The Truth About the New Chevy Cruze, Buyer Beware

The Truth About the New Chevy Cruze, Buyer Beware

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, Kenneth case of
Scotty
I really like my 2017 chevy cruze
premiere RS I never had a problem
throughout my ownership should I keep it
thanks, well it's a 2017 it's only a year
and a half old, you better not have any
problems, you might as well keep it cuz
I'll tell you the truth if you try
selling that thing now, you'll see how
much money you will lose, what you owe on
it versus what it's worth it would be
foolish to sell it now maybe you got a
good one that's gonna last, I never advise
anybody to buy it and I got a customer with
one he's got a picture of Mickey Mouse
in his back window cuz she's sued them
under the lemon lawn for some weird
reason they gave him back three thousand
dollars and that was it, they wouldn't
take the car back so, you know but if it lasts
drive it around cuz you would lose your
shirt if you sold it now, CK says Scotty
I'm looking into buying a 2004 GMC
Canyon with two hundred sixteen thousand
miles from a mechanic should I buy it
okay
well it depends if it was the mechanic's
vehicle and he took care of it, not a
bad idea but if he's selling it for somebody
else
you kind of think now the canyon was
kind of a bizarre truck they weren't
that bad
I mean look that thing's got a lot of
miles it's still running, I just uh
wouldn't pay too much for it, it's a 15
year old GMC pickup truck with two
hundred sixteen thousand miles if you're
looking for a Knockaround truck to haul
a little bit of stuff around why not but
just don't pay too much, it's an old GMC
truck with a lot of miles on it,
Albee says what's your opinion on police
cars mainly 2013 police patrol vehicle
Taurus with the 3.7 Mustang engine with
100,000 miles on it, well that was a fun
vehicle in its time but the thing is if
it was a police vehicle, generally they
drive them like maniacs and they get
the heck burnt out of them, I mean you generally
expect you're gonna put an engine or a
transmission in them in a short period of
time, but if you are thinking about
buying one use, do not touch it until you
get a guy like me a professional
mechanic and gonna check it out with his
computer and road test it and tell you
what kind of shape it's in. you want to
start there if you do want to buy a
vehicle like that, they can be fun to drive
around but of course don't pay much for
it, a used police vehicle the resale
value is not that much, you don't want to
pay much because
you know you're playing with dynamite
you don't know what's left with that
vehicle, why do you think the police get
rid of them every so many years,
Alvaro Tejado says Scotty I got
a 95 volvo 940 when i start it up in the
morning it makes the metallic rattling
sound when I rev it, it goes away for 3-4
minutes, the engine was rebuilt seven
years ago you know what's really typical
with those things, is the catalytic
converters rattle as they age for some
reason they made them crappy inside your
catalytic converter are these honeycomb
pieces that have platinum in them and
that burns hydrocarbons and as they age
especially on those vehicles it cracks
and they will rattle, but then when they
heat up the metal expands and they
stop rattling check that first now, if it
runs okay it doesn't hurt anything and a
new cat for that vehicle cost an awful
lot of money, you might live with it if
it is the cat rattling and it runs okay
when it doesn't run good, the
temperature gauge run hotter and you'll
only be able to go like 55 miles an hour
not any faste,r then you know it's
clogged up and you'd have to replace it
then, US storm says Scotty I have an 07
Honda Civic LX coupe with rear drum
brakes should I upgrade them to disc
brakes, okay here's the thing the rear
brakes on that car are one thing mainly
most of the power is stopped in the
front disc, the rear drums are there
so the car doesn't fishtail when you
stop hard and when you corner and stop for
normal driving those work perfectly fine
and you're not gonna have any problems
with them, it's kind of a waste of money
putting it in a little car like that it
really doesn't need it it's a light car
and disc brakes for all four wheels are
more for racing because they don't fade
when you stop go fast stop go fast stop
go fast, drums will actually stop a car
just as fast one time but in a race they
aren't that's why they were first used
in race cars because they're slamming them on
and hit the gas, slamming them on and
hitting the gas and the drum brakes will
overheat where the discs wouldn't and
that's why they started using them but
on yours are you really wouldn't want to
spend money for that, my Honcho says Scotty
should I put fuel injection on a Dodge
Dart 318 v8 well it's a good question
but depends on what do you want to do
with the thing, if you're planning on
selling it in the future, no because if
it's stock that's a classic 73 Dodge dart
you're gonna lower the value by taking
the factory stuff off,
but if you want it to drive faster
and get better gas mileage, put it on but
save all your old parts, save the
manifold, save the carburetor because
then if you sell it at some point in the
future
you can say to the guy, look I did this
because I like fuel injection you want
to go back to stock here's all the parts
in the box keep them all, don't throw
any of them away, always do that with the
classic car never throw any old parts
away and if you want to modify it to your
heart's content you're gonna keep it for
years go right ahead
just keep the old parts, so if you never
want to miss another one of my new car
repair videos, remember to ring that Bell!

Here's Why Chevys are Crap

Here's Why Chevys are Crap

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, Christian Pete says
I got a 06 Chevy HHR heard some GM vehicles
won't work right with aftermarket radios
yeah you know it's true it's insane for
some reason a lot of the vehicles GM
made it that the radio is part of the
anti-theft system part of the starting
system of the car and I have had people
but aftermarket radios and the car once
thought they told it to me and I
explained to them you know it's got the
stupid interface for the starting system
I've also seen ones that they didn't
even touch of it's a factory radio but
something broke inside it in the car
wouldn't start
I don't know what this GM engineers have
in their minds or snuck up their rear
ends but they're certainly not doing it
right when they design stuff like that
that's just plain stupidity and they've
done it, v6 rice burner says Scotty I heard
that if the ground straps to your engine is
broken your wheel bearings can burn up
you know that sounds crazy but it's true
you gotta have a good strap from your
negative terminal your battery to both
the body of the car and the engine you
don't then ground its gonna seat you all
kinds of sources and since the tires are
on the ground it can even go through the
wheel bearings make them run hotter make
them burn out, so what
you want to do is everyone so how did
you check your ground straps it's very simple
they'll corrode it the battery clean
them or if they get loose tighten them
up and then the other end they just bolt
on you can unbolt them see if they're
rusted or corroded make them all shinny again
and then put them back on again it's an
easy thing to do and it's often to
collect it on older cars people don't
even think about it, James Royal the
first and he says I recently replaced the
catalytic converter on my Chrysler and my
mechanic
tells me the catalytic converter is
tripping a code that it's bad what could be
wrong all right well the first thing is
it's a Chrysler
unfortunately what people need to
understand about catalytic converters is
they burn unburned hydrocarbons so you don't
pollute if
a catalytic converter goes bad unless
you hear it rattling and it's physically
broken into pieces of rattling around
inside there's something that made it go
bad the engine is burning oil the engine is
running rich the engines running lean
fuel injectors are dripping too much
fuel and that runs the catalytic
converter or somebody was dumb enough to
spray silicone spray cleaner or using
something like seafoam and pouring it
right in the gas tank and then it can
mess with the catalytic converters they
go bad cuz there's a reason it hides out
with yours you got a serious problem
master mechanic who said you need a
catalytic converter again why is this
going on they don't generally go bad on
their own unless I say they break and you
hear them rattling, there's a reason they
go bad
and if you just replace the cat you'll just
keep replacing and replacing, williams GMC
say if
antifreeze gets into my engine and i
catch it in time do i have to replace
all angeles if you catch up in time and
it did damage you thing you won't have
to but here's what you have to worry
about your combustion chambers the
piston goes up it's compressing air and
fuel spray so that compress is pretty
good if you got a whole bunch of coolant
that leaked inside there when it goes up
and it's tell us to go further if it's
pushing against coolant the valves are closed
it still can push because the engines
got to spin it will bend the piston rods
goodbye it'll run bad, so if you
find that it still runs good now and you
change the oil and filter you're not
getting any foamy or a water mix yeah
you could continue in a job you want to
pray that not too much got inside there,
I'm at 9903 says my 07 hybrid
camry with 187 thousand miles is not
getting as good gas mileage as it used
to okay it's a hybrid often that's the
big giant battery the really expensive
one as they get older they lose
percentage of the power and as they do
your gas mileage will go down I see that
all the time in the hybrids now it is a
hybrid it's not a full electric car so
you want to check the spark plugs on
your regular engine that's a gasoline
four-stroke engine they are filled
there's stuff like that but if they're
all ok and it runs perfectly fine odds
are your hybrid battery starting to wear
out and then when you find the price of
that hybrid battery you might just live
with a little bit worse gas mileage
Wilhemina j says, Ford f-150 I was
going down the road and the speedometer
just stopped working and all kinds of
lights came on all right you want to
pray that it's just the speed sensor
there's an electronic speed sensor on a transmission
measures how it spins around sends an
impulse to the dash and makes the
speedometer work now even though your
speedometer looks like the old-fashioned
kind they have a speedometer cable it
doesn't work that way the signal on a
transmission is digital and it goes to
the dash and the dash changes the digital
one
to a stepper motor and a motor turns it
so it's actually turning but it's not
directly with the cable you want to pray
it's just that because if it isn't it
could be something's broken in the
transmission and then you won't get a
signal from the sensor praise the sensor
simple you can unbolt it by one and put
on yourself too, very easy fix, Easy Rider
says Scotty why does the low oil light comes
on
in a 2007 Express but it's full on the
dipstick, knowing those things just change
the
oil pressure sending unit they don't
cost much both off full time that could
fix all your problems if that isn't the problem
then you basically want to go to a
mechanic like me we put our actual oil
pressure gauge on that's a physical and
it gives the actual pressure and if you
do have low oil pressure that can get
super expensive it can be a bad oil
pump it could be bad bearings worn in
the engine they'd have a bigger space so
oil takes up a bigger space that makes
the pressure go down you want to pray
it's just the oil pressure sending unit from
my experience on those it often is,
so if you never want to miss another one
of my new car repair videos, remember to
ring that Bell

Why GM Doesn't Make Good Cars Anymore, What Went Wrong

Why GM Doesn't Make Good Cars Anymore, What Went Wrong

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, zack says
Scotty my old family are GM fans, do you
know when GM car started to make them
poorly, my guess would be when they went
bankrupt around 2009, well they started
to make them poorly long before that, even
in the early 2000s they started to make
a lot cheaper stuff, I don't know how
true it is, but I talked to an engineer
and an engineer told me one time that GM
and Ford were going neck to neck and
people thought, Oh GM's are made better
than the Fords and then they did a
little research and GM found out that
they were spending 20% more building
their vehicles and that's why they were
better vehicles back decades ago, well
according to the engineer that I was
talking to, GM looked at and said gee
were spending 20% money more than Ford
building our cars, let's make them
cheaper, so they did and then the quality
went down, I know if it's true or not but
an engineer told me that, but they
have been going but down since the
early 2000s, it's just the nature of the
beast with corporations these days, they
want to make a profit and they want to
make things as cheap as they can and pay
people that make them as little as
possible, so they make more profit for
the corporation that's the way that
things go and sometimes it takes the
wrong turn like GM did and make products
that you don't hold up like they used to,
I learned to drive on a Chevrolet
Biscayne the thing was like a tank it had
a
302 v8 in it and that thing just ran
forever but not the new ones their not made
that wa,y no Oberto says Scotty
I am seriously considering buying the
2019 Land Cruisers, do you consider it to
be
the best quality built SUV I'm aware of
the gas mileage, yes they are for that
kind of a vehicle if you're willing to
spend that kind of money and get that
kind of low gas mileage, they are well build
vehicles my customers with them are all
pretty well happy with them, other than
the horrible gas mileage and if you're
willing to spend that kind of money, they
can last a long time, I got customers
with those thing that have three hundred and
fifty thousand miles on them and they're
still running strong, yeah if you don't
mind spending that kind of money go
right ahead, me I'm too cheap I'd never
spend that kind of money, Rambo ask
Scotty what do you think about me buying
a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
all wheel drive with 140,000 miles straight
6 for six grand
from my uncle as a first car,
well first of all some uncle he should
give you the car, now I'm not a Jeep fan
by any stretch of the imagination but
back in 2004 they were building much
better ones than they are today now that
Fiat owns them, that straight six-cylinder
engine can last forever I've seen those
things go 400,000 miles, good engines the
transmission that's an OK transmission
it's not great but it's not totally
horrible, it's a 15 year old Jeep try to
get it for a little bit less than $6,000
see if you can barter it, they can be fun
vehicles to drive around, realize they're
somewhat gas hogs because jeeps are
trucks their high up in the air, their not
aerodynamic or anything but it can be a
fun thing to drive, just try to get it a
little bit of lower, Scotty my SUV keeps
going out of alignment I had new shocks
replaced and no one seems to get the
alignment right, any ideas what as to what
it can be,
here's the thing, front end alignment
work we're talking about thousands of an
inches here thousands of an inches there
it's gotta be a pro who knows what he's
doing, so your best to find a
front-end shop that's all they do, here
in Houston I use cotton brothers front
end, they know what they're doing they
can fix any alignment problem, now the
second thing is, modern vehicles
especially the SUVs they're not like
vehicles when I was young, when I was
young they had all kinds of adjustments
there were like six different
adjustments you could do, today a lot of
times the only adjustment you can do is
the caster and the camber that's it
you can't do anything else, so it might
be that the alignment is off because the
struts bent or an a frame is bent, that's
why you have to start with a really good
front end guy, who knows what he's doing
and does good work you have to start
there, because otherwise all bets are off,
Devon says Scotty and I got a 93
3 liter 4runner, it does 16-17 mile per gallon
on the highway but does five to six in the
city any reason why, I live in Fresno
with hardly any traffic on the streets
Thanks, okay first of all, when you're
driving it in town does it get into top
gear, if you drive it really slow and the
transmission doesn't shift into top
gear, you're gonna get crappy gas mileage
like that, 16 to 17 is what those things
get on a highway, so it's working
normally at highway speed, so I'm
assuming it's not shifting into the top
gear when you're driving in town, go 35
miles an hour count the shifts as it shifts
and it should be into the top gear
if it isn't, you got a problem with your
transmission not shifting into gear
that's about the only thing that would
make sense cuz if you have any other
problem with the vehicle, it's gonna get
horrible gas mileage on the highway too,
the only difference is, it's shifting
into the higher gear on the highway maybe
it's not doing it in town, you should
still get at least 12 or something in
the city not 5 or 6, so if you never want
to miss another one of my new car repair
videos, remember to ring that Bell!

Never Buy a Car With This Engine

Never Buy a Car With This Engine

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, today I'm going to
talk about five of the worst car engine
designs ever made, now as time goes on
things have gotten more complicated they
started simple, in my grandfather's day
he was a mechanic who was born in the
late 1800s, the Model T Ford was king, it
was a pretty simple vehicle with a
pretty simple engine, and yeah since the
metallurgy wasn't as good back then, Hey
the engines need to be overhauled quite
a bit, but it was inexpensive many guys
were able to do it, but modern cars we're
talking about uber complex machines, if
you want to overhaul a modern engine in
the car, you can easily spend anywhere
from four to ten thousand dollars, so
it's something you want to avoid at all
costs a bad engine, the Chevy 2.2 liter
Ecotec four-cylinder engine, now this
engine was designed with the Germans
from Opel helping GM, a relatively
complex designed that put on a lot of
horsepower for small engine, so it was an
extremely tightly designed engine, but
that led to its downfall that and the
fact that Americans often did not take
care of their cars all that well, because
they had massive problems with timing
chain failure on those things, I had a
bunch of my customers with them they
either towed them in because they didn't
run anymore, or they came in clanging
like mad, I'd have to say gee I'm sorry
you know the engine has gone kaput, because
the timing chain assemblies all knocking
holes and things, and they just weren't
worth the money to repair at the age of
the vehicle, and they just ended up
junking them, the biggest design flaw
from what I can understand is that the
timing chain tensioner pulley didn't
have enough oil in at idle, so an idle it
didn't get enough oil pressure
everything started to come apart after
that, if you have overhead cam engines
and you don't get enough oil feeding
them, hey they're gonna self-destruct
that's why the older engines actually
lasted longer cuz they were pushrod
engines and the cam was in the middle of
the engine where there's more oil than
at the very top where if there's an oil
supply problem the tops gonna run dry
and the cams are gonna go, and on this
overhead cam design what's called the
interference engine,
something goes wrong with a cam timing
boom the valves hit the pistons goodbye
engine basically, so specially if you're
the type of person that doesn't maintain
a car well, change the oil all the time
using quality oil and quality filters, stay
away from an Ecotec engine because it's
just flirting with disaster if you don't
take care of those really well, now
the next bad engine design is the Audi 1.8
turbocharged four-cylinder engine, now
here again a lot of the problems with this
Audi turbo 4 are maintenance related
because there's a big argument now but a
lot of people are saying, audi and
Volkswagen, they use these in Volkswagens
too same company really Volkswagen owns
them, they didn't tell them that hey they
have to use synthetic oil, so a lot of
people use normal oil but they went to
the synthetic oil change interval, they
were changing them like every ten
thousand miles and sludge built up
inside the engine, these engines were
produced from 1997 to 2004 and were in
a ton of Volkswagen and Audi products, it
gave them a really bad name especially
since they were turbocharged,
turbochargers after all they do is they
ram more air in, so that's the same as
increasing the compression pressure
inside the engine cylinders, the more
pressure the more sludge and build-up
faster the engines are gonna go out, I've
seen tons of either be on their last legs
burning oil like mad knocking, or they
just give up the ghost and they lock up
and they don't run anymore,
now these 1.8 turbo engines also had
frequent coil pack failure, and so they'd
run crappy a lot, now that's not that big
of a deal to a mechanic like me, I just
get out my scan and I can see the
coil packs aren't firing and I'd replace them,
and since I know those were bad if
customer had problems I just buy all
four aftermarket and put them on, and in
this case the aftermarket ones were
actually built better than the ones that
Volkswagen Audi put on them in the first
place
now the next bad engine as the Chrysler
2.7 liter v6 engine
what a clunker, they so many bad designs
it's hard to cover them in a short video like
this, but one of their big ones was the
stupid water pump was driven by a timing
chain, and you had to take the whole
engine apart and
the crossover pipe of the exhaust system
in order to change that stupid water
pump, and it wasn't something you could
kind of leave alone because since the
water pump was driven by the timing
chain, guess what if that water pump
actually snapped off and the bearing went,
there goes the timing chain, Pistons hit
the valves there goes the engine, what a
stupid idea
and the old cars hey they I had the
fan belt running the water pump on the
outside of the engine, sometimes you
could change them in 15-20 minutes, even
the hard ones might have taken an hour
or two, but if they broke it didn't
destroy the engine, just overheat you see
the temperature gauge go up and you turn the
car off, and they broken on these chrysler
engines
boom there goes the engine it's too
late then, even a crankcase ventilation
system was designed wrong on this, and a lot
of them they let the sludge get into the
engine, then of course that would clog up
the engine and they'd lose oil pressure and
the engines would blow, I saw that tons
of times and interesting enough the
history of this engine was, one of their
guys Francois, he decided that Chrysler
needed a lightweight efficient modern
aluminum v6 engine and give Chrysler a
reputation of quality and modern
designing, boy did they mess up on that
it gave them a reputation that went down the
toilet,
now the cadillac v8-6-4 that could turn
the cylinders on and off, activate it or not
activate it, was that a clunker, now sure
the electronics back in 1981 when they were
making these things was really lacking for
activating and deactivating the
cylinders, they do have a modern version
somewhat better than the older one but
still I've got costumes with them and
they haven't been happy with them, a lot
of them pay a mechanic to disconnect
that system and just go back to a normal
v8 engine, and in the case of this
cylinder deactivation engine from 1981
hey it was a throttle body fuel
injection it was basic fuel injection,
bad electronics and a basic fuel
injection system, those things were
horrible it would mess with their
acceleration, making it shut off when it
shouldn't, or not shutting it off when it
should, customers of mine that have had those
things, they just ended up hating those cars
and
since that fuel injection system was so
basic, they had some serious problems of
first when they shut off, they would not
have enough fuel and they would run too
lean and then when they turn on, they
would run too rich, so you get
herky-jerky motion, I mean you don't buy
a v8 engine vehicle to get herky-jerky
motion, it was just a really stupid idea
that GM actually produced, now the last
bad engine design I'm talking about
today, is the mazda 1.3 liter rotary
engine, basically it was an interesting
design that failed, I remember when I was
young mechanic Mazda came out with this
cosmos, and they had a little bitty
rotary engine that they said, yeah puts
on a lot of power and it can run on any
kind of fuel, but there was real drawback,
well more than one, but the main one was
yeah it was a tiny little engine and
yeah that little 1.3 liter engine put out
a lot of
horsepower, but it got horrendous gas
mileage, I knew guys with these cosmos
and they were getting like four or five
miles a gallon in this tiny little car
and the real kicker was the seals on
those engines, their rotary engines and they
have like a triangular rotor and each
corner there's an apex seal and those
seals all wore out, and one of the
biggest things that happened to them was
absolutely hilarious, because the seals
didn't work right and gasoline a lot of
it got by the seals,
so almost every single one of them
when you turn it off you'd wait a few
seconds and you're here bang, the
unburned gasoline would get into the
exhaust system and then it would explode
and most of them turned into tremendous
oil burners too, one of the reasons was
it's actually a design of the vehicle,
they found out that those apex seals
would wear out, so they actually had an
oil injection system almost like a
two-stroke motor, where they would spray
oil on the engine when you accelerate it
so it would lubricate the seals, well then
you're burning oil of course this made
them very
very hard to get to pass US
emissions and as they aged they
wouldn't pass the emissions anymore
because all that burning oil it ruined
the catalytic converters, they kept
trying to fix it by changing designs, but
even in the end the rx8 and they had
engine failure all the time too, often
around eighty thousand miles the engines
will just give up the ghost, and the
older rotary engines mazda had, they
used to flood out all the time, I had people
tow them here all the time and the engine
was flooded out and I'd have to take the
spark plugs out, dry them and big
hullabaloo to get them running again, and
then later they'd flood out again it was
just basically a bad designed to put in
a car, these Wankel rotary engines have a
great power-to-weight ratio, and you want
to put them in a light aircraft and
rebuild the engine all the time, hey they
can be great for that, but for a car
you're gonna drive every day down the
road, it's a stupid idea and hopefully no
one will ever come back with it again, so
now you know five bad engine designs to
stay away from and hey who knows what the
future will bring, maybe they'll make
some more like variable compression
engines, or gasoline engines that are
self igniting that don't use spark plugs,
they're working on those, but boy they've
already got teething problems on the
gasoline ones already from what I've
read, so if you never want to miss
another one of my new car repair videos
remember to ring that Bell!

Pawlik Automotive - How reliable are GM brand cars?

Pawlik Automotive - How reliable are GM brand cars?

pawlikautorepair:

Mark: Hi, it’s Mark from Top Local; we’re
here with Bernie Pawlik of Pawlik Automotive
in Vancouver, Vancouver’s best auto service
experience and we’re going to talk about
GM brand cars; their reliability.
How’re you doing Bernie?
Bernie: I’m doing very well.
Mark: So GM has a lot of brands of cars and
trucks and some of them are similar, they’ve
cut some of that extra stuff out there but
is there any one that’s better than the
other?
Bernie: Well I would say not, I mean GM vehicles,
so we’re going to talk just about cars in
this, in this particular hangout.
But I mean yeah there’s a lot of similarities
among GM brands of vehicles, they share engines
between say Chevrolet and while it used to
be Pontiac and Buick and Chevrolet would often
share the same engine and Oldsmobile as well
and Oldsmobile and Cadillac would share some,
some different engines.
Cadillac is a little bit, Cadillac is unique,
they have a lot of engines that you don’t
see in Chevys but sometimes over the years
they’ve blended things together.
Is one brand better than the other?
Not, not really, they’re all built the same
way, same factory, they kind of all compete
against each other and in the marketplace
but yes as you mentioned GM’s really cut
things down, there used to be you know, there’s
now Chevrolet still there but and Buick is
still there but Pontiac’s gone which they’re
kind of more sporty line of cars and Oldsmobile
which is a sort of lower end luxury car, those,
those have been gone for a while and then
Saturn is I don’t know what, that was a
kind of an interesting experiment for GM.
Saturn was actually, their cars were unique
to start off with but as time went by they
started sharing things among, with different
cars on the platform but, you know Saturn
had a, speaking of Saturn it had a very bad
reputation for a long time but my personal
experience of them is that they actually weren’t
bad cars but they had a few quirks and issues
but you know there’s still some Saturn’s
that are you know, 15 years, 20 years old
that are running around that are still good
cars.
Mark: So for GM how reliable, would you rate
them overall?
Bernie: I’d say, I consider them fair, I
mean they are, they’re better than they
used to be these days like over the last ten
or more years they’re a lot better and I
think about some of their, some of their lower
end cars like the Chevy Cavalier, it used
to be a piece of junk, I mean they don’t
make the Cavalier any more but you know, as
that line evolved they started getting better
and some of the reliability problems like
blown head gaskets just didn’t happen anymore.
What you’re finished with is a cheap car
that has, use the word finish, has a crappy
finish but the reliability of the car was
pretty good.
I think overall that they’re pretty good,
there again I always compare it with the Japanese,
the Toyota and Honda, they’re not as reliable
but they’re often much lower price point
so you have to spend a few dollar on repair,
you’re probably still further ahead buying
a Japanese car; but yeah, I’d say nothing
specifically jumps out at me about a list
of everything about GM engines is bad, they’re
generally overall pretty good product.
Mark: So any specific common problems?
Bernie: You know nothing that really leaps
out at me, there’s such a variety of different,
they have such a large line of cars, such
a variety that there’s really, there’s
a lot of little things here and there but
nothing really that’s, that’s you know,
you’ve got to avoid this car because, you
know these engines all blow up or this happens,
there are specific, there are specific problems
but they’re just so, there’s such a broad
range it’s hard to speak on anything in
particular.
Mark: So you know there’s, we talked a little
bit about Cadillac being different, they make
a few different unique vehicles; the Corvette
and the Chevy Volt for instance, how are those
vehicles?
Bernie: Good, they’re pretty good, I mean
I’ve never worked on a Volt, I mean it’s
not a, there’s very few Volts around, they’re
rare to see, it’s kind of neat concept of
a car because you’ve got that plug-in electric
car which is great for most people’s use,
you almost never run the engine but, you know
if you decide to go to Calgary, you know tomorrow
you can just hop in the car and you don’t
have to worry about where we’re going to
find a charging station so I really think
it really gives you the best of both worlds.
Just did a little reading, I mean the reliability
reports on them are not fantastic but I think
overall they’re pretty good.
I know people who own them speak really highly
of them.
So there’s the Volt, a really unique car
and really most people are going to get it
fixed at the dealer for the time being and
who knows again how long those cars are going
to be around, when they’re 10 or 15 years
old people may not want them anymore because
you know, there’s going to be better electric
technology and people will just opt to buy
that, why would you even want to be saddled
with an old electric complex technology.
Corvettes, I mean great car, unique sports
car, typically always reliable, good cars,
fun.
A Cadillac you know Cadillac’s is a unique
line again, there good cars, the only I’d
say about Cadillac’s is over time once they
start getting older they’ve historically
had some unique engines that are extremely
difficult and expensive to fix so you know
with the Cadillac you probably don’t want
to, want to own an old one but the newer ones
are a lot of fun.
I say old like 15 – 20 years old kind of
thing you know, 10 years is probably okay.
Mark: Right, well there you go, there’s
the quick synopsis of the GM brands, their
reliability based on, how many years you’ve
been working on cars now Bernie?
Bernie: Rolling my head, just look up into
my head to think about that, about 35 years,
yeah over 35 years actually.
Mark: So that’s from the view from the west
coast of Vancouver, 35 years of experience
of fixing cars here in Vancouver and the reliability
of GM.
Thanks Bernie.
Bernie: You’re welcome.

I Can’t Believe I Said This About Chevy

I Can’t Believe I Said This About Chevy

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines
g garner says Scotty what do you
think of the chevy cobalt 4-cylinder not
much okay not for a small engine it puts
out a decent amount of power yes they
don't hold up over time the whole car
itself is a pile of junk and it doesn't
hold up over time if you want to get a
small car that's got some zip and it's
gonna last a long time go buy a Toyota or
Honda they run circles around those
things but on the other hand I always
want to tell people you got options
let's say you're gonna buy you used one
you can pick those things up for down to
nothing and if you don't mind driving
around one if you get it so cheap for
$1,000 $1,500 and it still runs and
shifts okay and it lasts a while now
you're making out okay I mean in a long
run now it's not a good decision but if
you can get one cheap enough what the
heck you're never gonna get a good
Toyota or Honda cheap because everybody
knows they're good cars and they go for
a lot of money use but those things they
got bad reputation for various good
reasons but you can get them dirt cheap
I've had customers buy those old sandals
for $1000 and driving for four or five
years and maybe spend five six hundred
bucks with me fixing them over four
years that's perfectly fine form you
know on their ugly looking cars and
those particularly ones that bashes on
them so they got then real cheap but if
you want a knock around car something like
that could be okay if you get a dirt
cheap but just don't think it's gonna
last forever
and you're gonna be able to drive it for
twenty thirty thousand miles a year and
drive it for years that's not gonna happen
Nick 20s says Scotty what are your
thoughts on discount gasoline sold
Costco Kroger and kwiki gasoline any
good okay every gasoline sold in the
United States has to meet certain
minimum standards its law and generally
in each area there's all you want to
supply or gasoline all the other
companies buy it like shell is the
largest refinery in the world the last
time I checked so a lot of the gasoline
is refined by shell and then say if you
buy Exxon gasoline in your area if shell
made the gasoline your buying shell gas
and the only difference does Exxon is
putting their protect
and it is on top of it and dying at the
color that they want their gasoline to
look so you know it's not like you got
a wide choice it where the actual
gas things coming from anyways it's the
same thing with batteries there's only a
handful of battery manufacturers left
over in the United States so even though
there's 40 different brands if there's
only three companies making them the
brand doesn't really mean up that much
you gotta find out who's making that
brand for gasoline in most areas same
company making all of it,
trade be hey from Canada I got an 06 5
speed manual Volkswagen Jetta 1.9 TDI
with 173 thousand miles on it
hey you're in Canada you're supposed to
say kilometres I'm wondering should I
sell it before it has engine problems or
hold on to it I got a new timing belt
and clutch I change the oil every 5,000
miles and do highway driving what the
heck drive it it's worth very little
with that mileage on it and being 14
years old and you never know I've seen
some of those things with 300,000 miles
on I just say drive it till the wheel
falls off cuz if you try selling up now
you're gonna get nothing for the vehicle
what the heck there's Scotty telling you
to keep a VW that's a rarity I
believe me but it's a standard
transmission it's a diesel it runs just
keep driving it chains and you never
know how long this thing's gonna last
let's you're gonna get much worried if
you sell it and what the heck up you get
years more out of it you're making out
like a bandit, ronald regan, gee I thought
he was dead
hey Scotty my daughter's 2010 Ford
Focus started cranking by a few
seconds normally it starts right up
tried to spray cleaner remedies and it's
slightly better but still randomly
cranks longer does the cleaning helped
of course try it again now if it still
doesn't change the fuel filter first
since the fuel filter gets clogged it'll
do that that doesn't do it
pressure test a fuel pump now you always
have to change the fuel filter and a ten
year old car before you price your test
the fuel pump because if the fuel
filters clogged up you're gonna get
false readings well why don't you change
the filter if that doesn't fix it then
test the fuel pump pressure and if it's low
replace it, it mean design its way out
which is typical when they get to be 10
years old like that it could just be
that the fuel pump is starting to go out
from old age they're electric pumps
after a while they wear out just like
anything else does, flabo I'm cleaning out
my dad's old
garage I found tons of old new stock 62
Ford parts and several cases of oil
transmission fluid in the old metal case
is dated 1971 is that me this oil still
good I mean you might want to use it for
a lawn mower or something if you wanted but
don't do that either,
put in on ebay people collect
stuff like that you won't believe what
people sometimes will pay for these old
cans with the old oil in them and even
the old 1962 Ford parts put it on eBay
you never know what people are gonna bid
for these days and those old metal cans
that they don't make anymore
those are collectors items lots of guys
have museums they want that stuff and
they pay a pretty penny for it why use
it for oil they can get for two dollars
a quart when you don't know what you're
gonna get for that stuff when it's that
old and this is the original can people
collect all kinds of weird stuff these
days they might give some pretty good
money for that stuff so I put it on eBay
if I were you, honest mechanic Scotty my
grandpa's a 69 Firebird 400 hasn't run
in 20 years I want a surprise I'm
getting it run I know I need a battery
plugs tires and brake fluid there I also
need new fuel lines and brake hose lines
what else do I need you want to check
anything that's rubber to see if it's
cracked and stuff cuz you don't want to
be on safe but of course yes to be
perfectly safe you'd have to do the
whole car all the rubber stuff and
that's an awful lot of money so you're
gonna want to clean the gas tank out
there's probably crowd in it putting in
fuel and change the fuel filter I
changed the coolant and you know why all
transmission fluid and then see what
happens because you don't want to go too
far until you see that it's running and
that it's going good once you do all
that don't give it a grandpa drive it
for you know 10 15 20 miles and see if
there's anything that's leaking if
anything's not working correctly and
then kind of go from there because when
you get an old vehicle like that I mean
it's a 69 you kind of restore it
gradually if it's gonna be kind of a toy
car the original equipment cost a
fortune to do and most people aren't
gonna do that you want to make it a safe
car do what I said and then drive it
around for you know 20 30 40 miles and
see how it feels and then
from there, so if you never want to miss
another one of my new car repair videos
remember to ring that Bell

2015 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel - TestDriveNow.com Review by Auto Critic Steve Hammes | TestDriveNow

2015 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel - TestDriveNow.com Review by Auto Critic Steve Hammes | TestDriveNow

Steve Hammes New Car Reviews:

Hear that? That's a sound you haven't heard
from a Chevy car in a while. In my 17 years
of test drives this is the first American
car I've had with a Diesel engine. But the
headline here is 46mpg highway and it comes
courtesy of the Chevy Cruze.
When 50-state compliant diesel engines began
showing up a few years ago, the push was primarily
engineered by the VW Group. Gas prices were
sky high and alt fuel vehicles were in consumers’
minds.
2015 Chevrolet Cruze DieselSo Chevy decided
to see how a small diesel-powered car would
do against competitors’ hybrids and other
diesel models. Now in its 2nd year, Chevy’s
best-selling global car with a 2.0-liter clean
turbo-diesel is the choice for about one out
of every 10 Cruze buyers in the U.S. GM’s
unreliable diesel models from the 80s left
Americans with a negative impression of this
gasoline alternative but with so many advancements
in the technology since then, diesel cars
nowadays are no more of a concern than any
other propulsion you may choose.
So why go Cruze Diesel? It’s all about fuel
economy and torque with secondary considerations
given to a diesel engine’s reputation for
longevity. In this case, the engine was specifically
adapted for the U.S. market, meeting stringent
emission standards while producing peak torque
of 264 pound-feet that gives this Cruze an
instant on feeling when you press the go pedal,
particularly impressive in passing maneuvers
on the highway. Don’t measure this engine’s
strength by its mediocre 0-to-60mph time of
about 8.5 seconds; it has the low-end gumption
drivers appreciate when stepping off. As for
the efficiency angle, as paired with the only
available transmission – this 6-speed auto
– the city/highway spread of 19mpg is greater
than that of any other new vehicle. Rated
at 27mpg city/46mpg highway and 33mpg combined,
the Cruze Diesel’s return on investment
will greatly depend on where you drive most
of the time. I averaged 35mpg for the week
and during a highway run from NYC to Albany
I managed over 45mpg. So unlike some other
alternative powertrains, the impressive diesel
mileage numbers are once again for real.
The most obvious difference between the Cruze
Diesel and the Jetta TDI is the clatter heard
from the engine. VW really knows how to mute
the typical diesel sounds while Chevy makes
it loud and proud. Does that bother me? Well,
it's a little off-putting and everyone who
stands near it or rides in it instantly noticed
but I'm sure to some diesel aficionados it
sounds like a badge of honor.
It’s also not a sporty car when running
on these fuel-saving tires, instead it promotes
comfortable cruising – diesel sounds and
all. There were also occasions where the 6-speed
felt confused.
The Cruze debuts an updated front fascia this
year with LED daytime running lights and the
Diesel model comes with a rear spoiler, an
aero performance package and ultra low-rolling
resistance tires. Inside, Apple Siri integration
is a welcome addition as is OnStar with 4G,
not 3G, built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. The sport
mesh trim used around the cabin is a unique
look and though the next generation Cruze
will debut shortly as a 2016 model, this car
has maintained its premium composure quite
well with features such as a back-up cam,
side blind zone and rear cross traffic alert
the very agreeable Chevy MyLink system with
navigation. Remote start is always appreciated,
too. And as long as the folks in the front
aren’t too long legged, the rear seats are
useable and are elevated for better forward
visibility.
Priced as the premium model in the Cruze lineup
from $26,485 and stickered here for $29,105,
the Cruze Diesel’s nemesis is the gas fueled
Cruze Eco which the EPA estimates costs $100
less per year to fuel with the culprit being
the high cost of diesel vs. a gallon of regular.

The Truth About Buying a Used Infiniti Car

The Truth About Buying a Used Infiniti Car

Scotty Kilmer:

Rev up you engines,
Martin Sue says scotty how are you,
are Infiniti I30's from 1996-99 good cars,
would they be reliable and low maintenance
cars since they're similar to the Nissan Maxima
of the same era with the same engine,
yes they were well made cars it was after
that the Renault merged with Nissan so they
were better made cars those days,
now you do have to realize that if you do
get a 1996 that's a 23 year old car, it's
an old car don't pay much for one,
regardless you're not going to get any warranty
on it,
but they can still be good cars yes,
but don't ever pay much for a 23 year old
car,
it's foolhardy because you're not getting
any warranty now the only way I'd pay money
for a car like that is if you really liked
it and you got it from the original owner
and it was an old man and he had 60,000 miles
on it or something,
otherwise you don't pay too much because they're
going to have mileage and they're just old,
McLovin's fun house says,
how long can an average car sit when it's
turned off without the battery dying in it,
ok that depends on what kind of car you got,
see all cars these days have some parasitic
drain when you turn it off the battery does
drain power and that's because there's all
these computer modules now a days,
now if you take a really high end car like
a Mercedes,
I've seen them drain the battery in a week
because they're running so much stuff, burglar
alarms system all kinds of computer stuff
are running the whole time,
so a lot of time they'll go out in a short
period of time,
but you take like a Toyota or a Honda they
generally don't drain that much I've had customer
leave them at the airport for a month and
get back in and they start right back up with
no problems at all,
but if you're ever really worried I made that
video a few weeks ago about those solar battery
chargers if you're sitting at an airport for
like 60-70 bucks you can buy a nice solar
battery charger, plug it into the cigarette
lighter and leave it on the dash,
and that will keep it charged and you don't
have to worry about the battery going bad,
it's not really a bad idea,
Kevin says I want to buy a Silverado 2500
HD gas job with a 6 liter gasoline engine,
any advice or should I save up for a diesel,
yes save up for a diesel, if you want a big
truck like that you're better off with a diesel,
they're made to haul stuff, they're made to
tow stuff and that's just a better deal if
you're going to pull a lot of weight you won't
be happy with a gasoline engine,
because gasoline engines are gas hogs when
they're pulling a lot of weight, they're not
made for towing that's why all the big trucks
the 19 wheelers are diesel because if they
were gasoline engines, they'd get 3 or 4 miles
a gallon and that's why they're diesels,
save up for the diesel it would be a wiser
one and truthfully I'd save up for the Ford
diesel if I were you I wouldn't buy a GM diesel
I'd buy the Ford before that they're better
made,
Dora says, scotty do chemical rust treatments
actually work,
well to some extent they do, realize that
they're not miracles,
if you have a rust bucket and you get that
chemical treatment that you put on that says,
converts rust into paint primer, now it does
to some extent but only weakly rusted stuff,
like if you've got a big area and it's all
rusted and it's flaking off,
you got to at least get sandpaper and a metal
brush and wipe off all the pieces that flake
off that fall off, sand it down to the bare
metal and then you can use that rust preventative
paint stuff that will help it somewhat but
you know if you're really rotten away you
got to cut all the rust away weld on now metal,
and then prime it and then paint it, that's
the only thing that's really going to last,
but if you got little surface stuff and you
can buff it off a little,
yeah they can last for a while, I use to use
them when I was a kid and I didn't have any
money and sometimes it lasts for 3 or 4 years
before it would start to rust through again,
Sultan says scotty my car gives an error code,
throttle position sensor failure,
and the car hesitates and shuts off at low
rpm what should I do, well change the throttle
position sensor if you've got a car that you
can change it,
on many cars you can buy just the throttle
position sensor bolt it off and bolt another
one on and away you go,
now other cars you have to buy the entire
throttle assembly, a lot of modern cars are
so computerized and they're so complex that
they only allow you to buy the entire throttle
assembly, I had a Ford a few weeks ago that
was like 4 years old and the throttle assembly
was bad and I had to buy the whole throttle
assembly but Ford knew they had a problem
so I went to the dealer and they had a newly
designed one, it was only like hundred and
fifty bucks so I bought the brand new one
and put it on and it ran fine,
but if you can buy a throttle position sensor
go to a place like Autozone and see if they
sell them, just replace the sensor first,
so if you never want to miss another one of
my new car repair videos remember to ring
that bell!

GM Just Threw Away the Chevy Camaro

GM Just Threw Away the Chevy Camaro

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, GM says that the six
generations Chevy Camaro z/28 program
has been cancelled all right now for the
car guys out there that are the muscle
cars
there have been rumors going around that
they're not going to be making the
Camaros in the future they don't have
any particular plans that they have
set in stone with it there's even some
rumors that they're gonna make an
all electric cars which may be what
they're going to do they're canceling a
sixth generation I'm assuming that they
are gonna stop making Camaros they
stopped making the things a few years
back and then they brought them back
again they had a bunch of quality
control with the ones they were making
in Quebec and so then they just stopped
making them entirely I mean those are
terrible machines in the end I had them
where the wiring harnesses would go out
to transmissions and blow up and they
brought them back again I who knows
maybe they'll just eventually have them
only as an electric car and shelving the
production of any sixth generation
Camaro kind of tells me they yeah
they're maybe they're thinking about
making the mental electric cars only
time will tell her that but you're
obviously thinking about getting rid of
Camaro is a muscle car by not producing
these, ash says hey my wife has
an old ML 320 it's forty eight thousand
mile keep it and driving myself for
selling wife wants a new car
forty-eight thousand miles isn't much if
you haven't had problems with it it
hasn't been wrecked flooded or stolen
you might as well keep it you said it's
an old one if it's an old one it has
virtually no value nobody wants to buy
an old Mercedes the resale value was
cramped but with 48,000 miles generally
don't fall apart until they are over
100,000 miles so what the heck you got
it why not use it for your car and then
get your wife another car obviously
you'll put that many miles on the cars
it still could last a while cuz you
getting nothing selling if it works okay
now what the heck I personally wouldn't
buy one but you already have it so you
might as well driving around you'll get
much for it if you try selling it, Bologna is
there any way to buy nitrogen to fill
your tires yeah oh that's kind of an
interesting subject matter realize that
Earth's atmosphere is already something
like eighty percent nitrogen dress is
about 20 percent oxygen some trace
elements but
about 80% nitrogen already so what
difference does it really make if you
have a 100% nitrogen you tires or 80%
for years people tried to sell me as a
mechanic at my shop systems that purify
the nitrogen in our atmosphere and turn it
into almost a hundred percent
nitrogen and filling the tires with
because theoretically it doesn't oxidize
inside and the temperatures don't affect
it that much when they change hot or
cold or they do use nitrogen I believe
in like the jet airplanes because
they're up at 50,000 feet and it gets
really cold there and the pressure the
tires would keep going up and down for
them and it makes sense but you're not
driving your car at 50,000 feet out
there so you know if you can find a
place that sells the stuff go right
ahead but far as I'm concerned you're
mainly wasting your money on that stuff
for a car that you're driving every day
nobody's approached me in the last year
trying to sell me one of these stupid
nitrogen systems and it cost thousands
of dollars so so if anybody has one
they're gonna charge your pretty penny
to fill up your tires cause hey they had
to pay a bunch of money for the stupid
machine
Daniel pina says hey Scotty is the 2007
f-150 a reliable vehicle these days
yeah the previous owner took care of it
2007 f-150 is pretty reliable vehicle
they're much better with the v8 sixes meh
any vehicle if you're talking about
buying a used one have a mechanic like
me check it out before you show your
money out cuz you don't know something's
wrecked flooded stolen there's all kinds
of things you can go around and with our
fancy machines we can tell I spend about
an hour checking out used cars I just
checked out a used car for a guy this
morning you know it's a fourth of July, I
forgot
he made an appointment so I got up
there anyways they can't be great good
cars but you want to make sure there
isn't a problem in it in the first place
cuz you're not gonna get a guarantee
demon says Scotty I got a
2005 Chrysler Sebring Convertible with
eighty two thousand miles my first car
any thoughts baby that thing that was a
big lemon Mobil that they made the v6
engines those things were terrible it's
still running it's 82 thousand miles
let's say it runs and it shifts good now
baby it you got it it's a convertible a
lot of times people think of verticals
are worth money but convertibles aren't
because everybody knows there were
terrible cars but you gotta take care of
a change the oil every 3,000 miles don't
overheat the engine don't race it don't
peel off
pretend you're a little old lady driving
that car and maybe the last one I got
some little old lady
drive them and they're still going okay
because they drive slow but all the men
that I knew that drove them hard they
all burn out either the engine or the
transmission or both, so if you never
want to miss another one of my new car
repair videos, remember to ring that Bell

2016 Chevrolet Cruze | CarGurus Test Drive Review

2016 Chevrolet Cruze | CarGurus Test Drive Review

CarGurus:

The Chevrolet Cruze is an affordable,
fuel-efficient car, but year after year
it keeps getting outsold by the Honda
Civic, Toyota Corolla, and the Ford Focus.
I'm Clifford Atiyeh with CarGurus, and
this is the 2016 Cruze.
Now that it's in the second generation,
is it worth the attention?
Let's take a drive and find out.
So driving the Cruze you feel the
steering wheel, which is heated on our
Premier trim - very nice - but these are not
paddle shifters behind me here, they're
actually
volume and seat controls for the radio,
which is nice, but there's really no
manual control at all of the car.
So there's no SS version of the Cruze,
not like the Cobalt that they used to
have from years ago, but the steering is
pretty good actually for this
model.
We're riding on 17-inch tires. You can
actually move up to 18s if you order
the RS package, but the ride is actually
really composed over pretty much
everything, and the same goes for
the engine. There's only one engine available now
in the Cruze - it's a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder. It's 153 horsepower and
177 pound-feet of torque. That may not sound like a lot, but the
gearing on the 6-speed automatic is
such that it doesn't really have to
downshift as much, because there's a lot more torque now than the previous car.
So before the Cruze had a separate Eco
trim, which is only a really small
percentage of cars you could find on the lot, that had the highest fuel economy. That's
no longer the case now. Our car gets 40
miles per gallon on the highway, as rated
by the EPA, and 30 in the city. Now
depending on the wheel size and other
various trim choices you have, that can
go as high as 42 on the highway.
In combined driving we've averaged about 36 miles per gallon.
That's a pretty good number for a car this
size. Even under full throttle
the Chevy Cruze is actually really quiet in
here - you don't really get a sense that
the car is vibrating, that it's groaning. Part
of that also have to do that there is no
continuously variable transmission like
you see in some Nissans and some Hondas.
That tends to keep the revs up really
high all the time so that the car always
feels like it's straining. This
transmission is really smooth even
though it's not like a 7- or 8-
speed or even the 9-speed automatic
transmissions that you're seeing
nowadays. The ratios are pretty good, and
that means that to be honest I'm not
really finding that I'm lacking for power.
The Cruze also has an automatic
stop/start system that will shut down
the engine when you're fully stopped. Uh,
it's kind of annoying because i actually
there's no way to turn it off. There's no
switches here,
there's no settings in the infotainment
system or in this main central screen
here.
I haven't found it. Now the engine just
restarted and we have to go,
but as you see we have the air
conditioning on, too, and so it really can't
stay off for very long because running
off the main 12-volt battery.
This is not a hybrid. A lot of car makers
are doing this to promote higher EPA
numbers, but in reality it doesn't really
do that much - just kind of upsets you.
So that is annoying - I wish there was a
button for that, but there isn't.
I was driving for about 2
hours this morning, and the seats are
actually quite good.
They're not at all flat - they're actually
pretty supportive. Moving around
not too badly here - not that you would do
that in normal driving, but on some of
these little fast switchbacks,
it's nice to know that you can still be
in place. Again it's not a sports sedan, and it's not
supposed to be, so you can't really get
your hopes up if you're in this part of
the market. You would probably get a
used 3 Series, but you can also search for
that on CarGurus if you want to, but you're here to learn about this car. So
it's not torturous to sit in the back of
a Cruze, cause there's actually quite a lot of leg-
room - you almost think you're in a
midsize car, but it's quite nice.
Optional heated rear seats that we have
here and a 120-volt household outlet.
The only problem really - there's enough
headroom, there's enough legroom -
there's no center headrest - that's kind
of an oversight.
It would be nice and certainly an added
safety feature, but what is good is there's
10 standard airbags in this car
including rear side airbags.
Those aren't federally mandated, and you
hardly see them even as an option in
luxury cars, so the fact that you can get
one in a Chevy Cruze? That's pretty good.
So there's 14.8 cubic feet of cargo space
here in the trunk, and it's a really
nicely designed cargo hold.
You don't even need to fold the seats
down. Now it's a little bit less than the
Civic in total room, but more than the
Corolla.
Now if this isn't enough for you, for 2017
there's a hatchback model of the Cruze coming
this fall. The nav in our car has an 8-inch
screen, the standard car has a 7-inch.
It's a touchscreen - it's got all the familiar
apps that you're seeing on iPads and all
the other tablets these days. All these
apps here can be rearranged
if you touch and hold it. You can move
things around to anywhere you like.
It's got all the systems like Bluetooth
and everything else you're used to. This
also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,
so if you have a connected smartphone
with a USB cable, that will replace the
regular Chevrolet screen with the
smartphone display right on here so you
can easily access it.
We've also got Pandora on here, we've got
live weather, because it's also comes
with Sirius XM. This vehicle also has an
onboard Wi-Fi connection - it's a 4G LTE
system through OnStar. OnStar now has
that trial, essentially the
3-gigabyte trial that you get when you buy
the car, and then of course everything
expires, like most new cars, and you
have to have a monthly fee. Only problem
is with this touchscreen,
we're parked in an area right now where
there's shade. Because there's no no covering
over it, it can really be washed out in
direct sunlight, and that's kind of a
problem with a lot of screens.
Our car has the Sun and Sound package,
and that has obviously a sunroof, it's got better sound, it's got a 9-speaker Bose
system versus the standard car's 4
speakers, and we also have navigation - it's an 8-
inch screen versus the standard 7 inch. Now for $27,000 there actually are a few
options that this car doesn't have. You
can load up a Cruze all the way up to a
little over 29, and that's with two
Driver Confidence packages.
Those are a bunch of driver-assist
features like blind-spot alert, and you
have lane-change assistance,
you've got Lane-Keep Assist, which will
actually move the steering wheel for you
to center the car between the lanes, and
also forward-collision alert. Those
are nice to have, but again those aren't
very critical. Average transaction prices
for new cars are over $30,000 these days, so it's not too
surprising to see a $27,000
Chevy Cruze. Our car's pretty fully loaded
and offers a lot of refinement, some
luxury, and a lot of technology you won't
find elsewhere.
It's not as sporty as the Ford Focus, but
if you value refinement, you'll probably
like this car more than the others.
This is an incredibly competitive
segment, so we'd like to hear from you.
Would you consider a Cruze over an Elantra, over a Focus, Civic, Corolla?
