Why GM Failed In India

Why GM Failed In India

CNBC:

Over the last 20 years, the
Indian automotive market has grown from
about 500,000 new passenger cars,
hatchbacks, sedans and utilities to
about 3.5
million in 2018.
The market has an expected compound annual
growth rate of about 5 to
6 percent over the next 10 years.
But, some automakers have struggled
to make it work.
Among them is General
Motors, the largest U.S.
car company. GM stopped selling cars in
India in 2017 after years of
declining market share.
It's a striking move for GM, which
in recent years has also closed
shop in other regions around the
world, as leadership focuses on
maximizing profits and making investments
in new technologies such as
electric power trains
and mobility services.
With a population of more than
1 billion people, India is becoming
one of the world's
largest automotive markets.
The country is poised to surpass
Japan as the world's third biggest
new car market in 2021.
So while there is ample
opportunity for automakers, the Indian
landscape has been particularly difficult
to navigate, especially for
American firms. GM watched its share
of the Indian market erode
steadily over several years, bottoming out
at about one percent in
2016 just before the
automaker pulled out.
So if the Indian market is
growing, why did GM struggle, especially
when GM has been
so successful in China?
To be fair, quite a few automakers
tend to have difficulty in the
Indian market. First of all, India
is a massive country with a
diverse population of roughly 1.3
billion people.
India, I think, we are
definitely a complex market.
The income levels
are quite heterogeneous.
We are divided, actually into
urban India and rural India.
The consumer requirements are actually
different even the needs are
different in both these markets.
There are a few criteria a
mass market automaker ought to meet.
They are fuel efficiency, resale
value, proximity of service stations
and the affordability of parts
and low servicing costs.
I think first thing is price.
We are a country with a
very low per capita income.
Indians are very price sensitive.
But price is not the only factor.
So now the customer also needs
some more value, for example, with
styling elements. And then, I think,
the consumer also wants a global
brand. They want a
brand which is aspirational.
The consumer wants an overall combination of
all P's, you know it may
be product, it may be
price, it may be positioning.
Which makes the things
quite complicated for OEMs.
These might seem pretty attainable,
but many automakers have
struggled to meet these
in the country.
There are a couple of companies who
have managed to crack that code
and there are several more with shares
of the market ranging in size
from small to smaller.
By far, the most successful automaker
in India is the Japanese firm
Suzuki, which alone owns
half the Indian market.
Suzuki has enjoyed something of
a first mover advantage.
It was the first major automaker to
enter India, and it did so
through a joint venture
with Indian manufacturer Maruti.
Suzuki also specializes in highly
fuel efficient vehicles, which are
extremely important in
the Indian market.
After Suzuki, Korean maker Hyundai is
the second largest with 16
percent of the Indian market.
After that, Indian, Japanese and Korean
makers such as Honda, Tata,
Kia and Mahindra all more or less
have equal degrees of market share.
Kia in particular, is a relatively
late coming brand that has been
able to succeed in India.
I think an excellent example is
Kia Motors which recently entered, it
was a new brand and
they gave a great proposition.
They were in an SUV segment and
I think suddenly right from the month
one, we saw a great success
for this OEM, in India.
Then the remaining 10 percent of the
market is made up of others such
as Ford, Renault, BMW and Nissan.
Early on, GM entered the India market
with its Opel brand, a mass
market brand GM had
owned in Europe.
While Opel cars tended to be
affordable, they failed to resonate with
Indian buyers.
I think later on they realized that's
not a brand which is really
going to work well in India because
that was not a value proposition
which they were offering
to their customers.
But then GM introduced its Chevrolet
brand to the country, which
brought it more success.
It was a great success.
They launched a few great
products like Chevrolet Cruze Chevrolet
Beat. They had that start which
they were really looking forward.
Despite these efforts, the automaker had
trouble taking share in the
Indian market. It was the first
automaker to introduce a diesel fuel
powered car of its size.
At the time, the Chevrolet beat
was the smallest diesel powered car
customers could buy in India.
It was a strong proposition and
benefited from a government subsidy
on diesel engines.
But in the end, the
diesel Beat had few takers.
The company may also have made a
misstep by trying to introduce a
low-cost vehicle GM manufactured with
its Chinese partner SAIC called
the Chevrolet Sail.
Their plan got derailed with the
introduction of Sail because I think
they underestimated the consumer aspiration
and then, I think, the
decline started. GM also fell victim
to a kind of self-reinforcing
cycle. One challenge it struggled with
was the lack of an adequate
dealer and servicing network.
More premium brands such as Mercedes
and BMW often attract customers
with the means to travel
further for service and sales.
But, mass market brands such as
GM's Chevrolet are targeting middle
class buyers who value convenience.
Dealerships in India often sell a
single brand so GM's low sales
volumes meant a single dealer might sell
only a handful of cars in a
month and risk taking losses on
the costs of running the business.
In the end, such low market share
made it difficult for GM to justify
maintaining a presence
in the country.
The automaker officially stopped selling
cars in India on December
31, 2017.
GM told CNBC it explored many
options for its India business, but
ultimately withdrew after it
determined the increased investment
originally planned for the country would
not deliver the returns of
other global opportunities.
It continues to operate services
for existing Chevrolet customers in
the country. In September, the
automaker entered a long-term
partnership with Tata Consultancy Services,
which will do engineering
design for GM vehicles meant
for markets around the world.
The move out of India was part
of a larger pullback GM has been
making around the world as
it restructures its business.
We're seeing other automakers follow
suit as they're pruning.
They're pruning the dead branches and
focusing on where they can be
strong. For GM, this is a huge shift
because GM of old used to be all
things to everyone everywhere.
And, it has now decided that
is not the proper strategy.
The automaker told CNBC if it doesn't
see a clear path to leadership
and long term sustained profits in
a particular market, it will look
at opportunities to focus its resources
on areas that will lead to
the greatest results. It added that this
is the same approach it has
taken elsewhere.
The automaker also sold its
European operations to French carmaker
PSA in 2017.
At the time it pulled out of India
GM had two factories there, one in
the Gujarati city of Halol
and another in Talegaon.
The Halol plant was acquired by
MG Motor, the once famed British
brand now owned by Chinese
automaker SAIC Motor Corporation.
GM has a joint venture with
SAIC to produce cars in China.
Reports surfaced in November 2019 that
SAIC is also in talks to
acquire GM's Talegaon plant, along
with fellow Chinese automaker
Great Wall. GM told CNBC it
is exploring strategic options for the
plant. The move out of India was
a retreat for GM and for American
auto industry. Ford is starting
to do the same.
It's trimming some
of its offerings.
Global economy and global auto
market is slowing some.
Certainly true here in the
US, it's true in China.
There's just not enough money to
go around to every single market,
too every single vehicle line.
Look at Daimler and BMW,
they've announced major employee cuts.
But in some ways it might
have been a shrewd move.
The other thing that is happening
in the market that has never
happened before is we are on the
verge of massive disruption of the
industry. You know, we're going to
have a future of electric
vehicles, autonomous vehicles and new
ways to acquire personal
transportation and now
mobility service.
There's all kinds of things.
Nobody knows when that's going to happen
or how it's going to happen,
but it's requiring a
lot of investment.
Companies like GM just can't keep putting
a ton of money into the
future as well as a ton
of money in today's stuff.
While analysts do expect the
Indian automotive market to continue
growing in the foreseeable future, it
did hit a slump in 2019.
Maruti Suzuki sales were growing
until February 2019, but have
slipped every month, year
over year, until October.
Suzuki said in November that the slowing
Indian market was one of the
factors behind the company's falling overall
sales and net income in
its second fiscal quarter.
So I think right now the
market is going through turmoil.
Our economy is struggling and if
we only talk about the automotive
market we are talking about a decline
of minus 14 percent in 2019
calendar year light vehicles.
So obviously this year is the
kind of degrowth happening, which has
not happened in last
two decades, in India.
2020, we are just talking about a
kind of a flat growth but then
going forward, in 2021, '22, '23,
the assumption that our economy
should be back, you know, the
GDP growth rate will start growing
above seven percent. Indian
automotive analysts note the country's
auto industry has to contend
with the relatively recent rise of
mobility services such as ride
hailing. The potential of these
competing technologies is still
unknown, but could affect how
interested in car ownership Indians
remain in the future.
In the end, GM did make some of
the right choices when trying to go
into India. GM was right in
terms of localizing their products
typically for the Indian market, making
it, in line with the taxation
because they were able to save tax.
But, at the end of their day, were
really not able to match with what
the competitors were offering.
If the Indian economy picks back up,
GM may find itself trying to
profitably re-enter the country.
GM's rival Ford, which has been in
India since 1995, said in October
2019 it will create a new
joint venture with Indian manufacturer
Mahindra, which Ford said will help
it develop new products faster
and drive profitable growth.

Travelling with Bruce:

all right we're live hey everybody how
you doing it's Bruce here with traveling
with Bruce welcome to my live broadcast
today January the 17th 2018 I just have
to look at my notes you know I always
forget the date I I look at it like 20
seconds ago and I know it's January the
17th 2018 but it's a habit I always do
it just to make sure I got the right
date anyway it's it's Wednesday hump
date welcome to Wednesday um thanks for
joining me today for those of you my
regulars this is the second time I've
gone live today I mean I'm becoming a
sensation the live streaming sensation
going viral I guess um I want to thank
all my subscribers out there my fans my
viewers friends family oh my goodness
the supports just fantastic today has
been a bit of a stressful day here at
traveling with Bruce it's been a
stressful day on all of YouTube every
every YouTube creator that is kind of
like myself as a small creator we really
got a jolt in the last 24 hours from our
friends at YouTube Central Command
people will never get to meet ah gosh I
love YouTube you you folks know how
passionate I am about my channel and I
love doing what I'm doing but I gotta
tell you the the Thunderbolt came out of
the sky from from from YouTube they have
changed the rules regarding how channels
can be monetized now those of you watch
me regularly you know how passionate I
am about what I'm doing and that this is
my job I don't have a day job I'm just
looking at my notes crash 3x is here
again high crash X you're back
Theresa to McFarland hey Theresa how you
doing welcome new subscriber I you know
I'm passionate about this this channel
and when I started in August of 2017
I had no subscribers no followers no
nothing a few friends and I knew I was
going to do this but that was it
and it took me 60 days of blood sweat
tears and probably sixty videos before I
hit 10,000 views it took that long and I
wasn't giving up I was gonna go for
10,000 views cuz that was the threshold
to become monetized at that point in
time whenever your video was watched by
someone and there was an ad on it and if
they were kind enough to let the ad run
I would be paid and you build up these
these dollars then after so many dollars
those finally send you a check and I'm
up front with all of my subscribers on
my viewers this is my job and I get paid
to to talk to a camera and post videos
and give you what information that you
want to watch so that happened back in
in October then I found out that Oh
mid-november late November people who
are hitting the 10,000 numbered the
10,000 view number they were getting
monetized automatically anymore used to
be like a two-week wait period 10 days
he'd get the note get an email your
monetized people were getting it after
30 days they weren't getting it and so
people were asking what's the matter why
why am I not getting monetized what
what's happening and YouTube was saying
well we're backlogged with a whole bunch
of youtubers and we're gonna get there
Thomas Big Bear you're here how are you
buddy welcome back gayly
I'm back to from the UK all my regulars
are here fantastic if you're just
joining this challenge and you've never
been on my live chat before do what
these folks are doing here say hi to me
tell me where you're watching me from
most of those folks there I know exactly
where they are but tell me where you're
from and welcome aboard we'll open up
the question and answers anytime here
anyway people were finding out that with
10,000 so you views they couldn't they
weren't getting the monetization
green-white and what was the delay and
then we found out yesterday we now know
why you to has completely changed the
monetization landscape and they have
decided that they're gonna up the bar
significantly for youtubers to become on
a Taizo bull and I'm in limbo I'm in
this middle area the the first bar that
you have to have is you have to have
four thousand ow
of watch time over the previous 12
months now this drop dead date by the
way is February the 20th they've said
February the 20th as the drop dead date
to meet these new criteria and for
240,000 minutes
or 4,000 hours is what you have to have
Matt hey buddy you're here where to go
Austin is here hey watching from Alabama
Austin welcome your new I don't think
you've been here before
welcome to the in-crowd traveling with
Bruce followers fantastic I'm glad
you're here if you have any questions
about cruising whatever you welcome to
answer the question of course I got a
number of bits of information for you
coming up in just a few seconds I'm just
quickly recapping what's going on in the
world of YouTube now this four thousand
hour thing this isn't the problem for me
uh you folks who watch me regularly you
know I'm a good talker I could go on
forever I have as of last night about a
hundred seventy thousand minutes already
racked up since August and so in five
months and one week I've got 170,000 of
the 240 thousand minutes I need so this
seventy thousand minutes I'll have this
in about 13 to 15 days based on current
projections that's not going to be a
problem for February 20th so I got one
leg over the over the fence the other
leg is the problem one thousand
subscribers this is this is a going to
be a monumental barrier that's going to
be neat to be done Elizabeth is here I
enjoy watching you I loved cruising and
I live in Florida I don't really try to
do as much as I can my husband I are
going to try a Bahamas paradise cruise
out of the west palm for only two days
well Lizabeth welcome to my channel this
is fantastic your your I think you're a
first-timer on my life screaming I am
glad to have you
anyone else out there if you're watching
me today let me know where you're from
and and that you've joined us this is
wonderful anyway folks so as of this
morning or as of yesterday when I did my
last live I had 281 subscribers and as
of right now I'm at 289 subscribers and
I got a new subscriber just a couple
hours ago whose
watching me again write down suspect but
I I've added a couple of more but I have
to now get 711 more subscribers in about
30 days and I had estimated that I would
reach a thousand subscribers based on my
kind of projections and my analytics I
figured I would be there about mid to
late part of March just just the way it
was going but now YouTube has basically
said to myself and all the other
creators if Bruce if you don't hit a
thousand subscribers by Feb 20 going to
have probably three hundred thousand
minutes of watch time maybe three
hundred fifty thousand minutes in other
words I'm gonna have five thousand hours
of watch time plenty to qualify over
that Bart but since you won't have a
thousand subscribers we're gonna
demonetised you and that takes away some
of the marketing angles that I've been
counting on and some of the help that
I've been getting through YouTube's help
of help features that they have and I'm
just gonna keep plugging along until I
get to a thousand subscribers and then I
have to reapply to become a monetized
member of the YouTube Partner Program
and that could be one to two months too
late because you know how many people
are gonna be kicked off and let me try
to get back in YouTube will be
overwhelmed with the numbers of people
trying to get back in and for me that
means I may well be non monetizable
until April or May so this is crushing
and by April or May I expect to be 2,000
plus subscribers
five six hundred thousand minutes maybe
more we're on our way
this channel is really coming on thanks
to you folks even just so loyal to me
you're spraying the word for me and I
love it but I now have to get a push I
have to really beg for subscribers those
of you who know know me I have a Twitter
account and I do tweets all the time I
do Facebook work I do Instagram work I'm
just kind of gearing that up and
Pinterest I even have a I have a oh I
think I could remember what it is under
the on your live or under pressure and
you forget patreon I have a patreon
account or I ask for a donation of $3 a
month from people
I haven't mentioned it in months because
it is so much work for me to keep that
thing up that I just thought the time
and I'm really not interested in doing
that so much because with patreon you
have to offer rewards to people and all
kinds of other thing I'm happy to
mention my viewers names just on the air
right here on the chat I mean you don't
have to give me money for me to mention
your name and other youtubers try and do
that or they'll offer you a coaster or
something I just don't have time for
that I'm too busy doing this making
videos so the patreon thing I've just
kind of left to the side any of you want
to go to my patreon account by all means
but I'm not asking number one priority
for me gotta get a thousand subscribers
so the heat and the run is on the
countdown is on 711 to go in 30 days and
I'm gonna push as hard as I can and I'll
believe me folks if I get 850 with like
4 or 5 days to go oh the panic will be
in I love the new 5 live streams I think
I don't know what I'll do I'll find a
way but anyway your your suggestions are
great and your encouragement is great I
really appreciate a couple of other
comments now let's see here we got the
crash XS just found a new site where
human input error gives great deals on
flights it's called secret flights it is
a website that sounds pretty cool Maxis
sounds good Elizabeth let's see oh so
Matt's curious about Elizabeth what ship
are you gonna be on Elizabeth said it's
called the Bahamas paradise I believe
it's probably a retired carnival ship
that they bought it is they only leave
from West Palm and it's only two days
but it's like 200 hundred bucks or yeah
the deal there Elizabeth its I would
call it a glorified ferry it kind of
goes back and forth all the time now and
it is a retired carnival ship as a
matter fact I believe this ship was or
one like it was used by the folks at
during the hurricane to house people in
st. Thomas emergency workers were held
up put up in the ship for 30 days or so
60 days or 90 days maybe three months
and when they were rebuilding the island
and the entire disaster from the
hurricane irma hurricane Maria
they used the the ship for that and now
they brought the ship back into service
and they're putting it back on this run
which is
proving quite popular it's a quick it's
a real nice deal quickie deal so I hope
you have a good cruise on that I know
it's got its got a casino on there it's
got the pool and you know it'll have all
the features of our cruise ship of
course because it is a cruise ship so a
great way to start off I would also
suggest you take a look at cruises like
like Carnival and Royal Caribbean
they're offering something like four and
five day cruises out of Florida as well
to the Caribbean and those are a good
idea as well and then of course for any
other new new - new new new be cruisers
you know any one week cruise down the
Mexican coast for Los Angeles San Diego
or one week cruise through the Caribbean
in a winter time great idea because the
major storms just don't are not brewing
in the Caribbean at this time of the
year hurricane season is sort of
September October or maybe August
September October and that's where you
have to kind of watch the the systems
coming across the Atlantic but not to
worry if you're on a cruise it's gonna
be four on a cruise and it's doing a
seven-day Caribbean cruise like they
were when Hurricane Herman and Maria
came through these ships avoided the the
hurricanes completely and they would
just change our itinerary overnight and
the captain's can just steer the ship in
another direction and they'll give you a
seven-day cruise and you'll avoid the
worst of it now some passengers on on
some of the cruise ships so we're
supposed to have a one-week cruise when
the hurricanes hit and they couldn't get
back to Florida because of her the
Hurricanes were headed to Florida they
ended up with an 8 9 10 11 day cruise
for free they got the extra days no
extra charge of course if they wanted to
buy beer they had to pay extra for that
because they were still on the ship and
so on and if those folks some of those
folks had to get back to work you know
catch a plane out of Florida back home
to New York or Chicago they were out of
luck but I am certain that you know I
can't imagine an employer would be mad
at an employee for being on a cruise
ship that is late returning because of
our hurricane I mean you're gonna fault
an employee for that I don't think so I
hope people were too an inconvenience by
it I doubt they would have been anyway
so that's that's that let's see if
any comments here hurricane season this
June through November we usually try to
cruise during it cuz surprises are
amazing
Elizabeth you're right uh you know
that's the other thing about hurricane
season you can you can look at it two
ways you know you can say I'm avoiding
the Caribbean because the hurricane
system or I am going on a cruise because
of its hurricane season this is the time
to go because the deals are you're
absolutely right it's all a matter of
perspective and you know if you're
you're like me you know if I'm on a
cruise and it's day five and the captain
comes on and says sorry folks we can't
get back to the you know the home port
for another seven days or six days oh
gee you know what a hardship for me I
I'm a happy clam more spot time for this
guy I'll take that deal but yes the
deals in the Caribbean are very good at
that time here because it isn't winter
yet also it's still warm in most of
North America obviously and that's why
also another thing to watch is January
cruises or of course were just coming
out of January now but cruises in
January for the Caribbean are cheap very
cheap there are really good deals by the
way I wanted to tell you guys something
today on cruising there's another little
thing I picked up last night I was
telling you yesterday and I also
mentioned this last week about MSC
Cruise Lines offering a real killer deal
on the MSC sea side that that brand-new
cruise ship that they launched the
Florida about two weeks ago now two and
a half weeks ago I heard some
interesting information yesterday Gailey
says I'm gonna try that Elizabeth yeah
that's a good tip look for cruises in
the fall in a cod I caught actually a
YouTube video
a Canadian family who were on the MSC
seaside but they were on
I think the inaugural cruise out of
Europe because the ship was built in
Europe and then sailed around part of
the Mediterranean and I think then
eventually it came across across the sea
over to Miami and I'm trying remember I
went to New York first and there Miami
it doesn't really matter but anyway in
this case the the video I watched the
folks were in Spain they were just in
the area of Spain at the time this video
was put together and boy did they have
problems oh my goodness did they ever
have problems and they were not happy
campers and I mentioned this feature
about a brand new cruise ship this
little thing you got to understand about
a brand new cruise ship back about two
or three weeks ago I did a video about
our cruise awards that that were honored
cruise critic comm was always was
mentioning the best cruise ships best
value for your money all kinds of
categories you know for ocean liners and
they named the MSC seaside best new ship
of the year and I commented at the time
that you know I don't know if that's
such a good idea
because when they did that no one had
been on the ship as a paying passenger
at that point in time so how would you
know that it is one of the best ships
out in the seas when no one has
experienced it right a couple more
comments here we're just gonna double
check here Matt we tried the MSC seaside
and we didn't think the food was good at
all but the actual ship was stunning
matt saying that i for i didn't know you
were on that ship that's awesome and if
i if you said it before and i forgot and
I apologize Elizabeth for example August
cruise for four of us okay Elizabeth
this is this back to the Caribbean deal
for example August cruise for four of us
two adults two kids a balcony carnival
carnival Liberty five-day cruise 1200
bucks in June we're talking about the
same cruise same ship inside cabin 2,100
bucks there you go and for those of you
who are watching me live wondering why
am i reading these comments when you can
see them yourself I am talking to the
viewers that are gonna watch this video
tonight tomorrow next week next year
this video will be on my channel going
forward and you can't read the comments
when you see this video tonight or
tomorrow just live okay
that's why I matching it there you go
nine hundred dollars difference balcony
the inside yeah it's definitely worth
your while any folks out there who just
joining me do me a favor give me a
thumbs up that you're here send me a
little message tell me where you're
watching me from welcome aboard to
traveling with Bruce ask me anything you
want about cruising we are opening this
floor up to discussions back to the msec
side and Matt you're bang on I was
telling the viewers here about a video I
just saw about a family on the inaugural
cruise
and they were in Spain at the time they
had they had an ocean view room they
were on Deck five or something like that
and they made a comment that shot the
heck out of me they were saying that at
5:00 to 7:00 in the morning for two
solid hours they would hear these
banging sounds these these ungodly
banging sounds and they knew where they
were coming from from down below they're
coming from the fourth level and that is
the crew level where all the the storage
is at the refrigerators are at where you
keep the the food or you have areas for
the waist you have machinery laundry
facilities where the laundry is kept at
and what they were speculating and what
they ended up doing is they talked to
crews members kind of on the Qt and they
found out from crews members that these
were rolling containers that like can
hold you know a thousand towels or
something like that and the crew have to
move them around to get the dirty ones
over to the laundry and the clean ones
over to the thing and there are these
elevators there that are only for crew
only there like freight elevators for
the crew to move the bedding and
everything up down the the the levels of
the ship the elevators we've never get
to use wouldn't want to anyway
and I guess the banging sound was coming
from there and it woke them up they were
wondering what the heck was going they
thought someone's on the ship and then
they they realized every day was the
same thing they went to the front desk
the complain about it and don't know if
this management is new but maybe they
are too and they mentioned it to the
management and the management said yeah
well we think that's your electronic
equipment like it's my stereo that's
what it is at 4:00 in the morning it's
like it's my stereo every morning like
they were not getting a straight answer
as to what actually was going on it was
not was not pretty what wasn't gonna say
Paula hi Paula you're here way to go
nice to have you
let's see we got Dalton see around
Dalton good bye
there we go Dalton's gone I saw that
crash accessing I saw that family's
three-part video review oh it was crazy
then up to the being sick for three days
at the end it was not a good time for
them crash X he saw exactly what I saw
that's exactly what I was talking about
just a terrible experience let's see her
c5 what what have I done
Oh am I still here oh I'm here I'm here
sorry sorry folks I'm just going between
screens because I had to get rid of a
nasty nasty guy
sailing msec side in November Theresa
I'm crossing my fingers for you I'm
pretty sure by then things will be
cleared up because this is I'm sure a
lot of it is new ship issues first time
ship that's sure what type of thing
Elizabeth sing I'm sure why anyone be
negative Liz I have no idea people have
nothing better to do with themselves and
I have to watch for him and I can I can
block them so that's what I do
Dalton still here brews all wonderful
dolls and it's wonderful Oh wonderful
thanks for thanks for being with us and
and you know being a being a part of our
show you know we really don't need the
nonsense but anyway we'll see what
happened anyway back to this msec side
my goodness
the video was absolutely unreal it was
it was it was just just terrible as
crash saying what was happening was just
amazing they were they were laying into
leaky sinks like the sinks and bathrooms
of vodka
they were leaking toilets were backing
up some people are talking about Marcus
here hey Mark how you doing good nice to
have you were you from more tell me
where you from Lucia Lucia cruz ik is
here from Long Island New York welcome
from Long Island a New Yorker
fantastic Teresa says I was supposed to
go on it and if Emory and switched for
that reason get a kinks up nice move
Teresa this is talking about the msec
site well done Elizabeth says can I can
I ask you why I can only type 200 words
I'm kind of new to this but it goes it
goes by quick Elizabeth I don't know I
think it's the software that YouTube is
built into this system I am
honestly I'm using an archaic basic live
feed type system streaming system and
it's what they're providing me and so
you know kind of gotta go you know do
the best you can with what you got I
apologize I am looking to upgrade my
software to think it's called OSC and
hopefully I'll be able to expand my chat
size but I'm not sure if I can we'll
find out how that works
mark hanover pennsylvania way to go
hanover a way to go welcome Paula told
me about you she loves your show follows
also from Hanover PA follows a Steeler
fan or us Steeler fan we were crushed my
wife's a massive Steeler fan teased
crushed and that's this I don't I think
they don't want you to write essays well
okay but 200 characters this 200
characters I don't know what can I say
Elizabeth says no apologies I just have
a lot to say I'm the one who gets the
talk talk talk what what can I say but
uh what are you gonna do anyway uh yeah
this msec site this these early days
were shocking to me I I was stunned at
that and and this is the thing I was
thinking about with cruise critic why
would cruise critic call this the ship
of the year when no one sailed on it and
you know the first review is coming out
of the ship are gonna be god-awful
compared you know we see more of this
kind of stuff going on and it's a crying
shame I'm sorry to hear it I'm sorry to
notice it I'd still take a chance if MSC
offered me a cruise you know for my wife
and I because I'd love to do live
YouTube reports from the deck of the MSC
seaside no problem at all but you know
just don't put me in an ocean view room
where I can hear the banging from
downstairs I'd like to go upstairs up
like good so we got here the Matt says I
think they don't want you to write
essays Elizabeth says no apologies mark
marks there's no one else but the
Steelers are right on mark sorry about
this whole thing
Austin Austin tried to get a message in
but he got he's been redacted Elizabeth
we are looking at the Cardinal horizon
in December of 2019 thoughts or stay
with the breeze hmm interesting thoughts
or stay with the breeze I got some news
for you about the breeze this was my
next little
article I'm gonna talk about the loose
news report I heard today and I was
shocked when I saw this one the Carnival
Cruise Line failed two more inspections
with the CDC and the two cruise ships
that failed the inspections Carnival
Vista and Carnival Breeze holy cow
and you'd think that they figured it out
because month ago they failed the
inspection with the Carnival Triumph
back / New Orleans the Carnival Triumph
for those of you who remember was known
as the poop cruise when they had a fire
in the engine room back in 2013 and they
were without power and dead in the water
for five or six days at sea and the
toilets didn't work and air-conditioning
didn't work no power no nothing and the
food all went bad of course and the
aircraft carrier in the area of the US
Navy sent over they helicoptered
supplies on to the deck of the of the
triumph for sandwiches and bottles of
water for the passengers and then
eventually they got a tow I mean a mega
mega tow tug came to bring it back into
port and those passengers were just so
happy to see the USA again it was
unbelievable Matt the horizon looks like
a must especially if you have kids and
Theresa says not a Carnival Cruise fan
anyway here's here's the shocking part
about this story that I found out today
about this the failing of these two
cruise ships for the CDC inspection it
was reported that there were dozens of
violations on both ships not just a
couple of problems and that the
inspectors had uncovered the crew had
tried to hide problems from them going
so far as to take a number of trolleys
of food spoiled food broken dishes all
kinds of violations things that would be
violence they tried to hide these items
in the crew quarters and they got caught
they got found out and this is this is a
disaster just that this is gonna be a
disaster
mark the lost traveller is here I've
been on 20 cruises and I've never been
on the Carnival ship mark welcome to the
channel that's I need to go to your
first time welcome here tell me tell us
where you're from
welcome to the crowd Elizabeth says I do
have kids and I only been on Carnival
honestly never have been disappointed
and you know I'm glad to hear that of
course I tell you Elizabeth this was
something dozens of violations they were
even finding issues with documentation
regarding how many passengers were
getting sick on the cruises they were
hiding the true number from these
inspectors even stuff like doctors
reports and all that should be made
available all of it this is these
inspections are like from top to bottom
and they have had a number of violations
here so I'm surprised this hasn't hint
bigger news outlets yet this is this I
just caught this this morning mark is
saying going an NCL gateway down the 25
way to go that's gonna be a great cruise
I'm sure gaily whoops I'm on the Vista
in the 27th am I gonna live well I could
tell you
gaily by the time you get on the Vista
it'll be spotless because I bet you
right now both ships are being cleaned
up the bottom and I don't think there'll
be an issue because carnivals gonna want
to fix this but well you thought I
thought they learned their lessons when
they failed with the triumph the triumph
failed the CDC thing in New Orleans like
three months ago and then they requested
a redo and they got a 98% score out of
100 I don't know Carnival is definitely
for families wouldn't go as a couple but
Royal Caribbean is amazing too matt says
mark is saying it seems you hear more
catastrophes on Carnival in any other
cruise line do you agree or just my
imagination
I've heard people getting sick on Royal
Caribbean in Australia about three weeks
ago you know this comes up from time to
time this norovirus thing but these
inspection problems are a shock to me
crash sake so the problem is the ships
are registered in third-world countries
so they don't have to obey many laws
including human rights and employment
laws well crash you're right except for
one thing if you bring a cruise ship
into US territorial waters you are
subject to surprise CDC inspections
twice a year every six months mandatory
they all know this so you can register
it any way you want but if you want to
apply the waters of the US and continue
to be able to do so you have to pass
these tests
and so a carnival cannot afford to have
any more of these these debacles because
they'll eventually get banned I mean
it'll just they'll just won't allow
certain ships in US waters and it could
go you know cruise line wide like it
could be a problem so this this is we
kind of chuckle about it but it's
serious stuff I don't know Elizabeth
said it's certainly good info have you
ever thought of being a travel agent I
am my own travel agent thank you
I kind of do my own thing Matt's saying
believe it or not we found the best kids
program is on Celebrity very neat
Elizabeth saying mark I'm in Orlando
also yeah this this this inspection
thing is is a big potential problem that
that carnivals gonna have to deal with
the the PR followed the PR followed
alone is gonna cost them millions I mean
if they lose two or three thousand
bookings over the next six months where
people decide that I'm gonna go
somewhere else you add up the numbers
that is serious bucks let's see here
crashes but they are usually aware of
these when missus or inspectors take
place there they're aware that they
could have an inspection but they don't
no one's coming they usually do not know
and obviously Carnival they couldn't
have known I mean if they knew that
there were inspectors gonna be waiting
at the pier when they returned to you
know whatever report they were coming to
you can imagine that for 24 hours before
the ship got into port the crew and the
supervisors for all the members of the
group would have been all over that ship
to make sure they had no issues this is
this is serious serious you know
miscalculation is not good
Theresa says failing a sailing in
February on Royal Caribbean and and cl2
and mark is saying what's nice about
living in Orlando is I'm an hour's drive
from the port you've got it work you're
you're at Cape Canaveral just over here
and if you got a deal in in Fort
Lauderdale head to Fort Lauderdale
yeah man when you're in Florida you got
it going on for if a first for variety
my god you've got it going on
you also have Tampa
Austin is is here going on a Carnival
Cruise in April to the Caribbean way to
go Austin Elizabeth I totally agree mark
I'm also hairdressers you never know
when they're coming they don't tell you
the inspector comes the inspector comes
and surprise here we are no warning
Theresa Theresa says lucky you you can
get the best deals mark since you don't
have to fly yeah you can drive to the
port mark you got it made you get to
drive to your port art park your vehicle
nearby if you can park in a hotel for us
for you know virtually nothing or a
nominal fee or at the pier itself man
you don't have to worry about the weight
of the bags you can you know bring along
you order your wine or drinks or
whatever snacks on inside your luggage
already oh it's fantastic those of us
who have to fly in we got to get in the
day before just to make sure we don't
have any screw-ups on our connections
and then we should be going to a Costco
or a Walmart or a big grocery store to
pick up our provisions to take on board
and save a few bucks right Krajcik says
last year I was on reflection and the
ship just returned from Europe and they
were putting guests on busses taking
them to the malls to hang out because
they weren't going to be cleared until
they clear cleaned the ship top to
bottom wow that's that's surprising
that's really something
yeah mark is saying about how convenient
is for him to get on cruises in Florida
at Miami Tampa even Jacksonville
Elizabeth says mark when we go out of
Port Canaveral we do the radisson Park
and shuttle it's awesome
mark is saying true true yeah you know
when when you live in Florida or you're
already in Florida you say you're you
know you were in Orlando for three or
four days a week and then you're taking
a cruise wow it's so relaxing to get to
the cruise ship that you get that whole
day to get there even if you're in a
rental car you gonna drop the thing off
taking a shuttle bus from your hotel to
the to the cruise ship say in Fort
Lauderdale or Miami you can't you can't
beat that the feeling of the feeling of
ease just overtakes you but if you're
flying in the day that the cruise is
taking off
when coming from Canada like I would be
I'm telling you you can't get a direct
flight generally speaking not always so
you're using a connection you just
praying that there aren't problems
between here and there and the two
planes you're gonna get on you know
mechanically wise you just hope and you
don't get bumped or get delayed or miss
your connection or you know the distress
is terrible but if you get it you can
get to the cruise port the day before
you will avoid those issues and you can
just say alright this is you know this
is gonna work for me okay let's see what
else we got here
mark is saying - true mark Lester I've
done that shuttle parking yeah exactly
so that was the story on the carnem I
just finished there about the CDC
violations unbelievable
looking a crash is saying looking for a
good hotel in Florida Airport Fort
Lauderdale true shuttles available you
may give me and Jim I'm not aware of
yeah that Radisson Park sounds like a
good one crash I had a feeling that one
of my viewers would give you the answer
to that
Norwegian is making some adjustments
they're shuffling their their ships
around a little bit and they announced
just a couple years ago going forward
for not 2019 and 2020 certain ships are
gonna be in certain ports and I found
what what I found interesting was the
size of these vessels and where they're
headed for example the brand new ship
that's coming from Norwegians called the
Bliss it'll be coming out on in April of
this year so another three months from
now well after I have a thousand
subscribers by the way folks those of
you are just watching me today if you're
enjoying this consider subscribing I
need a thousand subscribers in 30 days
you can click here or click here I'd
really appreciate it give me a thumbs up
if you're watching I was just a little
plug for those of you who've been with
me the whole time the Bliss is coming on
stream on April it's going to be based
out of Seattle first of all for the
summer season it's going to do Alaska
and then the Bliss is headed to New York
and it's gonna work out of New York City
for the Caribbean forum from about
November forward and that's 4,000 on
passengers the gate the getaway which
right now has been working out of New
York for the Caribbean that's the one
that was caught in the
what was that called again the cyclone
the bomb cyclone the storm that happened
about two weeks of the winter storm the
getaway was in that one it's going to be
moving to new audience it's gonna be its
homeport and that's a 4,000 passenger
ship out of New Orleans that is a sign
of how popular New Orleans is becoming
as a port city big news for New Orleans
it's gonna create a lot of jobs
wonderful to hear I'm just checking my
messages here mark I work for American
Airlines bags sometimes they'll make the
flight mark you're right there Theresa
saying going on the bliss next February
and the new Royal Caribbean symphony of
the Seas just got news for the symphony
you're reading my mind this is great
stuff so the getaway going to New
Orleans gonna make that its home port
4,000 passengers a cruise obviously
Caribbean will be its area the epic I've
been on the epic it's going to call San
Juan Puerto Rico its home base starting
in 2019 I am crossing my fingers for the
people for people of Puerto Rico in
general in particular for the folks said
one but for all the passengers and
tourists that are coming in and out of
San Juan and want to be coming in on set
1 I am praying that everything gets
looked after let's see
Elizabeth's saying I'd like to touch out
touch on the carnival carnival faster to
the fun it's worth it Bruce oh yes I'll
talk to about that I'll talk about that
a second Marc is saying fort long it is
so close to Port Everglades it's
convenient to buy booze et cetera playa
taxis personally I like it
on the other hand sailed of Galveston
once too far from the ride from the
airport
yeah Galvez never took off as a port
city it's still I think being used a
little bit but not big-time but epic
coming out of San Juan Puerto Rico this
I hope it works out because if 4,000
passengers come on the epic and get off
the epic every week the number of jobs
created for San Juan will be great for
Puerto Rico as a whole you know for all
the suppliers that supply the ship with
all of its you know goods and stuff jeez
I'm hoping that works out but you know
even today you want to fly in out of San
Juan Puerto Rico
it's not easy because the flights still
haven't come back to Priora K and levels
so there's a lot of work to meet the
beans to be done there
the breakaway another four thousand
passenger NCL ship is gonna work out of
Port Canaveral and then the escape 4,200
passengers is going to be based out of
my Annie so each one of these ships
there's what five five five four
thousand passions or ships are all going
to be set up in such a way that all to
be doing the Caribbean sailing area for
the winter of 2019 20 so 20,000
passengers a week think about that
that's huge you imagine the amount of
work that that NCL has to do to to to
make it work excuse me hmm
gaily wants to know if there's a train
from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Miami
Airport yes I think there is there was
one created and built out not too long
ago I'm pretty sure it's open but I will
admit I took a shuttle bus from them
from the epic cruise ship that came back
to the Port of Miami to Fort Lauderdale
where I was flying out and I just ended
on a shuttle bus but I believe the train
system there's a new rail system has
been being built in southern Florida and
I believe it's open you may need to look
that up on Google or or even look for a
YouTube video on that a crash saying I
have done faster to the fun was worth
the $50 so you can book 120 days out and
it goes quick so be ready yeah faster
the fun is that is a sort of a Guest
Pass it might be a band that you get on
your wrist I'm not sure how they offered
to you and it gives you a priority
check-in on embark Asian day and on
depart take the bar occasion day it
gives you faster access earlier access
to tenders and to a number of events you
get a you get an exclusive line to guest
services cut like a first you know first
class passenger in an airport you have
that first class line that nobody uses
and then everyone else is over here so
that kind of thing it's it's it seems to
be popular and and people have been been
picking it up
I don't know how to comment on that I
know you know Carnival is known for
value when it comes to cruising we all
know that there they're not an expensive
cruise line and so they're adding these
little add-ons to kind of those want to
pay more get a little more this is one
of those features I think Matt is saying
that there isn't a train but check
cruise transfers I would definitely do
that there are a number of cruise
transfers available the cruise lines
themselves will offer transfers from
airport to ship you know between Fort
Lauderdale's Airport and the ship as
well good news is that the airport isn't
very far away from the terminal
buildings it's very close by so even a
cab ride wouldn't cost you too much
Marcus is confirming no train Theresa
it's $831 a person with onboard credit
125 bucks for the symphony I got some
news on the symphony just a second
Theresa matt says that's a great deal we
looked at and it was going and what 2500
person for balcony so definitely we're
going Elizabeth is now saying it is
under it's under excursions and it sells
out quickly but I believe it's worth it
we always do it this is that fast pass
with Carnival angela is saying up will
you be taking any cruise assume that
you'll be doing a video I'll get back to
you on that Theresa I booked it just
when it came out to came out the book
for the symphony of the Seas get that
early galleys thanks Matt Bruce thanks
Gail if you're heading out thank you so
much Lori a bruise from Moncton New
Brunswick snowstorm here again Laurie
know you're in Creston it's zero Celsius
it's cloudy we had a little dusting of
snow but it stopped gray looking at so I
got these lights on and I'm shiny here
at night it's awful welcome to the
channel welcome to the discussion mark
you should book a cruise for late this
year and we'll have all have a chance to
go cruising with Bruce their Caribbean
life I'll get back to you on that I got
to get a thousand subscribers first okay
if folks haven't heard YouTube has
changed the rules I have to have a total
of a thousand subscribers in 30 days
from now or I'm a dead man on
monetization and I don't want to have
that happen and so I'm scrambling like
crazy to get my subscriber count up
it'll be a great idea to have a cruise
I'll let you know when we do a meet-up
when I plan a Meetup I'll give you guys
plenty plenty of notice months and
months and months of it and we'll figure
something up but let me let me get to
them first of all I have some news on
Royal Caribbean a symphony of the Seas
starting today tomorrow sea trials
they're putting her out for seals for
sea trials so she's getting close she's
uh the hall is obviously all built out
the engines are all in everything is
done they're mechanically are obviously
working on the last of it and the
cosmetics of course on the inside but
she's going out for sea trials now so
things are happening with the symphony
of the Seas exciting times for for those
of you who are booked on the symphony of
the Seas way to go I expect a full
report let's see what mark saying you
should yeah okay look okay I just double
checking my messages case I haven't
missed anybody yeah so there's the the
sea trials coming from the symphony of
Seas
now what's gonna happen in the first two
months on the symphony of the Seas are
we gonna have issues like we were having
on the msec side Laura you've just
joined us we were talking about the MSC
seaside the first cruiser to all kinds
of mechanical issues leakage of water
sewage backups noises upset people not
good times so I'm not sure what's going
on if you show travel then you will get
more subscribers yes if I take you with
me
you know on a ship and you follow me
like a like a log then I'll have that
kind of a show yes I do admit that I
follow a number of our viewers on
YouTube I have a couple that I like very
much and I find it interesting but I
also find it after a while kind of
repetitive driving to a new location got
a got a new campground putting on a fire
here we go
we're here I'm able to interact with my
live viewers and I'm trying to become
more of a discussion place or cruising
and if I can make it daily and make it
work I think this is this is a winning
formula but I definitely would like to
do some cruising I will do cruising and
I will do reports from cruise ships of
course
can do meetups even better but if I
could find a way than to do discussions
on the ship during the troops that will
be the homerun ball and I'm really
working on all of this in my master plan
Bobby costs twenty four year new I don't
know if I've ever seen you here before
welcome to the channel tell us where
you're from
he Bobby's saying so I'm booked on the
msec side in August very nervous at this
point all I write is bad reviews any
insight Bobby I'm certain by August it
won't be as bad as what you've heard do
not panic but generally speaking the
first month or two for a new cruise can
be rough with issues and mechanical
issues and Emma C has had its issues
it's a new design though for the ship so
a lot of things are new and never been
done before I'm sure they're working the
kinks they can't afford to have this
continue much longer trust me they will
resolve it Chevy and first is here
welcome back hi Bruce I have a question
how long does it take to get off the
ship get your luggage on demarcation day
my friend is trying to book her return
flight okay if you need to get off the
ship like really early like as soon as
you know like let's say gets them to the
pier at seven eight o'clock customs is
open you know that you can get off at
say 8:00 you'll be you'll be able to get
one you'll be able to get off first like
you can notify the ship literally before
you even get on the ship but certainly
the the two or three days before the
cruise is over they usually send a form
to every passenger you fill out the the
paper when do you need to disembark you
can take the luggage with you you don't
even have to leave the luggage in the
hallway you can take all your luggage
with you as if you're walking through a
terminal of an airport and you just slip
your way down the hallway to the
elevator go down to the deck that they
assign it so you go to probably get for
that deck five whatever it is the
deportation the park a shin deck
whatever how I say that although when
you're back in like Miami or in Los
Angeles you might get off on deck ten
because they have the high the high
ramps that they just bring right up to
the ship anyway wherever did that's how
you were to get the you know get off to
get off the ship from but you'll be able
to get off right off the first thirty
minutes and then off you go with all
your luggage you have to wait for it to
come off the ship
gone the the thing about packing up your
luggage and leaving it in the hallway
the night before is if you're say you're
staying a day a whole day at the the
port city that you've landed at or your
flight isn't until you know 4:00 in the
afternoon then you leave your baggage
out in the hall you'll get off the ship
at ten eleven they'll tell you what time
that you should be at a certain dining
room to gather up and then be escorted
off and when you do get escorted off and
you get through customs and you're back
in the terminal your bags will be
waiting for you because they wouldn't
have let you off the ship unless the
bags are already there that's part of
their thing that's supposed to be how
it's supposed to work just you know
sometimes it doesn't but that's how it's
supposed to work so that's the deal on
that one okay Theresa says sailed on
harmony I love the changes they did on
that ship love the new wristband instead
of sign and sail card that this is a new
thing and I think it's a good idea you
just being put it up to a monitor lets
you through you're on your way a map
saying or Royal Caribbean having to have
it down they usually put the ship
through rigorous testing and take the
best staff from all their ships for the
new ship and can you imagine yeah if
you're a veteran of Royal Caribbean
there are people probably fighting to
get on that new ship exciting times you
know all new features change of
itinerary yeah I can imagine that Royal
Caribbean will take their best staff and
they'll really go after bless these
large mega ships that this is what the
fifth version of this fifth big class of
ships so I'm sure you know they've got a
lot of the kinks figured out with MSC
new design new design new style new
architecture obviously all the mechanics
are new they didn't build a cookie
cutter four thousand passenger ship at
all I mean we look at these pictures
these these enhanced photos from those
from the computer graphics phenomenal
the ship is beautiful but now there's
the logistics part making it work as
well right
Chevy first week we got snow last night
in Georgia four inches disaster in
Georgia this is catastrophic you guys
aren't going anywhere oh my god that's
terrible crash experiment Caroline
follow her everyday pretty much the same
Carolyn Caroline's one of my favorites
I love Caravan Caroline uh she's a
youtuber she's in the band and she's 62
I'm 62 and she's been going at it for
about a year and a half now or so
overall and as a youtuber she's just
done beautifully doing a great job and
she does all of her videos on smartphone
and they're shaky and everything else
it's it's really low-quality but but the
story is compelling because you're
following her exploits Matt I've heard
that it's gotten much better from Europe
to the US
okay Matt are you talking about Chris
ships guy I'm thinking with
repositioning cruises yes but from
airfare yes big time got much better for
a year from your video so I'm not sure
what you mean by that
shaving first you can take your own
luggage off the ship and they start that
very early morning you just walked off
customs and smooth usually we always
walk off with our own luggage as I was
saying MSc seaside crash access just
needs to stretch its legs but then the
cruise reviews will get better yeah
exactly in crash you're right after a
little while they'll be fine a nathan
saying have you been on a Disney cruise
no have not been on a Disney cruise
personally but I hear good things high
grades they're ranked there's a
five-star line but they're pricey
they're not they're not a you're not
gonna get a five-star line for a
four-star price Disney is a little more
money but then you get you know a little
different
Karen lip chin is here Karen welcome to
my my chat it's wonderful to have you
here you're a first-timer
I'm gonna guess you're from Calgary
Alberta Canada because I know his and
I'm loving it she's saying I agreed
Galveston is a hard work to get to San
Diego is one of the best darn right
Karen you take that hall in America
cruise out of San Diego and head down to
the Mexican Riviera good times had by
all and it's fantastic oh I'm so glad
you're here it's fantastic Bobby Bobby K
Kos is saying yeah get it I'm with the
Yacht Club so that is certainly
promising the design of the ship is what
sold me the open deck space and the
Yacht Club seemed amazing what Bobby's
talking about with the Yacht Club
does the MSC sea side has its own higher
classification of rooms just like
Norwegian has the Haven with their spa
suites the the MSC seaside has its Yacht
Club and all MSE ships at the Yacht Club
and it's certainly got you interested
would have me interested quite curious
to see how that comes off that should be
nice Theresa is saying we always do
walk-off as well it's so much easier
what's all over luggage Angela be
careful I would not book my flight
before noon Angela too many things can
happen exactly if you're leaving you're
leaving Fort Lauderdale you got to go to
New York or you got to go to Seattle or
you got to go to London England you
don't want to leave the same day you
stay one night in the hotel in Fort
Lauderdale or Miami or just go to Miami
spend a night there or better yet head
to Orlando spend two or three nights and
Disneyworld men go home but the same day
before noon on a flight with the to our
mandatory free chicken now sometimes
three hours you got you got issues there
you may have too much you know too much
going on we wouldn't want to miss your
flight trying to get home Laurie saying
you could get delayed getting to the
port in you're screwed
mark is saying I can attest to the true
being better on the new ship I sailed on
regal princess when the ship was a
couple months old versus two years later
big difference very interesting Matt I
was taking msec side always talking
taking msec side Europe to the US Oh
I'm assuming you took that cruise yeah
how was that I hope that was okay mark
the lost traveler correction looks like
the rail goes miami-fort Lauderdale look
at the website tri-rail t.ri - rail yeah
I I heard about this this rail line
being built and I thought by now we'll
be up and running and the whole thing
was you know Miami to Fort Lauderdale
and back making it a lot easier you
don't already want getting on a bus or
getting in a car but backups on the
highways the toll roads all this sort of
stuff if that's up and running in it's
and it's running the way it's supposed
to be it's sort of connected to sort of
bus to the train train to a bus to get
to your final destination
so look into that and that's a big move
for Florida
let's see her Bobbie is saying how is
the food on MSC supposed to be compared
to royal celebrity Norwegian etc I don't
know this is something I haven't got the
word on yet I'm I'm dying to find out
the video I saw for those Canadians who
were on that sort of inaugural cruise
they weren't happy they were they were
not happy campers with a number of
issues including the fact that the
buffet only half of it was running the
other half was shut down
no they claimed was the story was not
enough staff and yet the ship was
supposed to be sold out on this cruise
and and these folks didn't think it was
sold out and there were anomalies there
that I am confused about so I'm not sure
quite what the deal is with that Marcus
a market lost traveler I've done Disney
I've done Disney big bucks but
everything first-class one thing they
take lots of pictures that will break
the bank yes yes and with all those
Disney characters man how can you not
have these photos taken other kids think
of the kids the children think of the
children
yeah but think of your bank account too
but it is well-run and so if you're
going I don't think you need to be
disappointed with the service on Disney
at all Theresa is saying one of she said
she wants to try a Disney cruise I went
on the Divina last year the food was
really good that's an MSc ship that's
good to hear Theresa a crash is saying
you want to know about food ask my
sister Theresa she's she's in there mark
los trans traveler Theresa bring money
bring money
Angela's saying if you want great food
you have to do princess you know it it I
was gonna ask you folks about this topic
if I didn't have enough to talk about
today and I am enough to talk about with
these new rules with YouTube I have
enough to talk about but anyway I was
gonna ask you folks what do you think
about cruise food over the last five or
ten years you think it's changed is it
better is it worse I know one thing
that's changed especially restaurants
have exploded everywhere you know it
used to be there were two or three
specialty restaurants now 1517 how many
are more gonna come
and most of them are extra they're extra
is the food any better than it used to
be when it was all inclusive you know
I'm saying let's see here our kids are
grown so I would say in the ad I'll stay
in the adult area exactly Teresa mark
the lost traveler I've done princess the
food was great the good reaction there
what and and everyone else I did a
Princess cruise last year to the Mexican
Riviera done a couple now
and I found a noticeable difference in
the quality of the food and it was for
me it was lower I was not as impressed
as before but I think the other thing
that kind of got to me was I went to the
steakhouse on both cruises and the
second time which was this last year I
think it ran my wife and I and it was he
$40 each additional and I found the
portions to be lacking and like an
example would be prawns
I ordered a prawn appetizer and I got
three just three bronze on this big dish
that used to hold six they put three I
was disappointed I didn't bother saying
can I have another one because I didn't
know if I could or not but I was
disappointed by that and then came the
meal and the steak looked kind of small
and I looked at my wife my wife looked
at me and we went well that the quality
was okay you know
steak baked potato broccoli well um but
I kind of thought to myself you know
back home where I come from I can go to
Nick's steakhouse in Calgary when I'm in
town and it's about as much money and
it's better it's just I just get more
and I'll leave that restaurant stuffed
so I was I was disappointed by that but
anyway the the princess cruises and I'm
wondering about other cruise lines are
they cutting back on the quality of food
are they making the buffet more like a
home food in kind of thing and they're
the main dining room now is that
becoming more of a what kind of what
kind of level of food would I call that
it would be higher than he's obviously
but but it used to be the main dining
room in a cruise ship used to be where
you got the best stuff and you could ask
for an extra portion no problem at all
there'll be no charge to you
but now with all these specialty
restaurants the cruise ships they don't
really want you buying the food that
costs you nothing or getting the food
that costs you nothing they want you in
the specially restaurants paying extra
but what I'm thinking is if you go the
Italian restaurant spend 15 20 bucks a
head more you go to the Japanese version
and spend 10 20 30 bucks more noticing
too that the prices for these specialty
restaurants is rising uh I'm kind of
asking no didn't the food used to be
this good all the time anyway I'm
wondering about that now did they have
sushi 15 years ago no did they have
fresh baked pizza on demand 15 20 years
ago
not necessarily yes they had lobster
tail night and they had a surf and turf
night and they had the prime rib
available and you know they they had
they have the good stuff but not anymore
in the main dining room now you don't
get prime rib every night
you don't get surf and turf every night
you'll be lucky to get a lobster tail
one day out of a seven-day cruise and
maybe not even that anymore I'm
wondering if that the standards are
being dropped on these restaurants where
you don't have to pay extra in order for
you to go to the specialty restaurants
and pay extra and yet you're not getting
anything better than you used to get
when it used to be the you know used to
be the norm I'm wondering about that
love to get your thoughts on that
let's see Disney with your eagle
princess fruit okay Paula says regal
princess food was good the desserts are
always delish Theresa is saying I've
done princess seven years ago didn't
like the food so never did another
cruise with them again keep in mind
princess is owned by Carnival same
mother corporation so maybe there's
things infiltrating I don't know in
other words I'm thinking about
princesses offering you know a really
competitive price for a cruise but it's
coming from somewhere else is that
coming from the food area or are certain
ships just still better than others I I
I don't I don't know what to make of
that Theresa saying maybe it's changed
mark says the smaller ships have better
food than the large ones I think you're
right I think you got a point there
let's see here Angela says you have the
Regal and the Royal have the regal and
the royal princess a crash saying best
steakhouse on carnival six inch high
cheesecake add my hubby on cloud nine I
love the food but not a fan of Carnival
otherwise right on Theresa saying NCL
the bigger ships I think have the best
food
now that's an opposite thought there
versus a bigger ship scholarship Angela
Royal Caribbean had terrible food on
brilliance okay
Angela except for the Steakhouse she
says except for the thing yeah excu see
you pay the extra money and you get the
kind of food they used to give you know
in the dining room when you didn't have
especially restaurants is that is that's
what is that what's going on is the
question I'm wondering
Bobbi is saying I'm certainly doing a
few nights especially dining and more
than likely the Yacht Club restaurant on
the other nights so main dining the main
dining is more breakfast and lunch for
me yeah you betcha Bobby you've paid the
price to get into that upper level eat
there and eat there and then especially
absolutely mark to me the foods are
compared on comparable some dishes and
desserts better on each comparing
carnival to Prince's I'm I am oh I'm
sure that means by my best overall was
first cruise on real princess went new
ship yeah
and Mark the lost traveler says I've
been to an NIC steakhouse I have a
friend that went to university there
great restaurant I once said to the way
out crash is saying I once went to a
central waiter on carnival bread pudding
was so good I could eat this every day I
was on a B to be on the glory he brought
it every day to the point I had to just
walk you have to be right
I was my first ever Cruise was a Mexican
care Mexican Mexican cruise Riviera
Mexican Riviera cruise on Oh in America
the oyster dam five stars and my friends
and I went on this cruise went into the
dining room had the same table every
night didn't do specialty dining we had
the same waiters every night and my
buddy and I the two
we wanted prawns as an appetizer on that
first night and I said to my buddy he
said behind how are they I said they're
delicious they're fantastic Jesus would
you like this every night at all this
would be great
next time the waiter comes by he says to
the waiter is it possible that we could
have this appetizer every night of the
cruise between now and the last day of
the cruise the waiter said the end no
problem and the next night we get there
I'm looking at the menu for what the
choices are I don't see the prawns as a
menu item there's no there's no offer of
prawns and I'm looking at my buddy going
are we gonna get the prosthesis and sure
enough the waiter comes to take our
order and the wives are making their
appetizer order and the waiter looks at
my buddy and Isis you ready for your
prawns yes we are we said every night we
had our prawns I think we got five or
six big prawns every night on the cruise
whether was on the menu or not the good
old days I don't know if they'll still
do that that's kind of what I'm
wondering wondering about trying to
catch up keep up on my notes here bread
pudding is a good comment
Tara's that says I'm a big foodie so I
rate my ships on certain entertainment
you darn right we all do Theresa
absolutely karen is saying did NCL Jade
last made England love the ship and
entertainment but fantast
was ship and entertain was fantastic the
food was of a lower quality yeah this is
what I wonder and on a repositioning
cruise are they cutting back to is that
kind of what's going on I'm not sure mat
Norwegian have bad have bad food in
normal restaurants but their specialty
is better than anything else
usually Norwegian offers an offer on the
cabin and I would have always chose the
specialty dining deal yeah there you go
I think that's what's going on Theresa
is saying the smaller NCL ships food
aren't as good so I stick with the
bigger ships more choices mark is saying
I am in my opinion thanks mark thanks
for helping me out these terms you know
like what is it fantastic thanks mark
in my opinion karen says jade a
steakhouse was a la carte and a meal
would be in excess of 50 bucks each
I don't think it's worth it I don't
think 50 I think 50 is too much they
have paid for the cruise I paid for the
port charges I'm paying for the tips
fifty sixty seventy dollars for somebody
especially restaurant I think we're
starting to push the envelope on that
one that's just that's just a IMO that's
just in my opinion mark is saying a
great app I use it I use it it's called
shipmate gives you ton of info just as
good as the ship you're going on app
I've heard about this app shipmate I'm
gonna be checking in Avella bit more a
crash tag says bread pudding for two
weeks is a bit crazy even even after we
have we have said no more it is no
longer on my it's no longer on my fav
list they killed you they killed you on
the bread pudding I'm sorry to hear that
Theresa saying celebrity has done that
for us in regards to food if you like
something you can get it again that's
good to know and and crash 3x si you
ship me yeah you know some of these some
of these are really great yeah on their
own they only a food thing you know I
was under a Royal Caribbean Explorer of
the Seas and they had onboard the Johnny
Rockets burger joint where you get out
you can get a burger fries milkshake or
a coke onion rings the stuff and I think
the charge was $10 each and I'm kind of
going well if I go to a Johnny Rockets
isn't it isn't it like ten bucks each on
a Chilean Rockets anyway I don't know
why I'm why am I getting on a cruise
which is a once in a while thing you
know maybe maybe one cruise every two
years fighters for some people once in a
lifetime thing you know once every ten
years thing why would you get on a
cruise ship and be surrounded by all
these especially restaurants and the
regular restaurants where you can eat
for free and eat and eat a burger and
fries at Johnny Rockets and pay for it I
don't I don't get it I I don't think the
burgers are a primary burgers you know
but it's a gimmick and it's a it's a
stick and they have the singing and the
dancing and so it's a bit of a show but
the night my wife and I went on the
cruise we were the only people in the
restaurant they could hold probably a
hundred fifty there were two of us there
so I don't know
it's just me what can I say Angela I
also you shipmate Teresa crashes saying
Teresa and I love the butter selection
on equinox I'm curious about that the
butter selection Gailey says my first
and only cruise was on the Norwegian
Cruise Line J 2016 I found the food to
not to be so good but I agree that Jade
was great
I've been on the Jade myself I took a
cruise from Southampton to the
Mediterranean ended in Barcelona was 11
the cruise I believe loved the cruise
loved the ship loved the spa area l
McCain really loved it
I found the food to be okay I found the
Italian restaurant to be just great went
there a couple of times did the
steakhouse once great but you know it
was shifting then I could already tell
the shift is on towards especially
restaurants this is o 8 2008 doesn't
know it 10 years ago
let's see here oh and Theresa saying oh
yeah so good
something with the butter Matt I think
princess is the most accommodating in
terms of main dining interesting uh you
know you know I can't I can't think put
my finger on the last Princess cruise I
did but the main dining room just jumped
out at me there was there's nothing
there that went oh this is awesome I
think I did buffet more than the main
dining room on that cruise maybe it's
just me maybe it was lame it was the
mood I was in I don't know Martin wants
to know what kind of cabin do you guys
get I get an insight because I'm never
in there and I use my money for scuba
diving you know it's a personal choice
kind of thing I've had inside rooms I've
had balcony rows inside rooms are okay
but I love balcony rooms I'm the kind of
guy that loves watching the waves
I'd love I might but like when I'm in
the balcony room I'm on the balcony
looking out it at the water at the ocean
is especially on sea days I love walking
around the ship on sea days I've paid
for this cruise I want to be on the
water I want to see the water go by I
want to see the waves crashing on the
side of the ship I think watching that
white foam
school by the ship as we go through the
water that's my that's a big deal for me
it's a big deal for me I I you know
think about just I just unwind and it's
therapeutic and it's great when I'm on a
balcony I can just look over and watch
and in the evening when it's pitch-black
out the stars are out great if the moon
is out great
but I can hear that water going by and
the lights of the ship of course are on
the ship itself right where the water
meet just meets the hull and so you can
watch you can still see the water and
the waves within about the first 15 feet
go by and I just find that so relaxing I
love it but when I'm in an inside room I
use the ship as my living room and I
just used the inside room as a bedroom
to go sleep and I agree with you
regarding the dollars you can save so
much money on inside to to enjoy the
rest of the ship or the rest of our
holiday above and beyond that or you can
just get on a longer bigger cruise for
the kind of money that a shorter cruise
would cost to at a balcony room so it's
a good strategy you're not a loser
either way really so it's gonna catch up
here with comments Theresa saying every
night on the equinox you get three
different butter or spreads for your
bread that that's that's gotta be
delicious
mark is saying I'm fine with the
interior cabin but sometimes women
complain so I got a pucker up for the
balcony my wife likes the balcony to
game over there you have it
Theresa says unless I get upgraded we do
an inside I figured I'm not in there
anyway so why pay for it yet mark laughs
Oh blood yeah you bet crash is saying we
usually book across years class balcony
on celebrity but this November we are
doing a sky suite for analemma night
Panama cruise and I envy you for that
way to go enjoy it it should be
fantastic I mean I booked my last cruise
the Masters I did was on the epic and I
booked a spa balcony room now that
didn't get me into the Haven the upper
level it was just one level or so below
but it was significant dollars below
um the the regular balcony versus the
balcony room I booked the difference
came to about a hundred and twenty five
dollars for the entire cruise and for
that I got a spa pass to go into the is
it the Mandarin spa on NC L I remember
who runs which version anyway on NC L
the spa on the epic was fantastic it's
at the back of the ship
it's the largest spa I've ever been in
it had a it had a big whirlpool that
probably could hold 20 people 25 people
with a number of secluded areas enclaves
and these big waterfalls these water
jets coming down for about six feet up
you can get underneath it let it hit the
top of your shoulder blades oh that was
so good
that's warm hot water just hitting the
top of your shoulders you're just you
then you let it hit the back and this
small in your bag and then your hip when
you kids get to be my age you'll know
what I'm talking about how great this is
anyway the rest of the spa was fantastic
because they have course their men's
area in the women's area but then out in
the common area of the the sois went
right out to the back of the ship and
there was a balcony back there that you
could go out and when they had loungers
on the very back of the ship gotta be 15
stories up and you can watch the water
pass you know go back watch the watch
the propeller leave all of its bubbles
behind I love that that spa was great
and for that $125 extra that was a great
deal I really really enjoyed that one a
gala is saying I managed to get an
upgrade from inside to mini suite on the
Jade for 80 pounds a mirror on the sale
date got the same last week for the
Vista nice going that is this this is
great Kaylee did you do it through a
travel agent or were you doing it
through the cruise line directly I'd be
curious to know that
mark lost travel a very nice perk
working for the airline is I can pay
$500 less or more than regular passenger
very lucky nice Berg absolutely take
advantage of those I know people in
Calgary that worked for WestJet the
airline up there and they were getting
great perks for airfare and and
all-inclusive resort deals in this kind
of thing fantastic crash is saying
Parisian Gardens on NC L o its name in
the spot go gotcha thanks crash a
Theresa is saying lucky you mark yeah
way to go mark mark saying 7-day on NC L
getaway 399 for an inside
that's a getaway baby 399 bucks
absolutely stay on the inside and enjoy
and yeah if you don't need the balcony
perfect go for it a Theresa saying wow
great deal gaily Royal Caribbean so
through okay so Haley is saying that she
was able to get the upgrades right
through Royal Caribbean RCI very
interesting that's that's pretty good to
know you know when when these days the
days leading up to the sale date is
coming and coming and coming the cruise
ships staff is there they can't like
keep 25 Cruise members back at the port
because we don't need you for this week
they're going with the ship no matter
what now they're gonna have to be
reassigned for work if they don't have
work in their area and in the the upper
you know mini suite area you need more
staff to handle the you know the the
tending of the rooms
you might as like those uterine rooms
being used and the hope is is that
you'll spend more money on other areas
of the ship and other services that they
offer
up there in the higher echelon cabins so
they want those booked out and if they
can get you graduated up they'll do it
and if they can get some money or more
money they'll find a way and rather than
give it away for free more power to em
and to you well done nice smart gaily
saying nice work are you single yes he
says I'm 56 might be old for you though
crashing say I pay more but I get all
the perks premium green
it's free gratuities tons of onboard
credits and wife are for two which keeps
my happy happy yes
the higher your book the more they're
gonna give you darn right and if you can
get that you know higher grade room and
a killer deal yeah now you got a win on
top of a win and there there are deals
out there to be had even in Suites you
know you can always go for the bottom
dollar deal you know look for that
inside room maybe an ocean view room and
get a you know a killer killer price I
love of course to grab a balcony suite
if I can get a balcony room in the you
know for the Caribbean for under 100 a
night base fare
I'm already smiling I mean and now it's
in the 70s $75 range I'm really smiling
I mean this is such a value compared to
you know on shore because I know I can
eat that much food a day let alone the
fare for them for the cruise right gay
leases I'm 63 but willing to have a boy
toy that's it traveling with Bruce is
they come a dating site here we go
meet your match here a traveling with
Bruce tell your friends by the way I
need a thousand subscribers by February
the 20th in case you haven't heard
because YouTube has changed the rules so
you know anyone that wants me on the
dating site you gotta be a subscriber
okay just help me out I gotta get
something out of this this is fantastic
a gala 11th teresa's laughs and Craig's
better deal if the Canadian would get
stronger a year right they're trashed
like an am dollar if we could haven't go
up it would be cheaper for us mark do
you guys buy the drink package I don't
just for the reason I don't drink well
there you go
I don't buy the drink package cuz I
don't drink my wife loves a beer she
loves a cocktail she just buys ala carte
we we find that we do the math and
there's no way she would be able to keep
up with what's required and if you've
got a cruise that's seven days long and
you've got four CD of four days on shore
why would you be on the ship a drinking
when you can be you know enjoying a
couple of beers at the beach say in the
courtyard two if you're in Mexico or you
get off and get off the ship that's a
Cozumel Mexico and you've got bars all
around there and you get beers for two
bucks a beer enjoy you know it
you're not gonna drink on the drink
package get back on the ship and now you
have to drink eight drinks just to make
it pay I don't think my livers going to
agree with me and then my head the next
morning unless you're used to it and if
you're used to it I'm sorry
let's see
mark is saying travel and hook up with
Bruce that's right traveling and hooking
up with Bruce how about that and his
friends new title Therese is saying I
don't buy it I usually just bring on two
bottles of wine for dinner and a case of
soda for my hubby since he doesn't ring
that's what I do I've got two or three
dozen diet caffeine-free right here
caffeine free diet coke again free
commercial for coca-cola I've done this
before I'm available coca-cola company
for promos you just let me know I'm here
for you pardon me I drink caffeine free
otherwise known as brown fuzzy water
okay I'll bring that I'll bring a couple
cases that on board cuz I can't buy the
cans caffeine free diet cans on board
only regular diet coke um but I'm saving
two bucks a can every time I have one of
these so that's what 70 72 bucks I'm
saving on my thirty six cans of Cola my
wife brings a couple of bottles of wine
for room and we love it it's fantastic
it's the Marcus saying I can't drink
enough to cover the drink package at 48
hangovers lasts too long now you got
that right mark mark the lost traveler
says I don't get seasick but has anyone
ever used or heard of see bands on on
your I believe they're on your wrist I
haven't used them myself and I have been
seasick on in a terrible storm but not
on any regular cruise day that I've been
on I've been through 20 foot plus waves
without any issues whatsoever that's
just me personally Theresa is saying she
uses a I used the patch the travel patch
martha lost travel are saying now it's
drinking with bruce martha less
travellerbruce correction Gail yes you
can start charging now Bruce you can
have a percentage when Mark and I go
sailing and Theresa saying tried to see
bands a long time ago didn't work for me
interesting I know that some folks walk
around those they look like band-aids on
the just behind your ears here I'll see
passengers wear those before they even
get on the cruise and have them on all
the time
there are side effects with this stuff
though I think in some cases if you take
some of the pills or use these Paget's
you get dehydrated or there are other
side effects I thought you know I'll
take my chances
whether I get seasick or not if I don't
get seasick I'm not gonna worry about it
I'll deal with it when it happens and if
I need medication I can always get it on
board I can always go to the ship store
and pick up these patches or some other
medication thankfully haven't had to do
it the time that I was stuck on the
Explorer of the season we went through a
winter storm heading from New York to
the Caribbean we were going through
40-foot waves 110 mile an hour gusts 85
consistent mile an hour winds we were
going 25 miles an hour the storm was
going 65 the other way it was bad really
bad everything closed no decks outside
decks are all shut off even on the
inside people are trying to go down the
hallway they were literally both hands
on both walls at the same time was that
bad but anyway I found laying on my on
my left side in bed didn't get motion
sickness laying on my right side Oh felt
terrible but on my left side for some
reason it helped my stomach just keep
calm and digest better not that I had
anything to going on in there I think
everything was just being tossed around
as far as what was in there there was
nothing there but that's just me
everyone is different and what can I say
so I don't know about that I don't know
about the the the band's how they worked
for for you know myself I've no reason
Carol if she says Bruce the only guy we
know who takes an extra suitcase full of
diet caffeine-free Diet Coke
we've traveled with Bruce and he's a
hoot never a dull moment tons of laughs
you know I'm the guy I take the cola and
I save if you really want to get C's if
you really want really really get
seasick Karen saying they give you a
needle at the infirmary it's about 70
bucks and you can go eat escargot
immediately true story well there you
are
experience right there I've always
thought that if I had to you know if I
got that ill I would just go down there
and hopefully get a shot and that might
mitigate it a lot or completely Teresa
is saying a transdermal patch that's
what is what I use I get I used to get
very motion stick and it works for me so
Teresa it works for Teresa transdermal
patch is what it's called
mark is saying Bruce do you play in the
casino any feedback on how loose the
machines are under is cruise lines
tighter or looser tight as a drum you
will lose money guaranteed they're gone
awful payouts the you will not win money
playing on the slot machines guaranteed
I would recommend if you need you want
to kill some time in a casino go on a
sea day during the day enter a slot
tournament it might be ten or twenty
bucks there might be 30 40 50 people in
the tournament and they have prizes for
the top five finishers you know and you
get several rounds of qualifying great
way to kill a couple hours in the casino
and you maybe come out of there
not losing too much dough but the
casinos the slot machines the payouts on
board they're not regulated by any
entity this ship line can make it pay or
not pay anything it wants in Vegas you
know the competition is to get people to
come into the casino and they brag about
their payouts ninety ninety eight point
four percent payout ninety eight point
eight percent payout cruise ships I
don't even know if they have a seventy
percent payout they're really really bad
I've been in casinos on Khrushchev first
packed you know you know a hundred
twenty five slot machines two hundred
slot machines they're all going I've
never heard anyone scream loud going
never heard it never seen it you know
you they win twenty bucks ten bucks they
give it all back so that's all good
there might be better off playing
blackjack if you're any good at that
Karen he you the man mark the loss
travel or does anyone gamble on your
ship the odds are worse plus there's no
gaming commit Gaming Commission yeah
just know no hope for Yannick on a
cruise ship for gambling I there are
other games you can play they may in
some cases they have poker rooms but not
often even for that
they the house wants a cut of the action
and that means blackjack or slot
machines those are the two I think main
games of chores choice I think you can
play roulette as well but with the ship
tipping I don't know if I trust it mark
says a friend I have in Las Vegas Eddie
a slot machine
maybe after 100 poles on a ship 500
poles
yeah I'm not I'm not a I'm not a fan of
the I wouldn't recommend casino play on
a cruise ship as your pastime because it
is a guaranteed loser long-term you
might get lucky with you know the 10th
pole got you 150 bucks but there there's
no big payouts on cruise ships I'll tell
you what I find fun and interesting I
love watching people in the casino that
play those games where you have to put
the quarter in the little flipper
machine and it flips the quarter inside
the glass dome there and you're trying
to get the quarter to flip higher up and
then push the other quarters forward and
then the quarters come out down here I
always get a kick out of watching people
play at OHS and sometimes the cruise
lines will put like a $20 bill they'll
they'll they'll fold a $20 bill and have
it on top of the quarters and then if
you play hours and hours you can get the
money to finally allow the 2000 reel to
fall over and then you see a guy get a
$20 bill but you know you spend $100 to
get it anyway it's just something to
watch if it's you know you're walking
around the ship with nothing to do
let's see a gamble on the ship you're
going to lose you're gonna lose the ship
yeah you're gonna lose the fort and
everything else not not very good yeah
that's something to to kind of watch out
for
folks I got to tell you today has been a

P0087 Troubleshooting - Diesel Insights

P0087 Troubleshooting - Diesel Insights

Duramaxtuner:

- I'm Nick Pregnitz and on the DYNO here
I have C4500 series truck.
This is an LMM, and we're
going to be troubleshooting
a low fuel-rail pressure code.
(rock music)
We get a lot of calls into
the shop here troubleshooting
P0087 codes on LBZ/LMM trucks,
and the problem with these codes is
that they show up on 120
- 160,000 mile trucks
that are run hard, under
hot conditions, loaded,
and it's really hard to duplicate those
in a diagnostic scenario.
So, when we get the trucks
we can't get it to duplicate
the problem, so we can't troubleshoot it.
Well, we have a DYNO, we have
an awesome ventilation system.
So, those days are gone.
Now we actually duplicate those symptoms
on site with the truck here.
And what that means is
running the truck under
a very heavy load for
a long period of time,
get the engine coolant
and temperature hot,
get the fuel system hot,
run the air conditioning,
really simulate the same conditions
that driver's seeing on the road.
From there we're gonna see how hard
the fuel system's working.
So we're running the truck
at 300-320 horsepower,
and we're gonna see how hard
that CP3 is working to keep up.
Now what happens is the fuel gets hot
and everything else gets hot.
The injectors start returning more fuel,
the fuel system starts to
not be able to keep up.
And what were gonna see in the cab,
is that the duty cycle on
the fuel pressure regulator,
is gonna keep creeping up
as I stay on the throttle.
And eventually, it's gonna
creep up to the point
where it can't keep up anymore.
And then the actual fuel rail pressure is
gonna deviate from the
desired, and then P0087.
Okay, so lets take you in the
cab, show you how it works.
(whirling noise)
Okay, so were in the cab, and
we have the truck running.
And what I have is Owen has
pulled up a data stream for us
so we can see all the important things
that are going on here.
Okay, and I'm just gonna run through them
so you know what they are.
APP is throttle position, okay, so zero.
As I rev the truck you can see it change.
RPM, engine coolant
temperature, at 167 right now.
We're gonna see it creep up past 210.
Fuel temperature, as that goes up,
our problem should get worse.
Here's our actual rail pressure,
and our desired rail pressure.
And P0087 code means we have deviation
on the actual rail pressure
from the desired rail pressure.
And we will be able to use
these numbers to confirm that.
This 1400 number here is gonna be our
fuel pressure regulator duty cycle.
That's gonna go between 1500 and 400,
which is the factory minimum.
Now, as that thing comes under 850,
that's my indication that the
regulator is working very hard
to keep up with the fuel system.
As it trends towards 400
and bottoms out at 400,
that's when we're gonna
lose fuel pressure,
and we're gonna see that deviation.
You can see this next one
here is our fuel volume.
That's our total volume
delivered by the fuel system.
In gear, tow haul on.
And what I'm doing is a diagnostic test
where I run the truck at a
constant speed under heavy load.
And that speed is 50 miles an hour.
I'm just gonna let it get
up, and gear and get moving.
And I want you to watch engine
cooling temperature creep up,
fuel temperature creep
up, and watch this number,
which is how hard the fuel
pressure regulator is working,
start to trend downward.
Now you see, we started over 840,
and now we're down in the 780s.
You can hear that engine
fan kick on at 210.
Oh yeah, she's roaring now.
And when I see that
thing going towards 750,
I know this fuel system's
working really hard.
What I can say is that this truck
with 180,000 thousand miles on it
is just straight up
running out of fuel system.
We're returning a lot of fuel.
Okay, you see things dropping?
And this is stuff you'd
never seen on the road
or just taking the truck
out and test driving it.
But now look, we're
coming under 26000 PSI.
The truck's unable to keep up
with fuel pressure command.
If I stay in much longer,
we're gonna start to see
that P0078 code show up.
I don't want to beat the truck
any harder then I need too.
But we've confirmed that
it's unable to keep up
with the fuel command.
I'm just gonna let it cool down
because everything is very hot.
Okay, so we've gone through our test.
We've proven that the fuel system
is unable to keep up with command,
and we've proven that it takes
a long time to get there,
but we've shown that.
Okay, so now it makes sense
to talk to the customer
about taking the injectors out
and going through the fuel system.
What I'm going to do is just
keep the oil pressure up,
keep the engine RPM over 1250,
so we keep things circulating
and letting the truck cool down.
You know, I really hate
to beat things this hard,
but sometimes it's really
important to validate a theory.
And, you know, we've done that.
So, hope you enjoyed this episode.
I know I have. We'll see you next time.
I'm Nick, thanks for watching.

Chevrolet Bolt EV Traction Motor - Deep Dive

Chevrolet Bolt EV Traction Motor - Deep Dive

WeberAuto:

Hello, I'm professor John Kelly and this
is the Weber Auto YouTube channel.
In this episode we will be disassembling
the drive unit the electric motor and
gear reducer out of our 2017 Chevrolet
bolt on the hoist behind me here. now
this drive unit and electric motor
combination is is all one piece,
unlike the Nissan Leaf that has a drive
unit that unbolts from the electric
motor. This drive unit is rated at 150
kilowatts which is 201 horsepower, it is
also rated at 360 Newton meters of
torque which is roughly 266 foot-pounds
of torque.
Now let's let's talk about torque just a
little bit. That torque rating is what
the motor itself is capable of producing,
that is not the same as the torque that
ends up at the wheels of the vehicle, so
for example the Chevrolet Spark EV
produced by Chevrolet before the Bolt
here
actually had an electric motor that
produced 540 Newton meters of torque, the Bolt EV electric motor only produces
360 Newton meters of torque and so you
might be misled into thinking that the
Spark EV had more torque; well, the motor
did, but not the torque delivered to the
axles that drive the wheels. So the gear
reducer right here on the side of this
drive unit has an impact on that because
gear reduction is also torque
multiplication minus frictional losses, so
the Spark EV had a 540 Newton meter
electric motor but it only had a three
point one five to one gear reduction
unit which resulted in about 1700 Newton
meters of torque at the wheels, at the
axles. the Bolt EV electric motor
produces 360 Newton meters of torque a
whole 180 Newton meters less of torque
from the motor, but it has a seven point
zero five one eight to one gear
reduction through this gear reducer
which multiplies that 360 Newton meters
of torque by seven point zero five one
eight, which gives us over 2,500 Newton
meters of torque at the axles. So there
are other electric vehicles out there
that are being produced right now that
have higher torque higher motor torque
than the Bolt EV
but what would be interesting, I and
I don't know what their gear ratios are
yet, is to see what is the torque
actually to the axles what's the torque
to the ground because that's what you'll
feel when you step on that accelerator
pedal, that's the torque to the wheels
that makes the vehicle move. The design
of this drive unit this electric motor
it has a peak amperage draw of 400 amps
versus 450 as for the Spark EV so it
uses less current to provide more torque
so it's a more efficient better design
electric motor. The electric motor in
this drive unit spins clear up to 8810 rpm where the
Spark EV only spun up to about 4500 rpm,
and we'll take a look at some
differences in the electric motor design
and the stator winding design that
allowed it to spin at those higher rpms
without the AC losses that typically
occur at higher rpm. As mentioned in the
previous video on high voltage
components of the Chevrolet Bolt EV this
drive unit uses about 2.9 litres, around
3.1 quarts of Dexron HP fully synthetic
base transmission fluid automatic
transmission fluid. It also is cooled by
the General Motors Dexcool 50/50 mix
of coolant and deionized water. Okay
let's take a look at the outside of the
housing here of this drive unit. The
official name or designation of this
drive unit by General Motors is the
1ET25. The one means it's a one speed
trans axle, this doesn't shift, E means
it's electronically controlled, T means
it's a transaxle, and the 25 is a
relative torque rating. Alright, right
here on the front of the transmission is
the actual last eight digits of the
vehicle identification number and you
can see that MMF right there, that is
the three-digit regular production
option code the RPO code that you can
find on label in the back of the Bolt EV if
you take out the lower compartment
carpet and look in what looks like a
spare tire tub, there's a label on the
driver's side that has a whole bunch of
three digit codes on it
MMF just means that's which transaxle
or transmission this vehicle came with.
Okay right here on the top of the trans
axle is the transmission range selector
actuator and this is a brushless DC
motor with a gear reducer that actually
moves the shift lever to put us in to
Park reverse neutral Drive and low, now
technically inside of this drive unit it
there's really only park and not park,
but there is a position sensor in here
called an internal mode switch that will
monitor which position the transaxle
range selector is in so that the vehicle
can act appropriately. For example the
shifter itself on the center console is
not directly connected to the drive unit,
it's just an input to the computer that
controls this actuator, so when we go to
the reverse position for the neutral or
drive or low, there's a feedback on the
internal mode switch electrical
connector right here, that lets the
engine control module, even though this
doesn't have an engine, know which gear
range you have selected so that it can
request the trends axle act
appropriately. Also, right here by the
electrical connector for the internal
mode switch is the transmission fill
plug, so if you want to put fluid into
this transmission you need a 14
millimeter wrench or socket to take this
plug out and put the Dexron HP fluid
into the transmission. There are two
drain plugs on this transmission, one for
each side, so there's one down below on
each end of the transaxle the driver's
side and the passenger side, there's
there are two separate drain plugs to
get the fluid out of each side, now
there's only one fluid that goes
throughout this entire transaxle but
because of how its baffled and set up
inside to remove all the fluid you need
to remove both plugs.
Now speaking of fluid and fluid level
when you drain fluid at whatever the
recommended fluid change interval is or
if you're doing service work on the
transaxle here and you're adding fluid
you need to know when to stop adding
fluid, so on the other side of the
transaxle right here is the transaxle
fluid level check plug, so the drain
plugs right down here, the fluid level
check plugs here, the fill plug is on the
other side so you take the fill plug out
you take the fluid level check plug out,
and you add fluid until fluid comes out
over here, and then you let it sit and
stabilize for a minute add a little bit
more and make sure that fluid comes out
comes out to a slow drip, and then the
instructions tell us to put both plugs
back in and go drive the vehicle until
the transmission fluid temperature
reaches 35 degrees Celsius or 95 degrees
Fahrenheit and then double-check the
fluid level again to make sure that
comes out at a very slow drip. Alright,
while we are here on this side of the
transaxle we have an electric motor an
electric pump for the transmission fluid
so there's a big filter we'll see when
we take this thing apart down the bottom
center of this transaxle it will pull
fluid up from the filter and then put it
into what's called the oil sump so the
oil sump is basically just a great big
bathtub looking area up here that the
pump fills full of fluid and then there
are these little drain channels that
fluid drains down to cool the stator
windings and lubricate bearings and so
on and we'll see that once we get the
cover off so we have an electric 12 to 14
volt driven electric motor that pumps
fluid throughout this transaxle. From
what I read this pump only works when
you are in Reverse or Drive, it does not
pump when you're in park or neutral.
Alright, we have another electrical
connector right here, this connector is
for the resolver which measures the
angle of rotation the direction of
rotation and the speed of the electric
motor rotor itself, and then there's a
transmission fluid temperature sensor
that is in the bottom of this
transmission case cover here. All of
those are accessed electrically through
this electrical connector right here. As
you may have seen in my other video on
high-voltage components we have the air
conditioning compressor of the bolts up
here and then we have our coolant pipes
that go into what's called a coolant
sump in the bottom of this transaxle and
we'll see that here in a few minutes but
we have coolant going in coolant coming
back out and goes through a series of
cooling fins and cooling circuits to
absorb heat from the transmission fluid
right here on the back we have the
electrical connection for the
three-phase cables that come from the
the
single power inverter module that sits
two modules above here. Three-phase
orange cables come down to drive the
electric motor, there's a cover
the cables bolt on and then there's a
cover they'll holds the cable in place.
We have a transmission vent right here,
let's just take that vent off while we
vent tube off while we're here now you
can see the oil sump area again on the
top and the cooling sump coolant sump
area here in the bottom all right there
is one additional plug on the side of
the case with the electric motor and
there's nothing in the service
information to indicate this but I
believe this is a pressure test plug to
check the pump output pressure, but I
can't find any information on what that
fluid pressure should be. Okay, I'm going
to be disassembling this transaxle right
here on the workbench but there actually
is a special fixture to hold this
transaxle and allow you to rotate it and
disassemble different pieces of it and
still be able to rotate it for
convenience. I have this special adapter
as you can see here in this photograph
but the way it's mounted it's too high
and too difficult for me to disassemble
in that holding fixture being in a
wheelchair, so the workbench is where I'm
going to disassemble it, but I wanted you
to know there is a special fixture for
that and I tried it it just doesn't work
for me.
by the way this transaxle weighs about a
hundred and seventy pounds or 77.4
kilograms. Okay, well we're ready to
start disassembly, the first step is to
remove this oil pump the 12-volt power
oil pump, it has three bolts right here
and a few seals underneath it as you can
see here there are two seals that seal
the pump to the transmission case right
here there are two bolts that hold the
cover over the pump gears themselves
there are no instructions on
disassembling this so I assume we're not
supposed to disassemble it but that's
exactly what I like to do
take things apart I'm not supposed to as
long as I can get them back together and
make it work again here we go we've got
a Jew rotor style oil pump there's an
o-ring right here that needs to fit in
this groove to seal and then the cover
just bolts on okay the next thing on the
list is to remove the left-hand and
right-hand output shafts that go into
our differential side gears in the gear
reducer this is the left-hand side right
hand side over there it calls for a
slide hammer and a old pilot bearing
removal tool for a manual transmission
so this is the pilot bearing removal
tool right here and a slide hammer and
we are supposed to put this up inside
and put it into the snap ring groove for
the CV shaft and then pop it out well
come to find out the snap ring groove is
thinner than the tip of this tool that's
supposed to go into it and I didn't
realize that's what the problem was and
I had a hard time getting these output
shafts removed I finally got him out but
once I got a mound got looking at the
tool versus what they were supposed to
be grabbing I realized I need to grind
these down make him a little thinner so
that they'll actually fit into the
grooves of the her for these CV shaft
snap rings that are there so since I've
had this entire transaxle apart before
and I'll put it all back together
I've removed those snap rings they'll
hold these output shafts in place so I
can just pull them out by hand right now
this big long left hand output shaft
goes right through the center of the
rotor of the electric motor itself it's
it's hollow in the middle
and it has a big heavy-duty bushing
right here on the outside with the axle
seal and this is our left-hand output
shaft and then the CV shaft itself plugs
into here that goes to the left front
hub and bearing assembly and tire and
we'll assembly so there's our left-hand
axle shaft there's a snap ring that fits
in that groove right there typically and
I've just removed and I've just removed
that snap ring for ease for this
demonstration here obviously I'll need
to put that back in when I reassemble
so that's the left-hand axle shaft on
the other side we use the slide hammer
again and pull out the right hand axle
shaft as you can see this one is much
shorter than the other one and it has
the support bearing in the differential
case itself that holds it in place and
its own snap ring that I've already
removed and of course an axle sill here
on the other side as well okay the next
thing on the list is to remove this
transaxle case to remove the case I've
got to take the linkage off and our
actuator off and then we've got these
bolts to go all the way around and then
we'll be able to see the gear reduction
transfer gear and the final drive ring
gear and differential gear set so I'll
take the clip out and lift up for a
linkage on the shift actuator and then
take the bolts out
okay here's the shift actuator assembly
itself transmission range selector
actuator kind of a great big piece I
I've seen some of these that are smaller
right I'm not sure why this one is so
giant I'm not I've never seen one this
big but it obviously does the job of
mechanically shifting the transmission
range lever since you have an electronic
shifter on your center console alright
let's take these bolts out of the trans
transmission case okay I've got all the
bolts out of the transmission case now
we can attempt to slide it off it has a
couple of dowel pins they'll hold it in
place there's a couple of pry points
plus one right back here and another one
right here there we go
I'm going to come in with a plastic
mallet here and just tap lightly there
we go okay we can see inside of the
transmission case itself and the only
things in here of real interest are the
transmission internal mode switch right
here we got the electrical connector
right here harness right there that
connects to this outer blue connection
connector that will read which Range
Park reverse neutral low you have
selected with your transmission shift
lever and then we have the parking
linkage right here we've got Park
reverse neutral Drive
and low now of course normally
transmission fluid would would be
pouring out of here of whatever didn't
get drained out when you drained it
previously but I've had this apart and
cleaned everything up before we have our
ring gear right here and our
differential gear set and as notice we
have real nice ball bearings here these
bearings since their ball bearings
instead of tapered roller bearings have
to have in place shims so there's a
special shimming procedure to control
the end play of these bearings that will
have to go through when we reassemble it
so you're supposed to take these shims
off and throw them away well and then
replace them with new new ones when you
go back together I suggest that you take
them off and measure them and then hang
on to them because you might you might
need them again when I took these off
previously and measured them they were
almost all identical in the thickness so
there are six of these shims for the six
ball bearings that are in this transaxle
four of these shims measured exactly
half a millimeter in in with the other
two one of a measure one millimeter in
width and the other one measured 0.9
millimeters so you need to keep track of
what thickness shim you had where and
write those down so that you you'll have
an idea of at least what it was before
you took it apart now if you're just
going back together and you haven't
changed any shims or any parts inside
just reuse the old shims but if you're
changing a bearing or any of these
internal pieces you need to go through
the special measurement procedure that
we'll see when we go back together to
determine if these shims are correct
okay so there's there's special shims on
each of these
bearings I've measured all of them RIT
written their dimensions on the ziploc
bag here that I keep them in and will
refer to those when we go back together
all right now we just need to remove the
counter gear right here and the final
drive a ring gear and differential gear
set this is where our short little
output shaft plugged in right here and
then our long one came all the way
through on the other side okay before we
remove these gears there is a an
aluminum gasket with a rubber seal
embedded into it the instructions tell
us that is not reusable
there is also an oil baffle right down
here to channel transmission fluid away
from the ring gear to reduce losses as
it rotates into it and to splash oil up
into different channels to lubricate the
the bearings if we look in this case
half right here you can almost see what
looks like a funnel right there for the
fluid to drain back down and lubricate
this outer bearing and a similar one
here on this other other side for that
bearing so we've got a oil baffle to
remove all right I've got the oil baffle
removed on the other side of that is our
magnet for metallic particles from gear
normal gear wear and other malfunctions
okay now we're ready ready to remove
these gears pull out on the counter gear
and then pull out on the final drive and
it'll come right out if you don't pull
out on that counter gear first there's
not enough clearance for the final drive
Unit two clear so here's our final drive
you can see our open differential gear
set inside there here's our sim on the
other side as well
all right the instructions tell us that
we can if we won't want to remove the
park linkage in the internal notes which
I don't really care about that that's
just regular stuff that you'd see in any
other automatic transmission so let's
continue on with things that are unique
to the bolt
evie drive unit here the one ET 25
transaxle so let's turn the transmission
case around and we'll take off the
transmission case cover here on the
driver's side
now the SAE document the details the the
bolt evey drive unit here that I told
you about in the high voltage component
video tells us that the drive unit
itself was designed to be serviceable in
the vehicle that's why they have a case
removable case cover on one side and a
case cover on the other side for the
gear reduction unit you can leave this
Center portion with the electric motor
in it in the vehicle and just remove one
or both case covers to do service work
on components inside the case covers
seal replacements resolver replacements
internal modes with replacement and so
on but anyway we're going to take off
this case
cover next from the driver's side all
right this case cover is going to be a
little harder to get off than the other
one because the rotor that has internal
magnets embedded inside of it has now
magnetically pulled itself over to the
stator because we are no longer
centering it inside of the stator itself
and so it puts a it pulls it off to the
side just a little bit so there's a
prying
right here
and there's a pride point right down
here another prior point right here
there we go okay so here's our case
cover and it has an aluminum gasket
that's not reusable as well our case
cover has this long transmission filter
that's not serviceable without
disassembling things as you can see has
a temperature sensor down inside of it
right there and then this is our
resolver our serviceable resolver that
measures the position speed and
direction of rotation of the electric
motor rotor inside the transaxle here
let's turn this around oh by the way
down inside of the bearing housing there
is a shim for the ball bearing right
here on the rotor itself so we're
looking at the stator and the hairpin
six conductor deep stator design a
unique design we'll talk about that a
little bit more once we get the stator
out we have a lubrication channel right
here where fluid is going to drip out of
our oil sump and run along and drop down
on to the stator windings themselves and
cool the the stator windings it also has
a drip channel that comes over and goes
down to this bearing here to lubricate
it
so we've just got an 8 millimeter head
bolt holding the filter in place and as
you can see the filter just has an
o-ring seal on the one side and you can
see the pick up filter screen filter
element on the inside so this is going
to reach all the way in up underneath
the the stator itself to pick up the
fluid on the back side of it and on the
back side of it is the inlet of the
coolant so that would be the cooler oil
on the back side there all right then on
the resolver it just has eight three
eight millimeter head bolts to hold it
in place and one electrical connector
this resolver only bolts in in one
location it's not adjustable it has
automatic learn unlike the older Toyota
Prius resolvers that that would actually
come out of alignment
if you unbolted them and there was no
way for you to line them back up okay so
here is our resolver pull back on the
connector position assurance clip
depress the tab and remove the resolver
itself the resolver is a serviceable
unit when and if it ever goes bad but it
should should never go bad all right
then the remaining wire harness and the
pass-through connector here just goes
over to our temperature sensor okay next
on the list we need to remove what is
called the center support this is what's
supported the driver's side ball bearing
of our differential case assembly
okay this is our center support it's
held in place with six bolts and aligned
with two dowel pins right there now with
that removed there's nothing to stop our
transfer gear from sliding out it's just
a tight fit on the bearing in the bore
as it should be just pray lightly
sometimes these will just slide right
out and right in and other times they'll
they'll fight you here we go okay so
here's our transfer gear it's ball
bearing and shim so put that shit over
here with the others okay right here in
the end of the case we still have a
lubrication channel right here from the
oil trough the oil sump I mean right
there and then we have a cover for the
three-phase electrical connector right
here as well then on the other side we
have that oil distribution channel right
here that cools the stator so we've got
to remove that we are now to the point
where we are ready to pull this rotor
out but we just can't grab on to it and
pull it out it has some super strong
neodymium magnets multiple layers envy
configuration inside of this stator
you're not going to pull it out by hand
and you sure don't want to come in here
and start prying on it so the only way
to get that rotor out of there if you
want to remove it for service replace a
bit bearing on it or the gear on the
other side or another bearing or just
replace the rotor itself for whatever
reason loss of magnetism and trouble
code sets or whatever
it takes a special tool to pull it out
without having it rub on the stator
frame itself and without having it
injure you with you trying to pull it
out and it's pulling back in with all
its magnetic strength so true get that
out there's a special guide tool that
will hold it centered in the stator and
we need to set that up next and it
starts on the other side here so there's
a special tool kit that costs almost a
thousand dollars to Center this rotor as
you pull it out I found one on eBay for
a little bit less than that but but it's
a very expensive tool but if you want to
do service work on this transaxle you've
got to have it so let's bring in the
special tools okay so I brought in the
special tools to keep the rotor centered
there's a special spacer with a notch in
it to clear that notch right there this
is just gonna fit in there just like
that then there's a plate that bolts on
over the top of this to hold it in place
these don't need to be super tight
they're just holding that little spacer
in place so I'll just lightly Snug those
up then there's a sleeve here that's
supposed to fit down the center of that
rotor but these sleeves are a little bit
too big I've had to take sandpaper and
send them down to make them fit inside
of this rotor and I don't know if that's
because the tools were made for a first
design rotor and then they changed it or
if they just made the tools incorrectly
but these tools are from what used to be
can't more tools the special tools
supplier for General Motors it's now
Bosch service solutions so Bosch you may
want to take a look at this this tool
here the DT five two zero one one
- one - three because it doesn't fit
it's not doesn't Center up inside the
the rotor as well as it should
i've had to sand it down just a little
bit and then i'm able to tap it in a
little bit there but I think that it's
supposed to be if it's supposed to be a
tight fit but it should be able to slide
in by hand I believe then we have a
guide pin that's going to go through the
center of that then we have this outer
housing the bolts in place to hold the
guide pin in place so the blue sleeve
this one here because there's one for
the other side also centers the rotor
into this plate and then this sleeve is
centered into this plate so we've now
centered the rotor on this side of the
stator so now we need to go to the other
side to put additional tools in to get
it centered and then pull it up and out
okay at this point if I had the
transaxle mounted in that special
rotating holding fixture I would just
simply rotate it on its side and get the
get the rest of the tools hooked up but
I don't I'm not able to use that so I'm
just going to put some extra long bolts
in this side of the case to hold the
case up off of this tool when I tip it
over to support it as we pull the rotor
out
okay so here we go we're going to tip
the tip the whole thing up on its hand
just like that so now we've got
clearance for the tool underneath and we
can get the upper tools set up to pull
the rotor up and out all right while
we've got the transaxle tipped on its
side let's take this oil sump cover off
and show you what's inside of there so
it's just a big empty trough and you can
see has one two three four five six
holes in it where fluid is going to go
out and drip down on other parts inside
of the transaxle for stator cooling and
for the ball bearing lubrication the
cover itself has that same aluminum
gasket that's not reusable also while we
have this transaxle on its end let's
turn it over and take the coolant sump
off next okay here's our coolant sump
you can see this pipe right here is
where the coolant comes in and it has to
wind back and forth back and forth and
then come back out over here the coolant
sump which is visible from the bottom of
the car with the under car cover removed
also has that same aluminum gasket
that's not not reusable why are they not
reusable I don't know maybe the aluminum
crushes these I'm going to see if I can
buy replacement gaskets at the local
Chevrolet dealer it seems like I saw a
service bulletin saying that all these
parts are serviceable now and it gave
the part numbers for them but if not
none of these are damaged it only has 35
miles on it and I'll reuse them and see
what happens
okay so coolant sump oil sump so now we
are ready to pull out the rotor assembly
so to pull out the rotor assembly we
have a guide pin it's going to come in
and screw into that dowel they had a
threaded end on it all right so this
threaded guide pin did not line up
exactly perfect with the guide pin down
below I can't tell if we're just
spinning the whole thing there we go
all right it's screwed all the way into
that alignment dowel from below now we
have this tool that has three holes that
go over the holes where the stator bolts
are so we need to remove the stator
bolts next these stator bolts are not
reusable three stator bolts so we put
this tool over the top of that we want
to be very careful that we don't damage
pry lean or set anything on the stator
windings here that could cause damage to
them so we'll get that lined up just
like that now I'm going to reposition
the camera so you can see
how tall this next tool is that fits on
here all right we have two clamshell
type tools that are going to come in and
clamp down over the resolver cam rotor
there and this bearing they're gonna go
just like that except I need to split
them apart so I can get the next tool in
it says this big tall piece right here
that's going to go over and down into
our stator bolt holes so we've got this
threaded shaft we've got this adapter
right here that these little clamshell
tools are going to hook into and then
the threaded shaft with a nut on the top
of it we're going to tighten that nut
and pull the rotor up out okay so the
tricky part of giving this hooked up is
getting both of these
clamshell tools over this lip right here
so I have to loosen the nut on the top
and let it come down let me turn this
you can see what's going on
there we go okay so we slide that open
clamp the clamshells around it put this
sleeve over the top of it to lock the
clamshell in place snug up this nut to
hold the lock in place and then from the
top here we start to pull up on the
rotor itself I'm going to get
repositioned bring my chair up a little
higher here so I can reach that nut it
takes quite a bit of turning to pull
that out okay here we go thirty
millimeter wrench we want to turn the
nut and prevent the shaft from turning
so I'm just going to hang on down here
as it comes up those guide pins the
guide dowels keep it from rubbing on the
stator frame although although there's
almost a strange ratcheting sound as I'm
pulling this out that makes me think
it's barely contacting the the stator
laminations or the rotor laminations
anyway we'll pull it out and take a look
see if we can see any witness marks you
can see the top of the rotor now is
starting to appear
I think we're finally clearing the top
of the yes we are it all of a sudden got
real easy to turn the nut so we no
longer have the magnet pulling out or
resisting us pulling out okay you can
see the entire length of the rotor here
get another bearing down below it and a
gear below that now we're supposed to
just lift up on this and and pull it out
I'm not sure if I'm strong enough I may
have to bring in the the engine hoist to
pull it out of here but it's just
sitting on these three non-magnetic
aluminum poles here and we've got the
weight of the the rotor assembly itself
I measured it earlier but I can't
remember what it is at this moment but
let's see if we can lift this up and out
though I cannot so let me get the engine
hoist we have to lift it up high enough
to clear that alignment dowel so I've
got to lift it up probably four more
inches 100 millimeters or so okay I've
never tried this before it's just a lift
strap let's bring it up
okay the lifting or the tool was getting
stuck in one of the holes for the the
stator bolts there we go
okay here we go
and we've cleared the alignment dowel so
slide the case out of the way here and
we'll let that back down
oh let's see how much that weighs it
says it weighs 60 pounds with the tool
the tools probably 10 pounds of that
okay we have to remember that this rotor
is highly magnetic very strong eight
pole magnetic field around this thing
and so we need to keep it away from
anything any metal particles or any
tools or anything else that could cost
cause it to receive damage on its
laminations here in looking at the the
laminations from removing it I don't see
any obvious damage at all there let's
let this down and take the the tool off
and just look at the rotor itself
little clamshell pieces out of there
these tools are magnet earth iron some
some sorts so we got to keep those away
from the magnetic field as you can see
these blue bars are aluminum they're not
sticking to the the rotor itself and
then plastic of course works great with
the magnetic fields so now we've just
got our rotor we've got our drive gear
down here I've got a ball bearing and
another ball bearing there's another
shim down inside the case a bigger
diameter shim for this bigger diameter
bearing all right I'm going to get some
wooden blocks to put this in all right
here's the rotor for the bolt
evie as you can see this bearing seems
to have some sort of a gray coating on
the outer race where this one does not
and on the counter gear bearings they
also have this gray coating it doesn't
say anything about what that gray
coating is for I suspect it's to prevent
corrosion from the dissimilar metals
with possible induced currents going
through them with the the motor running
vehicle going down the road I've seen
this type of coating on universal joints
in universal joint caps universal joint
caps bearing caps in an aluminum
driveshaft the same color I don't know
if it's the same material but if any of
you know what this coating is for if
you'd please put that in the comments
below I'd appreciate that
I'm just speculating okay so we've got
the rotor out of the way this is a
serviceable piece now the last piece to
remove is the stator assembly itself and
it has three special guide pins that go
into the stator bolt holes and screw
into the transaxle case and then they're
tapered on the top here and that's to
allow you to slide the stator out
without it binding inside so I'll slide
that over there rotate it down and just
pull out slightly
here it comes just like that so here's
the stator for the Chevrolet bolt Eevee
if we zoom in close and look at the
stator windings you can actually see
there are 1 2 3 rows of these hairpin
conductors which means they are 6
conductors deep in this stator and from
what I read in the SAE document on this
new improved motor that helps reduce the
AC power losses at the higher motor rpm
a typical stator like in the previous
Chevrolet Volt had 2 rows instead of 3
so they were four conductors deep in the
Chevrolet Volts and six conductors deep
here and one of the people that was on
the original design team for the
Chevrolet Volt told me that when they
designed this electric motor and it's
designed for maximum efficiency and hand
power that there was no other motor out
there that could even match the
efficiency of this motor and they said
that they designed this motor to be the
next small-block Chevrolet so to say of
power trains so the small-block
Chevrolet was and still is a very
popular very powerful v8 engine and has
been for many many years and their
intent was to have this motor design
maybe even this drive unit be in
multiple platforms with the same high
power high efficiency motor system if we
look at the other side here of the
stator windings you can see the the
other end of the hairpin conductors and
then there's a drip channel right here
for oil to come out of that oil sump and
to drip down and go down and lubricate
the stator windings because these get
really hot this is the heat source
inside of the transmission and it and
although it gets hot it doesn't get as
hot as the fluid
although the fluid gets hot it doesn't
get hot as a normal planetary gearset
style automatic transmission and the
cooling system surge tank reservoir cap
was only pressurized to 5 psi for this
loop of the cooling system so much lower
amounts of heat compared to an internal
combustion engine with a torque
converter heat generating planetary
gearset style of automatic transmission
now just a couple of things to get
wrapped up with this disassembly video
because we will reassemble it showing
the special measurements for the shims
and everything when we go back together
but one thing I wanted to show you about
these electric vehicles is how simple
they are and when I mean when I say
simple I don't mean simple design
meaning it was easy to design these
simplicity is not necessarily easy but
if we look at the number of rotating
parts in this entire drive unit
there are basically three main rotating
parts we've got the rotor assembly that
then turns the counter gear right here
that then turns the final drive three
pieces no clutch packs no bands and no
sprags no roller clutches no Pistons
none of those hundreds of parts that you
would see in a typical automatic
transmission let alone the internal
combustion engine that this is replacing
of course there are three main moving
parts these pieces here but each one has
two bearings on it so there's six more
pieces so there's nine total and then
inside of the differential here we have
two side gears and two differential
pinion gears so that makes for a total
of 13 possible moving parts inside the
of this drive unit and only when you're
turning corners would the side gears in
the differentials
be rotating at a different speed than
the differential case so a real basic
very reliable system these electric
vehicles and and this one is is very
efficient and that the design is very
compact to where this left-hand output
shaft remember goes right through the
center of the rotor instead of being
offset like on the the Nissan Leaf and
other electric vehicles out there so
congratulations to Chevrolet and the
design team that came up with this
amazing and efficient and simplistic
evie drive unit and I think it's
absolutely beautiful so coming up I hope
to shoot a reassembly video with all the
measurements for this drive unit and
then we've got all of these parts out
the drive unit all of the electronics
and our and our Chevy bolt back here on
the hoist is totally empty yeah under
the under the hood so we've got to put
that all back together and and make it
work again even the battery is out the
whole thing is stripped as far as the
powertrain is concerned and we're gonna
put that back together and and make it
work and hopefully get it converted to a
DC fast charge thank you for watching

10 Reasons Why Engines Lose Power Over Time

10 Reasons Why Engines Lose Power Over Time

Engineering Explained:

Hello everyone and welcome in this video we're talking about ten reasons why engines lose power over time and a huge
Thank you to AutoTempest.com for sponsoring this video
This is an awesome website that brings together listings from all the major used car sites
So you can search in just a single location
And i'll include a link to that in the video description for you to check out now
I've organized this into four categories because internal combustion engines and more specifically gasoline internal combustion engines
really need four things in order for that smooth combustion to occur you need air you need fuel you need compression
And you need a spark
And so we're gonna walk through these different sections and talk about how your engine could start to lose power over time
Based on these four different parameters not working out so much in your favor so getting things started right off the bat with air
Filters, this is something super simple to fix
But you can get air filters that clog up with time as debris gets in there and so this can cause a pumping loss for
Your engine your engine has to work harder to bring in air because that filter is clogged up and it may not be able to
Pull in as much air and so as a result you can't make as much power
Number two is the throttle cable and this relates to cars with mechanical throttle cables this cable can loosen over time
It's a super simple fix to just retighten it it can stretch over time and as a result
You may not be able to open your throttle all the way and of course if you can't open your throttle all the way you're
Not going to be able to get in all of that air and therefore you're gonna be making less power now
That's talking about the intake side of it now
Let's kind of move to the exhaust side of it the air of course has to move through that engine nicely on both sides
So your catalytic converter can get clogged up over time from rich air/fuel mixtures. You know having the engine cold things like that
exhaust particulates can build up in there and you know the same thing can happen with your muffler number four you can have
Deposits build up in there reducing and restricting air flow through your exhaust causing additional pumping losses
And you know also these mufflers
as they age
Some of them can even rust and that internal piping can kind of fall apart and as a result it may not act as efficiently
As it once did number five is fuel injectors
And you know as a result of heat soak as a result of using poor fuel
These can get clogged up with time from particulates within the combustion chamber
Of course if they're clogged up
You know can cause
Misfiring it can cause your air fuel ratios to be thrown off and as a result you're going to be making less power
Also on the fuel side is the fuel pump and these can wear out over time and so you'll kind of notice this
Because on the low end they'll work just fine
And they'll be able to supply fuel and then as you get into those higher rpms with high loads or in you know higher loads
for a long duration
The fuel pump may start to struggle and not be able to meet that fuel demand and so you know you can kind of notice
That if you're going up hills if you're in that high load higher rpm scenario
And you're struggling to get power it may be a failing fuel pump that can't quite deliver that fuel quantity anymore
Number seven is piston rings wearing down, and this is one of those things
That's a bit more challenging
To replace because it requires stripping down the entire engine to get to those piston rings in order to replace them if you were needing
To do that basically a whole engine rebuild but these piston rings will wear against the wall over time and over time as they wear
You can have increased blow-by and as a result you're getting less
Compression so one thing you can really do to help prevent
Your piston rings from wearing is just make sure you stay on top of your oil change intervals to make sure that those piston rings
Are well lubricated,
against your cylinder walls.
Number eight and this one's going to play a big role in how much power you can create
And this is deposits on your valves and more specifically your intake valves so over time
you know especially in direct injection engines
Which don't have port injection where that fuel is being sprayed over the intake valve and constantly cleaning it off
And you have your positive crankcase ventilation system where you're sending oil back through your intake and then on to your intake valves
Or it can start to build up those deposits on it
so this can cause a lack of
Compression because that intake valve may not be able to properly seat in that valve seat and it can also cause
Backfiring you know as you're compressing back in you may be able to squeeze some of that air fuel
Past that intake valve and as a result you know you're not gonna have good compression
You could have backfiring if that
Combustion is able to exit past that valve and of course it also plays a role with your air and fuel as it can cause
Additional restriction for air flow to come by and it can mess with your air fuel ratios
Number nine is spark plugs and these can get fouled up with time from fuel, from oil, from carbon deposits,
And this can cause an inconsistent spark and of course misfiring
So you of course need your spark plugs in good working order in order to make peak power and finally number 10
We're going to talk about knock so as you start to have these deposits
forming
Within your cylinder walls and on your Pistons these deposits can heat up and cause knock and so if you do start to have knock
In an engine the first thing your engine's going to want to do is
Retard the timing so fire that spark plug later and as a result if it needs to do that to
compensate and to make sure you don't have knock you're going to be losing power because it's firing that spark plug later and again a

Here’s What Happens if You Don’t Change the Fuel Filter in Your Car

Here’s What Happens if You Don’t Change the Fuel Filter in Your Car

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, today I'm gonna talk
about fuel filters in your car and what
damage can occur if you don't change
them and they get clogged up, now fuel
filters of course, filter contaminants
out of your fuel so they don't mess up
with your fuel system, and to understand
how they work here's a little history
lesson, when I was a young mechanic in
the sixties all cars had carburetors to
make fuel go into the car, and most of
them had a tiny little brass filter like
this, that would filter out water and
some impurities you can see it's just a
tiny little metal thing that went in the
front of the carburetor, now the first
car I ever had was an Opel, yeah a German
car shocked you doesn't it, it had such a
small gas tank, it was only ten gallon and
it was metal it was rusting out, so
I put an inline filter like this to get
rid of some of the crud, because I didn't
have any money to buy a new gas tank, but
even though this is a reasonably sized
filter, rust sediments are so small rust
kept getting into the carburetor, and it got
so bad that I would take the carburetor
apart all the time to clean the crud
that went past the filter, and I didn't
even have money for a gasket, so I used
the Kellogg's cereal box and I cut the
gasket out and I had a bunch them lying
around so I could clean it out put
another gasket in and go down the road
realize carburetor system, this is an old
Volkswagen Beetle carburetor, don't have
much pressure, the fuel pump would put
out one and a half pounds pressure or so
so dirt could get stuck because there isn't
that much pressure pushing it through
but cars have been fuel-injected for a
long time, they have higher pressure, it
can go anywhere from 40 psi up to the
modern GDI engines that can have over
1500 psi pressure, now other cars like
this 94 Toyota Celica, they had fuel
filters externally, here it is it's just
a big canister there's a bolt on the top
and a threaded rod on the bottom and you
replace the fuel filter every 40, 50
thousand miles, now this is a fuel
injector, one that goes on that older one
and if you look inside look, at those
tiny holes those are the little tiny
holes inside where the fuel sprays into
the engine, you don't want to clog them
up, and many of them have a little screen
just like a tiny mosquito screen on your
house window, to keep dirt from getting
into the injectors and if any of them
get clogged up, your car is gonna run
poorly, now if your fuel filter gets
clogged up it can do two main things, one
it can lower the pressure that goes to
the fuel injectors, so if they don't have
the right amount of pressure they can't
spray the right amount of gas into
the engine, and if it's clogged up enough,
it
can trip a code and turn you check
engine light on and when you scan it, it
can say, engine running too lean,
well it's running too lean because it's
got the normal amount of air coming in
unless your air filters clogged up, but
the fuel filters clogged can't pump
enough fuel through, the pressures too low
and then the car will run lean, now
eventually running lean can burn out your
Pistons, make your cooling system
overheat and ruin the engine, and it can
burn out your catalytic converter by
making it run too hot, now testing for a
clogged fuel filter used to be easy in a
car, we used to just have pressure gauges
quick install connectors, and on many
cars like Ford's GM's and Chrysler's
they had a little Schrader valve just
like the valve on your tire, you would
just snap and on and take the pressure
to see if there's any pressure problems
like either too low or too high if the
fuel pressure regulator was bad, it was
easy to do, but on most modern cars, hey
there's no such valve, in order to check
the pressure you need a kit with all
these adapters, it's a royal pain in the
butt,
here's some of my adapters I've got a
box that's got three times as many, it's
a real pain taking fuel pressure
readings in a modern car, plus if the
fuel filters clogged up sometimes
there's enough room for the pressure to
be high but the volume is low, so when
you're going at higher speeds it's just
does enough volume and you can't go fast
and doing a volume pressure test is
another real hassle to do, so basically
you want to make sure your filters clean,
but here's the stinker of it on most
modern cars, you can look around all you
want under the hood, but you're not going
to find a fuel filter because guess what,
they've hidden it away and wherever they
hidden it, they've hidden it inside the
gas tank, engineers and our questionable
wisdom, have decided it's more efficient
to have the filter right next to the
pump inside the gas tank, well guess what
changing it out has become a gigantic
pain in the rear end, now in the case of
this Matrix, it's not that big of a deal
it takes less than half an hour to
change the filter, you just take out the
back seat, there's a little four screw
cap that covers over the where the gas
tank is and when you take that cover off,
you
get inside gas tank and you can replace
the filter assembly, now Toyota calls it
a fuel filter fuel pump assembly and
they want six hundred and ninety seven
dollars, but aftermarket you could buy
just a filter itself and replace it, but the
old saying out of sight out of mind
really fits it here, most people don't
see it, they don't think about it and you
leave it alone,
but a clogged fuel filter will cause the
pump, this is the tiny little pump that
they use in Toyotas, to work too hard
then burn out, then you'll have to
replace the $697 pump and filter
assembly, so really you don't want your
filter to get clogged up, now I have to
admit, I live in Houston Texas a giant
city, and all the gas tanks at the gas
stations have been dug up and they put
in the fiberglass ones that don't rust
so you don't get crud in the gasoline
from the tanks rusting and then water
intruding in the gasoline, so if you have
a good supply of fuel you really don't
have to worry about it getting clogged
up, but who knows sometimes I've seen
they made the gas wrong, and then when
people pumped it, the car started to die,
the filters started to clog up, there's all
kinds of things that can happen, water
can get in them, you really want to make
sure you have a clean filter, especially
if you live in an area where the fuel
quality is questionable, and if you drive
a diesel it's even more important, diesel
believe it or
not, there's fungus that can grow inside
the tank and clog everything up, so you
really need a good filter on a diesel
and you need to change it a lot and
whatever you do, don't believe that
nonsense that a lot of the manufacturers
say that, oh you don't have to change the
fuel filter it's a lifetime fuel filter,
well what they mean is, it's lifetime if
it clogs up and a fuel pump burns out
because it's clogged up, then you get to
replace that $697 assembly and they make
a lot of money selling it to you, now you
don't need to change the filters in the
modern car all that often, maybe once
every four or five years or every 60,70
thousand miles, but as you now know it's
a good idea to keep them clean
so if you never want to miss another one
of my new car repair videos, remember to

P0641 - SENSOR REFERENCE VOLTAGE A CIRCUIT OPEN
System: Computer output circuits
The DTC code P0641 OBDII is output when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects an open circuit in the reference voltage circuit "A".
The reference voltage circuit A, is the circuit that supplies a voltage to the sensors that control the transmission train.
All the sensors and modules of this circuit are interconnected through the CAN bus system (Control Area Network).
If there is an open circuit in the reference voltage circuit "A", all these sensors, modules and subsystems that share this circuit may have faults.
Generally this code is accompanied by other fault codes.
Symptoms of the DTC code P0641 Generic
• MIL Light on.
• The Changes during the march can be delayed or erratic.
• The transmission may not make the changes.
• Fault in the transfer case to change gear to high.
• The speedometer may be inoperative.
Causes of DTC code P0641 Generic
The diagnostic code P0641 OBD2 is set due to the following causes:
• Open circuits or connectors.
• Links of fuses or the fuses themselves in bad conditions.
• The system's power relay may be defective.
• A sensor in poor condition.
Possible solutions of the DTC code P0641 Generic
For a correct diagnosis and solution of the fault code P0641 OBDII you must do the following:
• Check the fuses of the system, as well as the links of the fuses, taking the circuit to full load.
If you find fuses burned, you must change it.
• Inspect the cables and respective connectors related to the sensor system.
If you notice that one of these components is worn or has corrosion you must change it.
• With an automotive scanner delete the code and see if it returns.
• If the code returns, use a digital volt-ohm meter and check the reference voltage, as well as the ground circuit on the sensor.
Generally volts must be 5 as well as a connection on the sensor connector.
• Test the continuity and resistance of the sensor.
Check with vehicle information for test specifications.
If you do not coindise the values obtained, repair and, if necessary, change the sensor.

How Drones Could Change The Shipping Industry

How Drones Could Change The Shipping Industry

CNBC:

Today, container ships transport more than
90 percent of all goods in
the world and more than 4
trillion dollars worth of goods annually.
But it can take over a month for
those goods to sail from Beijing to
New York.
By land, trucks move nearly 71 percent
of all freight tonnage in the
United States.
Problem is, there's a shortage of
truck drivers in the U.S.
So how do you speed up
shipments while keeping personnel low?
The future of shipping
looks very much unmanned.
Anything that has high levels
of customization, anything that's
unpredictable, that should be
done by air.
Many startups believe the answer
is autonomous flying cargo drones
that can carry heavy loads
and fly long distances.
All around the world, millions of
people are benefiting from drones
already, and we're just at
the tip of the iceberg.
The global drone logistics and
transportation market accounted for
more than 24 million dollars in 2018,
and that number is expected to
grow to 1.6
billion dollars in 2027.
These drones could be the disruption
needed in a global supply chain
that has been largely
unchanged since the 1950's.
Getting large shipments of products
across large distances is
difficult. That's why Malcolm McLean
created the shipping container
in 1956.
This standardize the shipping industry
and allowed shipping to scale
in ways that
weren't possible before.
For a typical product that is
being shipped from overseas and then
received within the United States,
that would involve trucking, ocean
freights, in some cases we're seeing
the emergence of more rail being
used as it's becoming a
more reliable mode of transportation.
But now, with programs like
Amazon's one-day shipping, consumers are
looking for goods to
get to them faster.
That means the standard shipping methods –
ships and trucks – have to
be re-evaluated.
There is a seemingly insatiable demand
for things right away by
consumers and that just keeps
growing and people become increasingly
impossible over time.
What it seems like is the supply
chains, which are wildly complex, are
built around the timeliness
of air freight.
But the cost per item for
air freight is significantly more expensive
when compared to sea
and ground shipping.
We're at the point where you
really need to have those high-value
goods or some kind of an
emergency shipment would be an ideal
candidate for air freight because
it cost so much.
In the United States in 2016, 11.6
billion tons of goods were
shipped via truck, 1.8
billion tons were shipped via train,
740 million tons were shipped
via a cargo ship and only 5
million tons were shipped via airplane.
But using autonomous flying cargo drones
to ship goods might bump
that number up.
Air freight is actually a mode
of transportation that has increased
dramatically. It's still a small
percentage of all freight being
moved, but if you look at the
percentage change over the years, air
freight has been growing
much more rapidly.
I think a big reason for
that is the growth of e-commerce.
If you're living in a small village and
you want to ship goods and be
a part of a global economy, often
your freight link is by road or
rail and it takes quite some time
for your goods to be transmitted
around the world.
So when we bring autonomy and
scale into aviation, every community
can be connected with the rest
of the world through a airborne
freight link.
And I think that that means
massive potential for economic growth in
communities all over the world.
The main challenge is volume.
You just can't lift as much weight
into the air as you can floated
along the sea, especially if you're
trying to use battery powered
vehicles like many of the smaller
drones we see today. Current
battery technology is incredibly
heavy. Volans-i, a
drone company that has been working
in this space since 2015 created
a hybrid vehicle that uses
electric power to take off
vertically, then standard fuel
to fly off horizontally.
So, if you build an all-electric vehicle,
you have an 85 percent mass
fraction on the batteries.
So that means you can carry 15
percent the rest of the weight in
payload, which doesn't really make
sense for cargo delivery.
See, the more volume you carry,
the cheaper shipping becomes, even if
that means traveling
longer distances.
Going in from Shanghai as an example,
to the United States might take
about 28 days by ship, whereas by
airplane it'll only take 14 hours.
But still, ships are cheaper.
A medium sized 2,000 pound box from
Shenzhen, China to New York can
cost $1,200 by ocean, but it
can cost $4,000 by air.
Natilus is working on getting that volume
up and the costs down by
using jet fuel powered drones
to autonomously fly goods long
distances, like across the ocean.
Natilus is building large-scale unmanned
aircraft the size of Boeing
747s to reduce global air
freight costs by 50 percent.
It will do this by using a
uniquely shaped vehicle designed for cargo,
not passengers, unlike other
air freight carriers.
When Boeing and Airbus design
airplanes meant for passengers, whatever
falls out is what the freight
aircraft looks like and they're not
really optimized on volume.
It also wants to utilize
pilots more effectively. Instead
of having two pilots on one single
flight, it hopes to use one pilot
managing multiple flights remotely.
There's a huge bottleneck with pilots
today, which is limiting the
expansion of air freight as
well as passenger freight.
But Natilus is still not ready to
get its cargo drones into the air
for deliveries.
Companies like Volans-i have already
started making deliveries in
places like the Bahamas, a
particularly difficult area for deliveries
because of the large
distances between islands.
The company's goal is to alleviate
the shipping strains of high need,
expensive shipping, like when a specific
part needs replacing on a
production line, and it needs to
be replaced quickly since time is
money.
I started Volans-i out of a problem
that I saw while working at Tesla.
So imagine the Model 3 assembly line
goes down for one hour. That
costs the business hundreds of thousands
of dollars, in some cases
millions of dollars.
And at that point, the companies
and businesses are motivated to get
that up-time and get the line
going again at any cost.
And Volans-i is trying to help
with that business and with that
problem.
Other companies are trying to lighten
the load of the ever critical
last-mile delivery.
That's the portion of the shipping
process that gets the product from
its last warehouse or shipping hub to
your door, and trying to hasten
the delivery of medical supplies
and samples for testing.
Zipline has been delivering supplies
in Rwanda since 2016, Ghana
since April of 2019 and is
expanding its service to the U.S.
this year.
UPS has teamed up with drone
startup Matternet to quickly ship
medical supplies from a North Carolina
hospital to labs for testing.
I think we can use this
type of system to massively improve
health care in the country.
So imagine when you have to get
that lab result back, how crucial it
is to get it on time.
And with a system like this, we
can deliver the samples and then the
results much faster than we can
do it with the traditional
transportation methods today.
But news of these delivery drones
has been flying around for years.
Prime Air, Amazon's drone delivery system,
was teased back in 2013
and it still hasn't rolled out
the program, though Amazon recently
announced that it will launch
delivery drones within months.
We're building fully electric drones that can
fly up to 15 miles and
deliver packages under five pounds to
customers in under 30 minutes.
Well, the biggest thing I believe
that's pacing the development of the
drone industry is regulation.
FAA regulations are still pretty
strict on these autonomous flying
vehicles, and that has created
a challenge for these drones.
Competition for airspace is becoming more
and more heated as drones
of all sizes take to the air.
There have been some restrictions by
the FAA that have restricted the
use of drones for delivery to
consumer homes, and, you know, that's
something that needs to be overcome
and they're continuing to work
on.
Autonomy brings a whole new set of
public concerns, just as we've seen
with self-driving cars, because the
public has grown to appreciate
the safety and the assurance of being
able to fly from one place to
another. The regulators are hesitant
to permit new technologies from
entering the airspace until they
are really proven satisfactorily.
Another big concern when it
comes to automation is jobs.
As you hear some of the challenges
related to drones, that's one of
the things I've heard come up.
There would be this whole workforce needed
to be able to manage this
drone network.
But this technology could help alleviate
some of the worker shortages
that the shipping
industry is facing.
I think what you're seeing today,
the airline sector, for example, has
a massive pilot shortage and it's
forecasted to only get worse than
the number of people that are going
to be traveling by air is
expected to double over
the next 15 years.
But customers, shippers and regulators all
see the promise in these
autonomous flying vehicles for
emergency deliveries, for incredibly
high speed home deliveries and even
for large shipments of goods.
So I think that there's great
opportunity here with unmanned cargo
aircraft to start proving out some
of the technologies in a
lower-risk environment without people on
board, and these same
technologies can eventually be introduced
to the aircraft that we
will use for flying around
cities to and from work.
And I'm really excited about
skipping the terrestrial traffic as
well.
