
(laughter)
(upbeat music)
(crashing metal and steel)
(clanking)
- Here's your knuckle busters.
- [Ron] Oh, man.
- That's what we live for.
- There's no torque arm.
So the first major issue we have,
is extremely important.
This car, whoever had it last
took the torque arm out of it.
So right now the diff can
literally just, do this.
There's nothing keeping it at an angle.
And we really need that part.
So we're gonna have to source one,
from craigslist, or buy a new one, or
something, but this is--
- Probably make one.
- Yeah, we'll probably make one,
but this is a big problem for us.
- We clear side or what?
- No it doesn't!
It's ain't clear bro!
- My, my side, my side's clear bro!
- It ain't clear!
- [Alex] Well how 'bout now?
- Oh shit, there you go, you got it.
(upbeat music)
- Well, a Gymkhana grid is a combination
of road racing and drifting.
So, when you watch the
pros do it, like Ken Block,
then he's gonna go straight at a corner,
or straight at a barrel, or
whatever the obstacle is,
and then he's gonna initiate a drift.
And then he's gonna drift around
whatever that obstacle is.
And then he's gonna
straight shoot it straight
to the next obstacle, and
do a drift around that.
And of course with
Gymkhana, we're not goin'
for a great amount of angle,
or, you are doing style,
but you're not doing angle.
So in drifting you're
kinda goin for the biggest
angle you can possible.
But that's not always
the fastest way to do it.
And that's the number one
difference in Gymkhana,
is you're going for speed,
over anything else.
- Drifting is more about
sliding, and tire smoke,
and I think Gymkhana
grid kinda combines the,
I guess, the grid part of it.
So, it's a time thing
rather than a judge thing.
Whoever gets to the end first wins,
there's a definitive winner, other than,
where drifting it's more
like figure skating, and
you're doing to please somebody else.
So, I guess that would be the big, major
difference between the two.
- Its definitely a balance
of what Alex said when
it comes to hard charging,
but at the same time,
you do want to throw that angle,
but you kinda wanna keep it
somewhat minimal, to maintain
that consistency, and that flow.
- And be faster than the other guy.
It's what it's all about.
- All right, so it's
been about 37 seconds,
and these dudes are putting in work.
Look at that pile.
Yeah,
damn.
How nice and gross is that interior?
- I wanna shower like five
times when I get to the hotel.
(laughter)
- [Ron] Yeah, you can
kinda see what the color
it used to be like when
this thing was brand new.
- I'm pretty sure when I took
that certain seatbelt off,
a weird substance came out of it.
- [Ron] Wow, Okay.
We're just gonna go ahead
and say that's assembly lube.
- [Josh] Anti-seize or something.
- [Ron] Anti-seize for sure.
Now that you guys have
this thing partially apart,
or, I don't know, pretty damn apart,
what are, are you seeing
any challenges, you seen,
any plans,
you getting a more grand
vision of what's goin on?
- I'm focused more on
just getting everything
out of it, in like a timely fashion,
to where I can kinda like
really concentrate on
what I wanna do, like for
the next plan, you know?
- [Ron] Alex, what do you think?
You seeing any challenges
yet, or is this still
kinda the debuilding phase?
- Again, earlier we found
the torque arm's missing,
so we're gonna have to build another one,
or replace it, or something.
But that's the only
thing we've found so far.
This particular car
doesn't have this brake.
But we ordered some, and
we're gonna replace that.
It comes in a kit from like Gegs, or
you can get it anywhere really.
We're gonna do an in-line hand
brake to a single caliper--
- [Ron] Oh cool.
- On the back.
- [Ron] Okay, and that rear
end can take the kind of power
you guys are gonna be throwing at it?
- Yeah, um, I'm not exactly sure how much
these two can take, but
it's a 7510 volt, I believe.
We got a new rigging painted for it,
it'll be a little stronger,
but, big thing is, is
we just gotta weld it,
and it should be able to handle,
like the 450 horse power
we're gonna throw at it.
- I wanna know how many
cars Ron as gutted.
How many cars have you gutted, Ron?
- [Ron] Um, all the cars I've
gutted have been with Scotto,
so...
like 60.
(laughs)
Man, out here in Suppy's chop shop.
- Oh yeah.
- [Ron] Got this thing all apart.
- We're gettin' there.
- [Ron] you guys figured out
the trunk situation too.
- Yeah, the lock was messed up,
so you gotta break a bunch
of stuff to get it open.
- [Ron] Nice.
Still pretty intact, no sawzall.
- No, not yet, not yet.
- [Ron] Not yet.
- That's later.
Maybe tomorrow.
- [Ron] So, so far, I
know you aren't fully
into debuilding but,
do you see any issues?
Do you have any new plans?
- I just realized this was all welded in.
So, that's gonna be a
little bit of an issue.
That's gonna take some cutting.
I was trying to plant the
cage somewhere back here
on top of the rails.
- [Ron] Okay.
- But, with this in the
way I can't do that,
so maybe tomorrow, I'm
just gonna saw it off.
Take it off as a whole unit.
- [Ron] It looks kinda structural.
- Ah, no with the cage in
there, we'll make it back up.
- [Ron] Okay.
- So there's no point of
having the cage and that, so.
- [Ron] Nice.
- I'm hoping anyway.
- [Ron] And you guys are planning to run,
I think I mentioned this earlier,
still keeping the trans that's in here.
Factory trans.
- Yeah, yeah.
Basically, we're keeping everything
from the firewall back.
So the transmission stays,
the driveshaft stays,
the rear end stays, just the
motor's gettin' replaced.
- Cool.
- But we're,
But, we're also doing the harness,
so this harness is all coming out.
'Cause this car runs on
canba, so if you remove
one thing, something else might not work.
So it's easier just to
replace the whole thing.
Jamo's gonna do the harness,
and he's gonna build the
interior harness also.
So, just a couple lights, fan
switches, just simple stuff.
- [Ron] Nice.
Jamo.
- Yeah.
- [Ron] These West Coast
cars are nice right?
No rust or anything?
- Yo, for real.
- [Ron] I don't smell one
whiff of WD-40, this is wild.
Just like last season on Build and Battle,
at the end of the build,
both teams are gonna
be judged in three different categories.
Build quality, Style,
and Concept Originality.
Each category is worth a
certain amount of points,
and only one team can win that category.
Then, before the final
race, the team that spent
the least amount of money, gets points.
And that's factoring in
all the parts they sold.
Finally, on race day,
both teams will compete
in a best of five head's
up match, being awarded
points for the fastest overall lap time,
the quickest holeshot, and of course,
winning a majority of the races.
All categories total a
value of 1,000,006 points.
'Cause we're classy like that.
After all five races have been run,
the team with the most
points wins their car,
as well as bragging rights.
While the loser has to sell their car,
with all the proceeds
going to Heroes and Horses.
- Where are we goin with it?
- Let's stick it in the save corner.
- See that's what I was afraid of, fluids.
- All right, well,
we'll leave it this way,
we'll lean it up against this cabinet.
It will be good like that.
- [Ron] Dude, some of this shit is held in
with rivets, are you kidding me?
- [Josh] Oh yeah dude,
we're gonna drill 'em out.
- Bro.
I'm gonna (beep) cut-off
wheel mount, dude.
- [Josh] Yeah, we can
just cut the door out now.
- [Ron] Honest, that's what
I was just about to say.
I'm thinking about just
cuttin' the whole door out.
- [Josh] That's what I'd do.
(sawing)
(cracking)
(upbeat music)
(sawing)
(clang)
(thud)
- All right, as you
could tell, dark outside,
big-ass pile of parts, and garbage,
and parts, and gutted cars.
- Need a spring?
- [Ron] I'm good.
You know what's wild to see,
how much crap you don't need
when you're building a race car.
- It's crazy, right?
I mean, even just to guess,
that's probably a good
maybe 500 pounds so far.
I mean, even just these
door pieces that we cut out,
it's a good amount, it's
probably a good 50 pounds each,
that's already 100
pounds out of the doors,
all the interior, that's
gotta be another 300 pounds.
Alex is carrying.
(bang)
- [Ron] So now that you
guys are pretty much
down to a shell, you got
a little bit more to go
here in the engine bay, but--
- Yeah, just a little bit.
It's kinda like, now
it's it's like the stuff
I really don't like doing,
like taking out fuel lines and
gettin' dirty where there's black widows,
and spiders and all that good stuff.
But, ya know, it's part of
the, part of the process.
- [Ron] It's part of the game.
Looking at this right now, what
are your plans for tomorrow?
- I wanna see if I can If I can
bring in the motor tomorrow,
start taking a look at it
maybe while Alex is doing
some suspension work,
maybe some cage work,
maybe some prep for cage work,
and we're gonna ditch
these old hard lines,
because God knows what's in 'em.
So, we'll probably run all new soft line,
like some braided stuff,
AN fittings and whatnot.
I'm confident, I know Alex
is confident; havin' fun.
- [Ron] Nice, nice.
Where you guys at on budget right now?
- On budget, as far as last I checked
I think we're under budget.
- [Ron] Okay.
- So, I think we're
like 2000 under budget.
I haven't asked so not sure yet.
Yeah, I mean,
Plus too, of all the stuff
that we've kinda like,
pulled out of the car, I really don't,
I don't even know if I wanna
waste my time even selling it.
If it was like hundreds
and hundreds of dollars
that we could bring back, I
think we're gonna value time
versus money, I think, at this point.
- And the amount of time it
would take to sell this stuff,
it would take us like, the whole show, so.
- [Ron] There's no drift
tax on pretty much anything
in this here pile.
- No, maybe after
this show, there's gonna be.
We started the third gen Camaro drift tax.
- [Ron] That's really what
this show's all about.
Suppy, y'all's side's
cleaned up and everything,
you guys got parts on racks.
- [Suppy] Yes.
- [Ron] You guys got everything organized.
- Just gotta find a
place to do my pedicure.
(laughter)
- [Ron] And I feel like I
heard you guys say earlier,
you guys got a scrap pile, and
you guys got a for sale pile.
- Yes.
- Yes, yes.
- [Jamo] We're splitting it up.
- We're splitting up
the scrap piles outside.
The for-sale pile's behind the door.
That pile down there is all the stuff
that's going back in.
And also the stuff on the
rack is going back in.
- [Ron] Oh you got a go-back-in pile.
Yeah, I guess you need that bumper,
some support, everything.
Well, you guys put in some
work on gutting this interior.
Any challenges you see so far?
Any problems you're running into?
- Not yet, not yet.
I think it's pretty much, other
than the late start today,
I think we're pretty on track.
- The limit of tools.
We just needed some longer extensions,
and some swivels, but we managed to do it.
That's why we busted our knuckle.
(laughter)
- [Ron] So what's the plan for tomorrow?
You guys trying to pull
the motor tomorrow?
- Definitely the motor's
comin' out tomorrow.
- While he's taking out the motor,
I'm gonna take out the rest of this stuff.
I gotta cut this out, this was unplanned.
We have to cut this back support out.
And then start mocking up the hoop.
- [Ron] You goin full cage, half cage?
- I think, if we have some
time, we might do the full,
but as of right now
it's kinda lookin' like
just a half cage.
And if we have time at
the end, I'll just add it.
- [Ron] Pop in some over
fenders on this thing?
Rocket Bunny kit?
You getting, you getting--
- No, no.
(laughter)
- No, we don't have the money for it.
- [Ron] Do you guys have
a motor picked out yet?
- Yes, we have the Honda motor coming.
- Oh, it's on its way.
- Hopefully it comes tomorrow.
Yeah, yeah,
I think one of the guys
is picking it up tomorrow.
- [Ron] Nice.
- So hopefully, we can mate
it to the transmission,
make sure it fits.
- [Ron] And where are you
guys at on budget right now,
do you know?
- I think we got like
2000 or like $1800 left
or something like that.
And we still have some stuff to sell.
Hopefully this motor sells, the sell pile.
Scrap the cat and whatnot, so.
- [Ron] Yeah, I guess
of all places to sell
a catalytic converter,
California's the number one spot.
- Is it?
- Exactly.
- [Ron] Yeah, 'cause you gotta pop it out,
you gotta pop it back on for smog.
I'm just kidding any Federal
people watching this right now,
keep those cats on the whole time,
no matter what your build is.
So you guys got a little more stripping
to do tomorrow on this car.
I just respect the clean
workplace right now.
Look at this, I'm impressed.
All right, so that
wraps it up for day one.
One of my favorite parts of
building, which is unbuilding.
It's the part that I'm personally best at,
I'm not good at the building part at all.
But, yeah it's impressive
to see these guys
turn these piles of parts into money.
Well, that's actually
probably not worth anything.
But anyway, we're gonna leave guys,
we're gonna catch back
up with 'em tomorrow.
(upbeat music)
Motor's already out by
the time I got here.
These dudes don't wait.
(scratch)
What'd you Google on last
night, on how to weld?
- I Googled last night how to TIG weld.
Someone promised me they gonna teach me.
You guys still up for that?
(upbeat music)
- That's a dead rat dude.
- [Josh] What!
- That's nasty.
Yeah, there's a straight
up dead rat under the car.
- [Jamo] There's your dinner dude.
- [Ron] That's gross.
(roaring engine)

[Music]
[Music]
I am local but want the most
call me leo and you're joining today
at home
I drive a 69 chevy nova
passionate
Unfortunately I do not really have time for him
to drive every day because I work
must be yes I was like to run unfortunately
yes not so much in a year i
believe a total of three where I am with mine
muscle car can ride
I had an opel captain but that is
in the one race where I ride
wanted
he was not fit enough and at
the other is just a German
car opel captain and there you see
dear americans could drive because of that
I do not drive them and I do not
have another car at some point
there is no need for a massacre
its v8 must have it i have now
just came you who has 50 ps so
normally it has 35 ps motor
in it and unfortunately it was broken and then
we thought we build the same 50
ps motor and then there is also
a little faster
you can not say it now so fast
like a jet but you can come
ever one or the other little one
race from traffic light to traffic light you can already
So you are no snail but now
you're not the fastest one either
name karmann engine exactly that should
be my everyday car and so for the
little meeting where you can not now
necessarily with this racing machine
must because the racing machine knows with me
not I say 380 ps you can do it
do not say so exactly
It's so pretty that you're pretty often
you have to screw it you have to dare
you drive it and I have to
I honestly admit I'm not a screwdriver
and I could not do the car either
drive if I do not have people behind me
would have screwed for me
Of course, I do not help small things
any screws in
any holes fall with the
fingering out again or for that
I am also responsible for design because I am
her yes I can not really with you
to do something technical
Of course I know what a camshaft
is and they have all the fights now
on it and it makes the car of course
faster I know where they are but
I could not do that now
install or remove the car
I do not like to do that too
that is not that is such a formula
work you have to be a fox and
I have patience I have none
patience for and if anything breaks
is then I hear that at the same time
car if anything runs around then
I say hey look and look
then it will be fixed then I am
I am also very thankful because without mine
mechanic I could not brake
you have to say that here
the guys have great class
and help me musicians
I believe three people like that
at least always fiddling with it
and yes it is, yes there is
to hold different areas
the one is responsible in the
others are better at it and
yes right now where we try more
but get out of the car but the limit
is reached now so not more then
maybe another car for me
race but the car will not now
fumbled around because someday
you also fumble the parts broken
It's also on with this ami engine
a bit anyway a simson if you
once it has fiddled with it
you always fumble around I have too
a simson and me so my horse five
minutes and then you screwed like
I did not say and that is annoying
At some point it is annoying is indeed such a
nice pastime
but when the pension starts and
Five minutes before the fear goes
something broke
the starter or something we had
already there one must look that one completely
fast 9 worried and
mutated and you ask friends and
Everyone calls around and leaves you
fly in as a reason
but friends have one but it is
yes you are already sweating because you
There is no fear there
take part
I am not the sole owner
stefan you already have
I got to know that with
Car quite a lot of people do not know that
It is important to me that I am here
so if you tell them one by one
Reichs would deny that but that is
so he would not have the car without me and
i did not have the car without him he is
the driver of the man behind
me and I are the driver
But they are only friends that I can
I did not see it anymore
now eleven or maybe ten years in
We wanted to own one at that time
have american car
After my first time at
so meet at 36 the wall because wanted
I absolutely need a car and then yes
still for work because I do yes
airbrush and graffiti and such an advertising
vehicle would not be bad but me
I do not have the right one
found and I knew myself there too
not like that and the scene and through
I have a coincidence then in the internet
I'm on a chevy nova then
pushed
and there I have a little bit
researched us at this time so before
Eleven years ago there was not that way
Many of them
of course, the internet is full now
with semino what i do not know since
This one movie I know that again
hot is the foot or so is very the
nova in Germany has exploded
yes and well it's a pity
because I would have liked to be like that
someone who does not like to do that either
shares with other people and I am
a bit jealous if I am
then see
no one else has the same
this is like with the garments the
I'm from England or America
always send certain things
because I'm just scared you're going and
because then she is the same with
another way it is with cars
and then you look at how
many the many oh what are they here
at the meeting the many opas are there
and then of course you are always
a bit and then doctor compares
you could do better with that now
looks better or that looks again
better with me so well so the nova
There is no option to sell
not if there is a lack of money because of a
professional there is sweat and blood in it
in the car that is yes we have that
year elaborately restored
one and a half years i am also diligent
helped and other one and a half years
was a part of this car completely
taken apart every screw was off
and thousands of little bottles in the
drawer and everything was labeled and
you just think you have one
car but it is in boxes and
cartons packed you can not
rausholen you can not now
Driving and then we were
We were not often that year either
concern because you did not have a car and
without a car that was the time you were
other person if you meet such a person
go to it's somehow somebody
you know you have a home but you can
I'm there with the car so the the
nova is designed for running
So a city tour now with the
I rarely do it because you're easy
He is getting hot fast and he wants you
even if you already notice this power
you have the steering wheel in your hand and he
really just want to drive fast and
in the race that's because in the summer
It's usually very hot and hot
then I turn on the heating to easy
still relieve the mother so the
heat is then in the interior
guided and then I drive too
with fans and then of course
I do not know one faster
half a million seconds or if that
I do not mind that
not even but I'm really sweating there
very much the car and you never can
So imagine it's crazy
I have to be careful so that I do not while
The hut drives the cabin crazy because of it
really very hot we drive
for about 12 13 years ago and it occurred
has already changed so you notice
this change of people so it
many are not there anymore but are
many new people because the younger one
generation comes after it is natural
also with such a car that too
own is of course a question of price
if you're a car it's the one thing
to buy one car and the other
thing is it then still in the race
to drive and then because you always with it
must expect that something breaks down
and then it depends on it
how fast are you so you have to
to take off and watch that there as well
comes through and if he does not have something
fits or that has so little ps i
then you can not believe that either
I do not know exactly what to ride
I think they are very attentive
that's a bit of everything
on race is designed and not on
a sunday partner
I'm just starting
I did not know that I was there
before the race decrease must be easy
at the start and then it was already the
there was such a guy there
then made the flag down and then
it started, I still remember that
that was all very exciting and
of course there was not that way either
many rules
that came more and more there was the route
also on the other side and yes
So the end has already been a lot
changed over time but me
would not say anything now
negative
it's different than it used to be
war
one may also wonder where is
where is léo cardia if she is not
there is always something I can be there
can not ride or i have i
No time then I can of course
not ride
but then I think so too
then ask where is she now?
because you just that's such a small one
community and it was mostly always
the same people hardly anyone comes new
but as I said it is also one
Quiz question you have to first synonymous
raise money for a car around there
at which races participate
and you do not want to be what you are
car what you love and from the mouth
you have saved there now synonymous
do not shoot on the track yes
stefan you have not been asked why
I'm always so pretty
make a difference at the meetings but very much
yes on the hand you're so synonymous with it
your camera and you do not want
right now a mop
take pictures or film
Imagine then I would in the car
sit like I get up with one
mop and no lipstick on it
and only with sneakers or
Rubber boots wear amazon and so on
I'm there with the race with ner
at least five or six photographers
and since
and one is always at least
photo of you there you just have to look
that you look good there is
always a few hours before
already planned what I wear and then
In any case, always the help from the
not out but by accident
it arises naturally with the
autograph cards so i'm whole
many little fans so little girls
or so the already standing at the fence
and then an autograph card
want and then had my photographer
pixel gnome the idea you gave her
autograph cards and they are coming too
pretty good
I even get post to home in the
I'm asked if I'm not
could send autograph cards
It's crazy or I can
So that's what I think so I'm like that
Insignificantly you know I am like that
Insignificant I am a normal person
man from the man and me and I know
not even then you ask me
an autograph card just because I was then
45 minutes since the race with the driver
is i feel like this then
little girl comes i find myself
not very big if not now
somehow a man comes or something
says hey you drove well or something
no, if so little girls come that
has a very big meaning for
me because I'm such a little bit
Girl was and we did not even have
none of us had a driver's license
in the family or a car we had
not at all and for me it is whole
great if so a little
Girl comes and me then
Little wonder and then thinks
I also want to be like that later because
As a little girl I was like that
and great girls have admired and
always wanted to be like you and me
hope that the little ones because on
fence where the daddy takes time
with the child and maybe not
have so much money at all
to afford a normal car
I hope that this little girl
maybe in my footsteps
can kick and then 20 30 years on
maybe next time
generation is that
so a small leocadia only goes with it
another name
So that's the change with the
I would not like motorcycles either
sad but i have too
balance disorders I can not
times with the bike both were from so
really that can keep me from
right to left
but with motorcycle really that's great
class as well at sandbag trends there
cheer always the most
only to the car drivers but one man
Do not forget so one
Motorcyclist who is there so the
makes a lot because I'm not there
no words for that is so
Motorcyclists this is cinema is yes the
now go straight ahead but with so
A dirt track in the curves that
is the madness I do not know how to
Motorcyclists are crazy
have a lot of respect from me to the
Motorcyclists the motorists of course
but that is something quite again
other maybe because I like it
because maybe I drove myself
but the difference is already
between motorcycle and car is already
Huge for me this year, that's me
again at the race first at the season
opening on may 11 where i will be back for you
sweat and then of course
the main race at 28 then it is
it will be great
