The Truth About the New Chevy Cruze, Buyer Beware

The Truth About the New Chevy Cruze, Buyer Beware

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, Kenneth case of
Scotty
I really like my 2017 chevy cruze
premiere RS I never had a problem
throughout my ownership should I keep it
thanks, well it's a 2017 it's only a year
and a half old, you better not have any
problems, you might as well keep it cuz
I'll tell you the truth if you try
selling that thing now, you'll see how
much money you will lose, what you owe on
it versus what it's worth it would be
foolish to sell it now maybe you got a
good one that's gonna last, I never advise
anybody to buy it and I got a customer with
one he's got a picture of Mickey Mouse
in his back window cuz she's sued them
under the lemon lawn for some weird
reason they gave him back three thousand
dollars and that was it, they wouldn't
take the car back so, you know but if it lasts
drive it around cuz you would lose your
shirt if you sold it now, CK says Scotty
I'm looking into buying a 2004 GMC
Canyon with two hundred sixteen thousand
miles from a mechanic should I buy it
okay
well it depends if it was the mechanic's
vehicle and he took care of it, not a
bad idea but if he's selling it for somebody
else
you kind of think now the canyon was
kind of a bizarre truck they weren't
that bad
I mean look that thing's got a lot of
miles it's still running, I just uh
wouldn't pay too much for it, it's a 15
year old GMC pickup truck with two
hundred sixteen thousand miles if you're
looking for a Knockaround truck to haul
a little bit of stuff around why not but
just don't pay too much, it's an old GMC
truck with a lot of miles on it,
Albee says what's your opinion on police
cars mainly 2013 police patrol vehicle
Taurus with the 3.7 Mustang engine with
100,000 miles on it, well that was a fun
vehicle in its time but the thing is if
it was a police vehicle, generally they
drive them like maniacs and they get
the heck burnt out of them, I mean you generally
expect you're gonna put an engine or a
transmission in them in a short period of
time, but if you are thinking about
buying one use, do not touch it until you
get a guy like me a professional
mechanic and gonna check it out with his
computer and road test it and tell you
what kind of shape it's in. you want to
start there if you do want to buy a
vehicle like that, they can be fun to drive
around but of course don't pay much for
it, a used police vehicle the resale
value is not that much, you don't want to
pay much because
you know you're playing with dynamite
you don't know what's left with that
vehicle, why do you think the police get
rid of them every so many years,
Alvaro Tejado says Scotty I got
a 95 volvo 940 when i start it up in the
morning it makes the metallic rattling
sound when I rev it, it goes away for 3-4
minutes, the engine was rebuilt seven
years ago you know what's really typical
with those things, is the catalytic
converters rattle as they age for some
reason they made them crappy inside your
catalytic converter are these honeycomb
pieces that have platinum in them and
that burns hydrocarbons and as they age
especially on those vehicles it cracks
and they will rattle, but then when they
heat up the metal expands and they
stop rattling check that first now, if it
runs okay it doesn't hurt anything and a
new cat for that vehicle cost an awful
lot of money, you might live with it if
it is the cat rattling and it runs okay
when it doesn't run good, the
temperature gauge run hotter and you'll
only be able to go like 55 miles an hour
not any faste,r then you know it's
clogged up and you'd have to replace it
then, US storm says Scotty I have an 07
Honda Civic LX coupe with rear drum
brakes should I upgrade them to disc
brakes, okay here's the thing the rear
brakes on that car are one thing mainly
most of the power is stopped in the
front disc, the rear drums are there
so the car doesn't fishtail when you
stop hard and when you corner and stop for
normal driving those work perfectly fine
and you're not gonna have any problems
with them, it's kind of a waste of money
putting it in a little car like that it
really doesn't need it it's a light car
and disc brakes for all four wheels are
more for racing because they don't fade
when you stop go fast stop go fast stop
go fast, drums will actually stop a car
just as fast one time but in a race they
aren't that's why they were first used
in race cars because they're slamming them on
and hit the gas, slamming them on and
hitting the gas and the drum brakes will
overheat where the discs wouldn't and
that's why they started using them but
on yours are you really wouldn't want to
spend money for that, my Honcho says Scotty
should I put fuel injection on a Dodge
Dart 318 v8 well it's a good question
but depends on what do you want to do
with the thing, if you're planning on
selling it in the future, no because if
it's stock that's a classic 73 Dodge dart
you're gonna lower the value by taking
the factory stuff off,
but if you want it to drive faster
and get better gas mileage, put it on but
save all your old parts, save the
manifold, save the carburetor because
then if you sell it at some point in the
future
you can say to the guy, look I did this
because I like fuel injection you want
to go back to stock here's all the parts
in the box keep them all, don't throw
any of them away, always do that with the
classic car never throw any old parts
away and if you want to modify it to your
heart's content you're gonna keep it for
years go right ahead
just keep the old parts, so if you never
want to miss another one of my new car
repair videos, remember to ring that Bell!

Why GM Doesn't Make Good Cars Anymore, What Went Wrong

Why GM Doesn't Make Good Cars Anymore, What Went Wrong

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, zack says
Scotty my old family are GM fans, do you
know when GM car started to make them
poorly, my guess would be when they went
bankrupt around 2009, well they started
to make them poorly long before that, even
in the early 2000s they started to make
a lot cheaper stuff, I don't know how
true it is, but I talked to an engineer
and an engineer told me one time that GM
and Ford were going neck to neck and
people thought, Oh GM's are made better
than the Fords and then they did a
little research and GM found out that
they were spending 20% more building
their vehicles and that's why they were
better vehicles back decades ago, well
according to the engineer that I was
talking to, GM looked at and said gee
were spending 20% money more than Ford
building our cars, let's make them
cheaper, so they did and then the quality
went down, I know if it's true or not but
an engineer told me that, but they
have been going but down since the
early 2000s, it's just the nature of the
beast with corporations these days, they
want to make a profit and they want to
make things as cheap as they can and pay
people that make them as little as
possible, so they make more profit for
the corporation that's the way that
things go and sometimes it takes the
wrong turn like GM did and make products
that you don't hold up like they used to,
I learned to drive on a Chevrolet
Biscayne the thing was like a tank it had
a
302 v8 in it and that thing just ran
forever but not the new ones their not made
that wa,y no Oberto says Scotty
I am seriously considering buying the
2019 Land Cruisers, do you consider it to
be
the best quality built SUV I'm aware of
the gas mileage, yes they are for that
kind of a vehicle if you're willing to
spend that kind of money and get that
kind of low gas mileage, they are well build
vehicles my customers with them are all
pretty well happy with them, other than
the horrible gas mileage and if you're
willing to spend that kind of money, they
can last a long time, I got customers
with those thing that have three hundred and
fifty thousand miles on them and they're
still running strong, yeah if you don't
mind spending that kind of money go
right ahead, me I'm too cheap I'd never
spend that kind of money, Rambo ask
Scotty what do you think about me buying
a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
all wheel drive with 140,000 miles straight
6 for six grand
from my uncle as a first car,
well first of all some uncle he should
give you the car, now I'm not a Jeep fan
by any stretch of the imagination but
back in 2004 they were building much
better ones than they are today now that
Fiat owns them, that straight six-cylinder
engine can last forever I've seen those
things go 400,000 miles, good engines the
transmission that's an OK transmission
it's not great but it's not totally
horrible, it's a 15 year old Jeep try to
get it for a little bit less than $6,000
see if you can barter it, they can be fun
vehicles to drive around, realize they're
somewhat gas hogs because jeeps are
trucks their high up in the air, their not
aerodynamic or anything but it can be a
fun thing to drive, just try to get it a
little bit of lower, Scotty my SUV keeps
going out of alignment I had new shocks
replaced and no one seems to get the
alignment right, any ideas what as to what
it can be,
here's the thing, front end alignment
work we're talking about thousands of an
inches here thousands of an inches there
it's gotta be a pro who knows what he's
doing, so your best to find a
front-end shop that's all they do, here
in Houston I use cotton brothers front
end, they know what they're doing they
can fix any alignment problem, now the
second thing is, modern vehicles
especially the SUVs they're not like
vehicles when I was young, when I was
young they had all kinds of adjustments
there were like six different
adjustments you could do, today a lot of
times the only adjustment you can do is
the caster and the camber that's it
you can't do anything else, so it might
be that the alignment is off because the
struts bent or an a frame is bent, that's
why you have to start with a really good
front end guy, who knows what he's doing
and does good work you have to start
there, because otherwise all bets are off,
Devon says Scotty and I got a 93
3 liter 4runner, it does 16-17 mile per gallon
on the highway but does five to six in the
city any reason why, I live in Fresno
with hardly any traffic on the streets
Thanks, okay first of all, when you're
driving it in town does it get into top
gear, if you drive it really slow and the
transmission doesn't shift into top
gear, you're gonna get crappy gas mileage
like that, 16 to 17 is what those things
get on a highway, so it's working
normally at highway speed, so I'm
assuming it's not shifting into the top
gear when you're driving in town, go 35
miles an hour count the shifts as it shifts
and it should be into the top gear
if it isn't, you got a problem with your
transmission not shifting into gear
that's about the only thing that would
make sense cuz if you have any other
problem with the vehicle, it's gonna get
horrible gas mileage on the highway too,
the only difference is, it's shifting
into the higher gear on the highway maybe
it's not doing it in town, you should
still get at least 12 or something in
the city not 5 or 6, so if you never want
to miss another one of my new car repair
videos, remember to ring that Bell!

Here's Why Chevys are Crap

Here's Why Chevys are Crap

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, Christian Pete says
I got a 06 Chevy HHR heard some GM vehicles
won't work right with aftermarket radios
yeah you know it's true it's insane for
some reason a lot of the vehicles GM
made it that the radio is part of the
anti-theft system part of the starting
system of the car and I have had people
but aftermarket radios and the car once
thought they told it to me and I
explained to them you know it's got the
stupid interface for the starting system
I've also seen ones that they didn't
even touch of it's a factory radio but
something broke inside it in the car
wouldn't start
I don't know what this GM engineers have
in their minds or snuck up their rear
ends but they're certainly not doing it
right when they design stuff like that
that's just plain stupidity and they've
done it, v6 rice burner says Scotty I heard
that if the ground straps to your engine is
broken your wheel bearings can burn up
you know that sounds crazy but it's true
you gotta have a good strap from your
negative terminal your battery to both
the body of the car and the engine you
don't then ground its gonna seat you all
kinds of sources and since the tires are
on the ground it can even go through the
wheel bearings make them run hotter make
them burn out, so what
you want to do is everyone so how did
you check your ground straps it's very simple
they'll corrode it the battery clean
them or if they get loose tighten them
up and then the other end they just bolt
on you can unbolt them see if they're
rusted or corroded make them all shinny again
and then put them back on again it's an
easy thing to do and it's often to
collect it on older cars people don't
even think about it, James Royal the
first and he says I recently replaced the
catalytic converter on my Chrysler and my
mechanic
tells me the catalytic converter is
tripping a code that it's bad what could be
wrong all right well the first thing is
it's a Chrysler
unfortunately what people need to
understand about catalytic converters is
they burn unburned hydrocarbons so you don't
pollute if
a catalytic converter goes bad unless
you hear it rattling and it's physically
broken into pieces of rattling around
inside there's something that made it go
bad the engine is burning oil the engine is
running rich the engines running lean
fuel injectors are dripping too much
fuel and that runs the catalytic
converter or somebody was dumb enough to
spray silicone spray cleaner or using
something like seafoam and pouring it
right in the gas tank and then it can
mess with the catalytic converters they
go bad cuz there's a reason it hides out
with yours you got a serious problem
master mechanic who said you need a
catalytic converter again why is this
going on they don't generally go bad on
their own unless I say they break and you
hear them rattling, there's a reason they
go bad
and if you just replace the cat you'll just
keep replacing and replacing, williams GMC
say if
antifreeze gets into my engine and i
catch it in time do i have to replace
all angeles if you catch up in time and
it did damage you thing you won't have
to but here's what you have to worry
about your combustion chambers the
piston goes up it's compressing air and
fuel spray so that compress is pretty
good if you got a whole bunch of coolant
that leaked inside there when it goes up
and it's tell us to go further if it's
pushing against coolant the valves are closed
it still can push because the engines
got to spin it will bend the piston rods
goodbye it'll run bad, so if you
find that it still runs good now and you
change the oil and filter you're not
getting any foamy or a water mix yeah
you could continue in a job you want to
pray that not too much got inside there,
I'm at 9903 says my 07 hybrid
camry with 187 thousand miles is not
getting as good gas mileage as it used
to okay it's a hybrid often that's the
big giant battery the really expensive
one as they get older they lose
percentage of the power and as they do
your gas mileage will go down I see that
all the time in the hybrids now it is a
hybrid it's not a full electric car so
you want to check the spark plugs on
your regular engine that's a gasoline
four-stroke engine they are filled
there's stuff like that but if they're
all ok and it runs perfectly fine odds
are your hybrid battery starting to wear
out and then when you find the price of
that hybrid battery you might just live
with a little bit worse gas mileage
Wilhemina j says, Ford f-150 I was
going down the road and the speedometer
just stopped working and all kinds of
lights came on all right you want to
pray that it's just the speed sensor
there's an electronic speed sensor on a transmission
measures how it spins around sends an
impulse to the dash and makes the
speedometer work now even though your
speedometer looks like the old-fashioned
kind they have a speedometer cable it
doesn't work that way the signal on a
transmission is digital and it goes to
the dash and the dash changes the digital
one
to a stepper motor and a motor turns it
so it's actually turning but it's not
directly with the cable you want to pray
it's just that because if it isn't it
could be something's broken in the
transmission and then you won't get a
signal from the sensor praise the sensor
simple you can unbolt it by one and put
on yourself too, very easy fix, Easy Rider
says Scotty why does the low oil light comes
on
in a 2007 Express but it's full on the
dipstick, knowing those things just change
the
oil pressure sending unit they don't
cost much both off full time that could
fix all your problems if that isn't the problem
then you basically want to go to a
mechanic like me we put our actual oil
pressure gauge on that's a physical and
it gives the actual pressure and if you
do have low oil pressure that can get
super expensive it can be a bad oil
pump it could be bad bearings worn in
the engine they'd have a bigger space so
oil takes up a bigger space that makes
the pressure go down you want to pray
it's just the oil pressure sending unit from
my experience on those it often is,
so if you never want to miss another one
of my new car repair videos, remember to
ring that Bell

I Can’t Believe I Said This About Chevy

I Can’t Believe I Said This About Chevy

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines
g garner says Scotty what do you
think of the chevy cobalt 4-cylinder not
much okay not for a small engine it puts
out a decent amount of power yes they
don't hold up over time the whole car
itself is a pile of junk and it doesn't
hold up over time if you want to get a
small car that's got some zip and it's
gonna last a long time go buy a Toyota or
Honda they run circles around those
things but on the other hand I always
want to tell people you got options
let's say you're gonna buy you used one
you can pick those things up for down to
nothing and if you don't mind driving
around one if you get it so cheap for
$1,000 $1,500 and it still runs and
shifts okay and it lasts a while now
you're making out okay I mean in a long
run now it's not a good decision but if
you can get one cheap enough what the
heck you're never gonna get a good
Toyota or Honda cheap because everybody
knows they're good cars and they go for
a lot of money use but those things they
got bad reputation for various good
reasons but you can get them dirt cheap
I've had customers buy those old sandals
for $1000 and driving for four or five
years and maybe spend five six hundred
bucks with me fixing them over four
years that's perfectly fine form you
know on their ugly looking cars and
those particularly ones that bashes on
them so they got then real cheap but if
you want a knock around car something like
that could be okay if you get a dirt
cheap but just don't think it's gonna
last forever
and you're gonna be able to drive it for
twenty thirty thousand miles a year and
drive it for years that's not gonna happen
Nick 20s says Scotty what are your
thoughts on discount gasoline sold
Costco Kroger and kwiki gasoline any
good okay every gasoline sold in the
United States has to meet certain
minimum standards its law and generally
in each area there's all you want to
supply or gasoline all the other
companies buy it like shell is the
largest refinery in the world the last
time I checked so a lot of the gasoline
is refined by shell and then say if you
buy Exxon gasoline in your area if shell
made the gasoline your buying shell gas
and the only difference does Exxon is
putting their protect
and it is on top of it and dying at the
color that they want their gasoline to
look so you know it's not like you got
a wide choice it where the actual
gas things coming from anyways it's the
same thing with batteries there's only a
handful of battery manufacturers left
over in the United States so even though
there's 40 different brands if there's
only three companies making them the
brand doesn't really mean up that much
you gotta find out who's making that
brand for gasoline in most areas same
company making all of it,
trade be hey from Canada I got an 06 5
speed manual Volkswagen Jetta 1.9 TDI
with 173 thousand miles on it
hey you're in Canada you're supposed to
say kilometres I'm wondering should I
sell it before it has engine problems or
hold on to it I got a new timing belt
and clutch I change the oil every 5,000
miles and do highway driving what the
heck drive it it's worth very little
with that mileage on it and being 14
years old and you never know I've seen
some of those things with 300,000 miles
on I just say drive it till the wheel
falls off cuz if you try selling up now
you're gonna get nothing for the vehicle
what the heck there's Scotty telling you
to keep a VW that's a rarity I
believe me but it's a standard
transmission it's a diesel it runs just
keep driving it chains and you never
know how long this thing's gonna last
let's you're gonna get much worried if
you sell it and what the heck up you get
years more out of it you're making out
like a bandit, ronald regan, gee I thought
he was dead
hey Scotty my daughter's 2010 Ford
Focus started cranking by a few
seconds normally it starts right up
tried to spray cleaner remedies and it's
slightly better but still randomly
cranks longer does the cleaning helped
of course try it again now if it still
doesn't change the fuel filter first
since the fuel filter gets clogged it'll
do that that doesn't do it
pressure test a fuel pump now you always
have to change the fuel filter and a ten
year old car before you price your test
the fuel pump because if the fuel
filters clogged up you're gonna get
false readings well why don't you change
the filter if that doesn't fix it then
test the fuel pump pressure and if it's low
replace it, it mean design its way out
which is typical when they get to be 10
years old like that it could just be
that the fuel pump is starting to go out
from old age they're electric pumps
after a while they wear out just like
anything else does, flabo I'm cleaning out
my dad's old
garage I found tons of old new stock 62
Ford parts and several cases of oil
transmission fluid in the old metal case
is dated 1971 is that me this oil still
good I mean you might want to use it for
a lawn mower or something if you wanted but
don't do that either,
put in on ebay people collect
stuff like that you won't believe what
people sometimes will pay for these old
cans with the old oil in them and even
the old 1962 Ford parts put it on eBay
you never know what people are gonna bid
for these days and those old metal cans
that they don't make anymore
those are collectors items lots of guys
have museums they want that stuff and
they pay a pretty penny for it why use
it for oil they can get for two dollars
a quart when you don't know what you're
gonna get for that stuff when it's that
old and this is the original can people
collect all kinds of weird stuff these
days they might give some pretty good
money for that stuff so I put it on eBay
if I were you, honest mechanic Scotty my
grandpa's a 69 Firebird 400 hasn't run
in 20 years I want a surprise I'm
getting it run I know I need a battery
plugs tires and brake fluid there I also
need new fuel lines and brake hose lines
what else do I need you want to check
anything that's rubber to see if it's
cracked and stuff cuz you don't want to
be on safe but of course yes to be
perfectly safe you'd have to do the
whole car all the rubber stuff and
that's an awful lot of money so you're
gonna want to clean the gas tank out
there's probably crowd in it putting in
fuel and change the fuel filter I
changed the coolant and you know why all
transmission fluid and then see what
happens because you don't want to go too
far until you see that it's running and
that it's going good once you do all
that don't give it a grandpa drive it
for you know 10 15 20 miles and see if
there's anything that's leaking if
anything's not working correctly and
then kind of go from there because when
you get an old vehicle like that I mean
it's a 69 you kind of restore it
gradually if it's gonna be kind of a toy
car the original equipment cost a
fortune to do and most people aren't
gonna do that you want to make it a safe
car do what I said and then drive it
around for you know 20 30 40 miles and
see how it feels and then
from there, so if you never want to miss
another one of my new car repair videos
remember to ring that Bell

Should You Buy a CVT Transmission Car (How It Works)

Should You Buy a CVT Transmission Car (How It Works)

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines,
believe it or not, it's snowing in Houston,
since I can't work outside now, I'm just going
to talk about CVT transmissions,
now many modern cars come with CVT transmissions,
it stands for, continuously variable transmissions,
they don't have gears like a normal transmission,
they don't shift from first gear, second gear,
third gear,
now to understand CVT transmissions,
here's a little history on transmissions in
general,
now the first widely accepted transmissions
in vehicles were standard transmissions,
with a standard shifter, and a clutch that
you push down with your foot,
they were extremely reliable, you shifted
it when you need to with your hand,
but they have one drawback, they are a pain
to drive in traffic,
and then came automatic transmissions that
were still geared transmissions,
but they shifted themselves automatically,
which of course people in the city love,
because then they don't have to think about
shifting,
they just step on the gas or the brake,
it makes driving a lot easier,
now for a long time, the standard transmissions
had more power, and got better gas mileage
than the automatics,
but as time went on, the automatic transmissions
got more sophisticated and more complex, and
more computer controlled, so that they would
get just about the same gas mileage as a standard
transmission,
but that wasn't enough, with pressure from
the EPA to get better and better gas mileage
from manufacturers, especially in the United
States, they started making these CVT transmissions,
because they get about 6 percent or so better
gas mileage than the normal automatic geared
transmissions,
as you can see in this diagram, there's a
gear shift that allows you to manually change
it from first, to second, to third, to fourth
gear,
and there's actual gears that you shift into
by yourself,
while in this diagram of an automatic transmission,
although it's a very basic one, the transmission
automatically shifts itself using various
types of devices to send power to the wheels,
while in this CVT diagram, you can see that
there are no real gears, it uses metal belts
and various shaped drums,
in order to make the car run most efficiently,
they have a lot less moving parts than any
modern automatic transmission and they get
the best gas mileage for whatever speed your
going that you can possibly get,
and decades and decades ago,
my grandfather who was also a mechanic, worked
on CVT transmissions, but they didn't work
all that well back then,
the garage was down at the bottom of a big
hill,
and when he worked on these CVT transmissions,
a lot of times they just would not go up the
hill,
they would slip so badly that they had to
go around to flatter ground to get up, they
wouldn't make it up the hill,
now metallurgy has gone a long way since then,
so the modern CVT transmissions, they'll go
up the hills and stuff, but a lot of them
have a lot of lag,
which many people refer to as a rubber band
effect,
you step on the gas and it's like winding
up a rubber band,
it doesn't go, it doesn't go, and then it
starts going,
but your going to find with many modern cars
like this Nissan, they come only with CVT
transmissions,
so what is there for you to do?
because the CVT transmissions are cheaper
to manufacture, and get better gas mileage,
your going to be seeing more and more of them
as time goes on,
so if your going to get a CVT transmission,
listen to this warning,
do some serious research on the models your
thinking about buying, for example,
I have never yet seen a Toyota Corolla CVT
transmission go bad, not a single one yet,
but I personally have seen dozens of Nissan
CVT transmissions go bad, especially in the
Altimas, and when the Altimas went bad, it
was either spend $3,500 to $4,500 having them
rebuild,
or buying a factory re-manufactured unit and
spending $5,000 to $6,000 to have it replaced,
so in this case, if you don't mind the way
the CVT's drive,
you would definitely get a Toyota Corolla
and you would pass on a Nissan Altima, now
since CVT transmissions are being mass produced
now, more than they ever have been,
I'm assuming in the future they will probably
perfect all the problems like they did with
automatic transmissions,
but me, I'm going to stick with my four speed
automatic transmission that's in this Toyota,
it's got 240,000 miles on it, and it's never
been touched and it still shifts like a dream,

Chevrolet Spark 1.2 LS | Auto Pedigree Car Review

Chevrolet Spark 1.2 LS | Auto Pedigree Car Review

Auto Pedigree:

Who Makes the Best V8 Engine and Why

Who Makes the Best V8 Engine and Why

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, today I'm going to
answer Eddy Vasquez's question, who makes
the best v8 engines these days, now to
answer that question I'm only going to
be talking about a regular v8 engine,
I'm not going to be talking about
supercars that cost hundreds of
thousands of dollars, and to answer
correctly we'll get a little bit of
history here, in 1915 Cadillac made the
first really mass-produced v8 engine,
which was a 5.4 liter v8 engine, now even
though it was sort of mass-produced, it
was still in a luxury car and it was
rather expensive car, the first really
mass-produced car that used v8 engines
were the Fords,
in 1932 Henry Ford made a flathead v8
and that was the first really
mass-produced v8 used in normal cars, not
used in either luxury cars or in trucks
now, Henry discovered how to make them so
they worked good, but there are less
expensive to build as an example, those
v8's only had three main
bearings on the crank, instead of the
usual five main bearings, so it cost less
money to make, so that made it more
affordable to put in regular cars, now the
main point of putting a v8 in was for
more power, and since it was a v8 there
were four on the left side and four on
the right, so that v8 engine could fit in
a vehicle they had a four-cylinder
engine because it's basically the same
length of the four-cylinder engine, you
couldn't get a big six in there or even
a straight eight, that would require a
gigantic hood to fit it into, the V8 fit
into a smaller space, and as it put out
more power people like them, you can
always get an option you get a
four-cylinder engine or you can get a v8
engine, people who wanted power hey they put
in a v8 like Bonnie and Clyde,
they always stole Ford's that had v8 is they
could
so you get a lot of power
out of a v8, but times are changing as an
example, a modern-day four-cylinder
engine, heck it can put out more
horsepower than a v8 engine did just 20
years ago, so you can get a lot of power
out of
a four cylinder engine which is making a
lot of these v8 becoming kind of like
the dinosaurs, their sort of towards the
edge of extinction, you'll see that a lot
of companies including Ford, are going
more toward turbocharged GDI gasoline
engines that are v6 instead of v8, they
can still put out a lot of horsepower,
but they get a lot better gas mileage
so in modern cars, at least most of the
American cars
the v8 engines are becoming more and
more specialized, as an example they use
them in all their racing cars, you get a
v8 and a Dodge Hellcat, you can get a
v8 in a Mustang, and you can get a v8 in
a Corvette, now I know GM is coming up
with I think they call it a zr1
and it's going to have 755 horsepower
but it's going to cost over 120,000
dollars, so I really don't include that
as a normal v8 engine myself, so I'll
start with the LS9 which puts out
638 horsepower, it's got a supercharged
v8, now I have to say it's a
pretty good engine, it's an old-fashioned
design it's still a pushrod engine, it
doesn't have overhead cams, it's pretty
much a gigantic gas hog in that kind of
form with the supercharger on it, it's
not gonna get very good gas mileage it's
only got the regular valves
per cylinder, it doesn't have four
valves per cylinder and it just got push
rods in it, it's a pretty old fashioned
design, but it's a pretty strong engine,
now let's compare that to the Shelby
gt500 that at least as of this time was
the most horsepower that Ford sold out
of the factory, and it was 662 horsepower
now the Ford Mustang engine was a much
more modern design, it had quad overhead
cams, variable valve timing, and it also
had a supercharger to give it all that
power, now the original ones had some
overheating problems, but they figured
that out as time went on, it's a more
modern engine, if you drove it not insane
you would get better gas mileage than
the GM engine, but I mean really you
got to take into consideration people that
buy
those kinds of vehicles are driving like
maniacs
I had one of the GT's for a while, heck I
was getting like three miles a gallon
in the thing because I was driving at
full speed all the time and that's
pretty much what you're gonna get in a
race car if you drive it full bore all
the time, the Ford engine had insane power
there's no arguing that, I thought hey
it's the fastest thing that you're ever
gonna get drive on the street that you
can buy out of a factory, but that was
before I drove a Dodge Challenger
Hellcat, that thing had even more
horsepower
it had 707 horsepower with a
supercharger on it, that's an insane
amount of horsepower,
now the Hellcat engine it's like the GM
engine it's an old style
it's a pushrod engine, it's not a modern
style by any stretch of the imagination,
but I do have to say, they've pretty much
perfected that design, if you want
horsepower and speed, say you're building
your own vehicle, they set it up that you
can buy what's called a hell crate
engine, you can buy just the engine and
put it in the vehicle that you want
because they know with that much horsepower
there's guys that want to get their
hands on that engine, and I know
people are gonna say, hey your always
booing chrysler products, but in
this case I do have to say that the
Hellcat engine is the best v8 engine
that's presently being built for normal
cars, if you can call that a normal car,
considering the power they put out and
the speed that people are driving, them I
personally haven't seen any big serious
problems with them, other than people
wrapping the cars around trees and stuff
and that's not the engine's fault, remember
we're talking about best v8 engine here
because being a pushrod engine, it's a
simpler engine, there's less stuff to
break on it, and really as far as I can see
in the future, this is probably the end
of the dinosaur age and for most intensive
purposes of mass production v8
engines will probably just start to fade
away, except for crazy gear heads like
that new Corvette that they're talking
about bringing out, if it starts at
120,000 dollars then that's becoming an
exotic car and there's lots of exotic
cars out there that have v8 engines, v12
engine, but hey for mass-produce engines
the v8 engine will
probably be just like in the Road Warrior
where Mad Max was driving one and they
said, it's the last of the great v8
because when you really think about it,
hey v8 engines were made originally for
extra power, now that even a small
four-cylinder engine could put out a ton
of power, the v8 engines really aren't
necessary, yeah I mean you can get them
to put out almost 800 horsepower, but
really who needs 800 horsepower if you
can get 300 horsepower on a little bitty
four-cylinder engine, hey that's plenty
enough to drive us around in our
vehicles, one of the early cars out
there, it only had one horsepower it got
people around, so we really don't need
800 horsepower cars to get ourselves from
here to there, and sure I for one will
miss the great rumble of the v8, they got
a unique sound to them, but as time moves
on I guess we got to move on too, and
since this is the Thursday segment where I
answer a viewers question, place your own
question on the YouTube comments below

2017 Chevrolet Spark Review | Features Rundown | Edmunds

2017 Chevrolet Spark Review | Features Rundown | Edmunds

Edmunds:

BRYN MACKINNON: I'm Bryn
MacKinnon from Edmunds,
and this is an Edmund's expert
rundown of the 2017 Chevrolet
Spark.
Whether you're looking
for your first car,
or you're just looking for
something small and agile
to motor around town in,
the 2017 Chevrolet Spark
is worth a look.
The Spark was just
redesigned last year
so there aren't any
changes for 2017.
Right up front,
it's worth noting
that the Spark is one of the
slowest cars in its class.
If you're looking
for something peppy,
this probably isn't
the ride for you.
Despite that lack of power, this
is a pretty good subcompact car
with some nice available tech
and impressive fuel economy.
The Spark is rated by the
EPA at an impressive 41 miles
per gallon on the highway.
And if you're driving the
Spark in a crowded city,
the small exterior
dimensions will definitely
help you squeeze into
tight parking spots.
That size means it's
tight on the inside
though, with limited hip and
shoulder room, both up front
and in the back seat.
Legroom and headroom
in the back suffer too.
So four adults will have
a hard time squeezing in.
The trunk isn't
very large either,
even by class standards.
It should be enough for at
least one or two suitcases,
but for big road trips you
might need to fall down
one of the rear seats.
Bottom line with
the 2017 Spark is
that you're looking at
a low-cost hatchback
with a few nice
available tech amenities,
but it's not that
impressive out on the road.
Rivals like the Honda Fit,
Hyundai Accent, and Ford Fiesta
are worth checking out before
you make your final choice.

Here’s Why Ford Mustangs are Breaking

Here’s Why Ford Mustangs are Breaking

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines, mh says Scotty do you
care for the Ford coyote 5 liter motor
they put an f-150 and Mustang, yes its
excellent engine great powerful v8
engine, you know they're really well made
now some of those had transmissions that
had problems, it wasn't the engines fault
the engines are real strong, but some of
those the transmissions went out,
especially some of the standard
transmissions they started making them
in China, yes in China, I had a customer
went through four standard transmissions
on that coyote engine, four of them on a
Mustang and they finally just said the
heck with it and they got rid of it, now
they got free ones because they're under
warranty, but I mean jeez after four of
them break down I'd be really iffy about it
too, and
when she found out that it was made in
China she was really mad, the engines are
good though, francisco reina says how often
should you use fuel injection cleaners when
you fill up sir, well actually if you got
a car and you take care of it and buy good
fuel
never, modern cars at least in the United
States the fuel you buy has additives in
it that are legislated by the government
so they don't pollute to make the
engines run better and so they don't burn
oil and you don't need to do anything, now
if
you've got one of those horrible GDI
gasoline engines the gasoline direct
injection, that only have GDI and they
don't have the port injectors too, and
they carbon up inside yeah then I
would say do it at least six times a
year, and get a special cleaner that's made
for GDI engines because they can carbon
up, but if you don't normal ones you
really don't ever need to do it, you buy
an old junker and it needs cleaning sure
but if you buy a car and you take care
of it and you put in good gasoline, you
really don't need to put any additives
in them, a lot of that is just
salesmanship by companies that are
trying to sell you something, memes ask
Scotty my friend is selling a 2010 Subaru
WRX with a rebuilt engine at 60,000
kilometers, he's selling it for ten thousand
five
Canadian is it worth it, what's your
opinion on WRX, okay you're in Canada
and I lived in Toronto a long time ago, I
know everything in Canada cost more money,
maybe six grand here in Houston but I
know Canada they go for more, now here's
the problem I would demand paperwork
from whoever rebuilt it what kind of
guarantee the guy gave, if he has none
he's says well this guy rebuilt it for me,
don't even
think about buying it, you gotta get
absolute paper working and research the
guy that did it, see if he really knows
what he's doing or just some guy that
put a head gasket in it cuz of blew the
head gasket, now if it actually was
rebuilt correctly and especially if it's
a standard transmission, a lot of the WRX
are standards, go ahead and buy it if you
like
the vehicle but make sure it was rebuilt
correctly,
Ken lee says hey Scotty should I get a
Honda Fit or a Toyota Yaris, well in that
case
I'd get the fit and here's why, Toyota
Yaris isn't a Toyota it's just a
rebadged Mazda, they're made by Mazda and
they call them Toyota Yaris and the
Honda fits are much better, they got
better engines and better transmissions
then what the Mazda has in it, so I'd go
with a Honda there, now especially if you
drive a standard transmission, the Honda's
are okay with the automatics, but with
the standard they're excellent vehicles
even with an automatic though I'd still go
with the Honda, cuz Mazda automatic
transmission stink, and that Toyota Yaris
is really Mazda, mr. car to get 12 says
Scotty
how are the facelifted 98 to 2001
sl500 in reliability, the engines are well
made
Mercedes makes very good engines there's
no arguing that, now it's a 500 so it's
pretty much of a gigantic gas hog in
town, a heavy vehicle with a big v8
engine they just sucked that gas down,
all the electronics the automatic
transmission, all that stuff can turn
into endless money pit, it's old now but
82,000 miles is low mileage for a car
that's 21 year old car, so that's real
low mileage if it's 82,000 miles, don't
pay much though they're worth nothing in
the real world, don't pay that much money
for them, you get one cheap enough and you
want a weekend toy go right ahead, but don't
think about buying one of those and think
you're gonna drive it as an everyday
driver and put 15-20 thousand miles a
year on it, it would bankrupt you, Joe
Martin says
can a clogged catalytic converter and make
your car start and then die, it certainly
can, it's just like stuffing potatoes in
an exhaust, which kids did when I was
young when they wanted to fool somebody, they'd
shove a
potato up the exhaust then the car wouldn't
run right and
they go nuts trying to
figure it out, unless they were smart
just went to the tailpipe and put their
hand at the end and saw that hardly any
air was puffing out when it was running and
they know it was clogged up, that's one
way you can test a clogged catalytic converter
go to any normal car when it's ice-cold
so you don't burn yourself, start it up
put your hand on the exhaust coming out
the back and you'll feel it puffing out
you know that's normal you can feel it, then
if it's clogged up if you touch it
hardly anything comes out you know it's
clogged up, now we mechanics have gauges
we take out the oxygen sensor and we
screw in a gauge and we see the pressure
and the pressure should only be maybe
one one-and-a-half psi and if it's five
to eight before the cat and then nothing
after it you know that the cat's clogged
and it needs to be replaced, pretty easy to
check but it will make a car stall out
so if you never want to miss another one
of my new car repair videos, remember to
ring that Bell
