Why Not to Buy an Extended Car Warranty (Scam)

Why Not to Buy an Extended Car Warranty (Scam)

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, today I'm going to
help you decide if you should buy an extended
warranty when you buy a car or not, now
extended warranties came into my mind a
few days ago, when one of my customers
was buying a brand new car and they said,
the salesman was pushing and
pushing for hours to sell them one of
these extended warranty plans, and since
they're buying a new Toyota I said, well
you didn't waste your money and buy one
did you, they said no, we just went with a
warranty that the car came with, but they
wanted to know why they were pushing the
warranty sales to him, well I did a
little research on the internet and
found out why, the answer was simple, it
turns out that when they're selling you
one of these extended warranty plans, the
Commission to the sales guy is almost
50% of what you're paying for the entire
insurance policy, so they're making the
money selling it to you, and conversely,
that means that half of the money you're
spending goes for a commission, so the
insurance policy is only worth half of
the money you pay for it, that's a great
deal for the salesman, but not such a hot deal
for you, as an example, I had a customer
with a Volvo that bought one of those
extended warranties on a used car, and he
brought it to me and I looked I said,
well the rear main seal the engine is
leaking oil, so I called up the company
and they said, oh well that's not covered
under the warranty, you have to realize
that an extended warranty is just an
insurance plan through an insurance
company, and guess who decides what's
covered and what isn't the company
itself, and when I read through the guys
policy, I told him, I said, the only
person that could really comprehend this
policy would be a lawyer / mechanic,
because there were legal terms, but there
are also mechanical terms, so you're not
going to find too many lawyers /
mechanics to help you out, and to make
matters even worse, I had another
customer who had a Fiat, and they bought
an extended warranty from a third party,
when they brought it over here and I
found out that it needed an alternator, I
called the 1-800 number, only to find
that the company didn't exist anymore,
they'd gone bankrupt, I find if you're
buying a quality car like a Toyota, or Honda,
and something that's really going to last,
you're better off looking at the money
that it costs for the extended warranty,
just put that in the bank, and use that
for repairs, and you'll probably be
thinking Scotty years down the line, when you
don't spend any of that money on the
repairs that would have been covered, and
you still have the money that you would
have wasted on this policy, but there are
times that I do advise my customers to
buy a warranty policy, and that is when
they buy the wrong type of car, if they
buy a Mercedes, or a Jaguar,
by all means buy a policy, but buy it
from the dealer where it's going to be
stood by, because I've had many customers
with Jaguars, Mercedes, Porsches, they
ended up getting five or six times the
amount of work done that they paid for
the policy on those cars, because they
break down as they age, but then again if
you're wise, don't even buy those cars in
the first place, so now you know a bit
more about extended warranty policies
why it's probably not a good idea for
you to waste money on them, but why the
salesmen love try to sell them to you, more

2007-2013 Silverado Barricade Extreme HD Front Bumper w/ LED Fog Lights Review & Install

2007-2013 Silverado Barricade Extreme HD Front Bumper w/ LED Fog Lights Review & Install

AmericanTrucks Chevy & GMC:

The Barricade Extreme HD Front Bumper with
LED Fog Lights is available for any 2007 to
2013 Silverado owner who's looking for some
front end protection, great for off-roading,
while also getting some additional lighting
for their front end for improved visibility,
especially at night.
This is not only protective but it's pretty
stylish as well, for an aggressive appearance,
and it's offered at more of a budget-friendly
price than other options in the category.
The installation doesn't require any drilling
or cutting, so expect a pretty solid one-out-of-three
wrenches on our difficulty meter, with the
helping hand of a friend, of course, which
I'll talk more about later on.
If you're going off-roading a lot and tackling
some pretty tough hazards, or if you're on
the work site that poses a threat to your
truck, then you might want some exterior armor.
Barricade has this heavy duty steel bumper
that replaces your factory one to withstand
the hazards that the OEM bumper couldn't.
The 3-millimeter thick steel plating is strong
enough to take the beating for your truck,
and the black powder coating gives it a corrosion
resistant layer, while also giving it a pretty
stealthier look as well.
I typically have a hard time shopping for
protective bumpers like this for my Silverado
because I don't wanna go too overboard and
add hundreds of pounds to the already 4,800-pound
truck.
While this one is pretty heavy for one person,
it's not going to pull down your front end
affecting your miles per gallon too much,
if at all.
It's bulky so it can protect your truck from
bigger obstacles, but it's not too big to
be overwhelming looking which is, I think,
a big plus.
Another plus is that it retains your factory
tow hooks here in the middle with laser-cut
open slots, which some of the more expensive
options tend to lose.
One of the cool things about Barricade's is
that not only does it have the laser cut-outs
for your accent lighting, but it even includes
the accent lights.
There are two 3-inch waterproof square LED
fog lights on the table here which can be
mounted in each corner of your bumper, and
the harnesses even come with it to hook them
up.
These are 5-watt spot LEDs made by an American
manufacturer called Cree, with an intense
6,000K rating, making them a pure white light.
Each light is also rated IP67, which is a
waterproof rating, that allows them to withstand
being submerged in water up to 3.3 feet deep
for up to 30 minutes each, which is about
the same as an iPhone 7 which I think is pretty
impressive.
This is all thanks to the aluminum housing
sealed with a polycarbonate lens on each light.
Everything I just mentioned, the lights and
the bumper itself, is backed with Barricade's
limited three-year warranty included in the
kit to give you some peace of mind.
Typically, if you know anything about Barricade,
they make pretty affordable products.
This one is no different.
Although it's not the cheapest option, it's
also not gonna cost you an arm and a leg.
This one comes in at right around $680, which
is very similar to another DV8 option.
Each bumper replacement on the site currently
offers some kind of included accent lighting
so that's really not gonna differentiate anything.
But what does differentiate stuff is the other
additional features.
This one offers more airflow cut-outs, which
is great for anyone with forced induction
applications, and has an intercooler mounted
up front, or for anyone looking to mount a
light bar in the bumper too.
Other options like that DV8 one I just mentioned
has a bar that comes up to protect a grille,
while others offer relocated tow hook locations
into the grille itself.
It all depends on your personal preference
and what you're looking to get.
If you're looking for a complete front end
protection, check out the Steelcraft replacement
that protects literally everything.
But if you're not going off-roading more often
than not, then you probably won't need all
that and you can settle for something simpler
like this which, in my opinion, it's the simpler,
the better.
The installation is fairly straightforward,
the only part that will be decided upon by
you is the wiring for the lights.
The bumper itself will take about an hour
from start to finish with a helping hand since
it is pretty heavy for one person to tackle.
You definitely wanna have wrenches and socket
sets on deck to tackle this one, so I'm giving
it one-out-of-three wrenches on our difficulty
meter because it is pretty straightforward
at the end of the day.
The first thing you wanna do is remove the
factory license plate and bracket.
Then, if you've got fog lights from the factory,
you should unplug and remove the harness away
from the bumper.
From here, you can remove the four large factory
hex nuts, two on each side, attaching the
bumper to the frame.
I'd suggest having a helping hand on deck
so it doesn't fall off while you're working
the wrench.
Remove the double-bolt plates from the brackets
on each side and then slide the bumper off
the frame and remove the tow hooks.
At this point, if you don't have factory tow
hooks, you can skip this part.
If you do have factory tow hooks, then you'll
need to install the tow hook extension brackets
with the proper hardware, then reinstall the
tow hooks onto those.
Next up, you'll install the frame mounting
bracket with the hex bolts and flat washers
to the slots in the side of the bracket and
into the frame, and repeat for the opposite
side.
With help from a friend, you can now mount
the Barricade bumper to the frame and brackets,
and line up the three holes in the driver
side mounting plate on the back of the bumper
with the three slots in the frame bracket
and bolt it down to each side.
Torque everything down once you've lined it
up and adjusted the bumper into place, making
sure everything is secured.
There is a spot at the front of the bumper
for a license plate if you need that to be
installed on the front.
You can install that to finish it off.
The fog light installation is pretty straightforward,
they easily mount right into the pre-cut slots
with the honeycomb backing here next to the
two, kinda, shark striping on the side.
Once that's installed there, the wiring will
more so be up to you.
You can splice them into the factory fog light
harness if you've got them.
But if not, they can go right into your headlights
or to its own switch if you want them to have
complete control.
It's obviously completely up to you.
That just about does it here for me.
So, if you're the owner of a 2007 to 2013
Silverado, you might wanna check out the Barricade
Extreme HD Front Bumper replacement with LED
accent lighting.
You can find it right here at americantrucks.com.

Top 5 Considerations - Extended Car Warranties - CARFAX

Top 5 Considerations - Extended Car Warranties - CARFAX

CARFAX:

So you’re buying a used car.
And, to protect yourself from future repairs,
you’re thinking about an extended car warranty.
Here are the top 5 things to think about first.
Number one: How long will you keep the car?
If it’s only a short time, say two years
or less, chances are you probably won’t
need the protection of an extended warranty
to cover a major repair.
But if it’s longer than that, follow the
second tip.
Number two: What’s the historical reliability
of the brand?
There is plenty of data to be found – check
out reliability ratings.
Some brands tend to be better built for the
long haul.
Number three: What are you really buying?
Bumper to Bumper coverage?
Targeted Protection like power trains or electrical?
No matter the type of warranty you choose
be sure to read the fine print to discover
what the policy actually covers.
And be sure to watch for third party scams.
Number four: What does an extended car warranty
cost?
Shocking, but true, there are folks out there
that just want to take your money.
But don’t buy under pressure; remember to
shop around, and be sure to negotiate for
the best price.
Number five: Save or Spend?
Consider setting the money aside to cover
potential future repairs that you would otherwise
pay for with a warranty.
That’s right, if you’re a disciplined
saver, and can sock away money every month
to cover the worst repairs.
There’s a lot to consider when contemplating
the purchase of an extended warranty.
Put a little work into it and you will make
the right choice for you
and your vehicle.

2007-2018 Silverado 1500 Barricade Extreme HD Rear Bumper Review & Install

2007-2018 Silverado 1500 Barricade Extreme HD Rear Bumper Review & Install

AmericanTrucks Chevy & GMC:

Well guys, if you are looking for the most
affordable armor steel bumper for your '14
to '18 Silverado, you found it.
Easily put, this will be the least expensive
option on the site, however it's nice to say
that this does come with a lot of features
that the more expensive options come with.
For one this is all welded one-piece steel
construction which is nice.
It's nice and thick as you can hear and it
also has a nice black texture powder coat
finish.
It's not a painted finish.
This is nice because this will really hold
up on the trails.
Now the other thing I like about this bumper
is install.
It's very simple.
Gets one out of three wrenches on my patented
difficulty meter, should only take you about
30 minutes to an hour.
I strongly recommend you have a friend to
help you though because again this thing is
armor, it is very heavy and as you can see
it attaches with the two brackets that I have
on the table with me.
Without further ado we've got our nice Z71
package Silverado behind me, let's go ahead
and get started.
All right so this install again is very easy
to do.
You can actually do it in your driveway even
with just basic hand tools and a creeper.
However we wanna get some good angles and
show you all the little nitty-gritty details,
so we're gonna throw our truck up on the lift
so we can get underneath and show you what's
going on under there.
All right we've got our truck up on the lift
but before we start removing our bumper, we
have to tackle some wiring.
I'm referring to the trailer hitch wiring
harness, as well as the license plate light
bulbs.
Let's go ahead underneath and I'll show you
how to get all those disconnected.
Your license plate bulbs are located on either
side inside the bumper here.
You don't need any tools to remove these,
you're just going to turn them counterclockwise
and disconnect them with your hands.
Both of our license plate bulbs are removed,
now we're going to remove our trailer hitch
wiring harness.
I'm gonna take a flathead screwdriver and
pop these out like so.
Now that we have all of our wiring taken care
of, our bumper is disconnected from the vehicle
electronically.
Now we can start pulling some bolts, the first
bolts that we're going to pull are two 21-millimeter
head bolts and they're located on the bracket
that comes off of the trailer hitch tubing
and mounts to the frame.
You need an extension for this one as well.
Before we pull the rest of the hardware, securing
our bumper to the frame, there is one little
bolt and nut hidden behind your trailer hitch
receiver and that's a 13-millimeter socket.
It's really tough to show you guys but if
you put your hand behind the license plate
hole, kind of feel around, it's gonna be generally
at the bottom of the receiver hitch.
It's a really tight space, so you could try
and use maybe a quarter inch drive ratchet,
but I'm just gonna go ahead and use a ratcheting
wrench.
All right so like I said, it's very hard to
show you guys but this is what that little
bolt looks like.
And again there's a nut retaining it inside
of here.
You don't need to hold that nut on the other
end because it is clipped.
Again just need a 13-millimeter ratchet wrench
to pull this out.
There is one more 13-millimeter bolt behind
the spare tire lock right here.
It's that same bracket that we pulled on the
driver side, there's another one on the passenger
side.
So again go ahead and use that 13-millimeter
ratchet to remove that as well.
Now that that little bracket is out of the
way, we can go ahead and disconnect the bumper
from the truck.
To do that there's going to be two 18-millimeter
nuts on either side and a 14-millimeter bolt
that we have to remove, gonna show you guys
where those are located.
All right, so we're gonna start with our two
18-millimeter nuts right here.
And this bolt up here is actually a 15-millimeter.
So the bolts and nuts we just pulled from
the driver side, we're gonna do to our passenger
side.
These are the last three pieces of hardware
holding the bumper to the vehicle, so when
you remove these, make sure you have a friend
with you to support the bumper in case it
comes falling off.
Now that we've removed all the hardware securing
the bumper to the vehicle, normally you'd
be able to pull the bumper from the vehicle.
Unfortunately some of the newer model Silverados,
specifically '14 and newer, require that you
actually loosen the bolts securing the bed
to the frame.
That's gonna allow enough clearance for the
bracket holding the bumper to be pulled out
from the vehicle.
Those are 18-millimeter bolt heads.
Once you've loosened those four bolts, you
can go ahead and put the vehicle down.
You can have a friend help you by pulling
up on the bed a little bit, that should give
you just enough clearance so your brackets
on your bumper clear.
You can pull the bumper from the vehicle.
Now that our bumper is free from the vehicle,
we can start installing the brackets for our
new Barricade bumper.
But before we do that, since we did have to
loosen those bolts securing the bed, we're
gonna go ahead and tighten those back up.
Our bed's tightened back down.
We're gonna go ahead and install the brackets
for our new Barricade bumper.
They are marked for driver side and passenger
side.
You're gonna go ahead and grab two of the
largest bolts and flat washers that the kit
comes with as well as two of the largest locking
nylon nuts and you're gonna slide it into
where the original bumper bracket came off.
With those large 21-millimeter bolts and nuts
securing the bracket to the vehicle, you have
one more hole at the top and rear back here.
You're gonna use the longest bolts provided
in the kit, these are 17-millimeter head bolts.
You're gonna grab the appropriate flat washers
and the 17-millimeter nuts and tighten those
down as well.
Now our driver side is hand-tightened, we're
gonna do the same exact thing to the passenger
side with those bolts, washers, and nuts.
And then we're gonna drive everything home
with our power tools.
All right, so like I said, we're gonna go
ahead and tighten these down.
It is a little bit difficult getting some
power tools in here, so I'm gonna keep it
simple, just use some hand tools.
You need a 21-millimeter socket for that bolt
and you're gonna need a 22-millimeter wrench
for the nut on the other side.
Those two large bolts and nuts are tightened
down on either end.
Again those were 21-millimeter sockets, 22-millimeter
wrenches.
I'm gonna go ahead and tighten down that one
long thinner bolt that we applied earlier,
with that smaller nut, and again you're going
to need a 17-millimeter socket and you're
gonna need a 17-millimeter wrench.
Our brackets are tightened down and we can
finally start installing the bumper to the
brackets.
To make it easy on ourselves because this
bumper is quite heavy, we're gonna lower our
truck, get it all the way on the ground, and
our friend's gonna help us line up those brackets
so we can tighten everything down with the
provided hardware.
We're now ready to finally bolt our new bumper
up to the vehicle.
I'm gonna have a friend support the bumper
while it's resting on the trailer hitch.
I'm going to go ahead and crawl underneath
and I'm gonna use all of the provided hardware
to tighten everything down.
We're gonna go ahead and tighten everything
down now.
You're gonna need a 19-millimeter wrench for
the nuts we just applied.
And you're going to need an 18-millimeter
swivel for the bolts themselves.
Now our bumper is now installed, nice and
tight.
We're gonna go ahead and plug in our parking
sensor plugs because our truck does not come
equipped with parking sensors.
We're also gonna go ahead and plug in our
license plate light and we're going to wire
it into our existing wiring harness.
So like I said, everything's plugged in now.
We're gonna go ahead and put our truck back
up on the lift, so I can wire up that new
license plate light.
All right guys, so with our license plate
bulb hooked up and our spare tire back in
place, that actually wraps up my review and
install of the Barricade Extreme HD Rear Bumper,
fitting your '07 through '18 Silverado.
I'm Travis, thanks for watching.
