The Drive with Alan Taylor:

Alan Taylor: Here we are again at the 2013
Hot August Nights. I'm Alan Taylor. I get
to be the Grand Marshal and this is the Grand
Marshal Car Show. I go out and hand-pick every
car. Today's category is Chrome and Fins.
The car behind me doesn't have the fins...
It's Glen Jahnke's '55 Nomad. He calls it
'The Mod Mad' because you guys have modified
the tar out of this thing!
Glen Jahnke: Yes, we've made a lot of changes.
Alan Taylor: Well, tell us what you've done.
Start at the front and work your way back.
Glen Jahnke: Wow. You know, almost everything
on this car has been changed. The front bumper
is an original style of bumper. It's one of
the aftermarket Smoothies. We took the bumper
and flipped it so it's actually upside down
from what it normally would be.
Alan Taylor: You always have to be doing something
different, right?
Glen Jahnke: You have to do it the hard way.
That's right... So the bumper has been molded
onto the panels of the car. It's got the air
dam underneath which is contoured to fit.
The fenders are ridged. The side molding is
all custom molding. It's made specifically
for this car. It's probably the only molding
like it. Also, the molding connects to the
headlight rings down in the front quarter.
The molding comes in there and is actually
part of the headlight ring.
Alan Taylor: Normally I say to start at the
front and people tell me what's under the

hood.
(laughter)
Alan Taylor: For this car, you could go on
for an hour about everything that's been modified.
What IS under the hood?
Glen Jahnke: It's a 383 Stroker with three
deuces. I've got a Tremec 5-Speed transmission...
Alan Taylor: I've got to ask. Why are you
guys putting
stick shifts in these big ol' cars?
Glen Jahnke: I love to play with them! I love
going through
the gears.
Alan Taylor: Good for you. Now let's talk
about the drive-ability of this car. With
a big car like this and a stick shift, is
it nice to drive?
Glen Jahnke: This car drives like a brand
new car. We have Height suspension under it,
and the frame is the original California seamless
frame. We boxed it all and C-notched it where
the exhaust comes out through the side so
that it's all reinforced. If you get a chance
to see the underside of this car—it looks
as good as the top.
Alan Taylor: Beautiful work on this car—totally
customized. Let's talk about electronics.
We live in an electronic age. What did you
do under the hood and in the car?
Glen Jahnke: As far as electronics go, it's
got many of the features of a new car. It
has heated seats, a rear back-up camera, and
the hood is electrically actuated.
Alan Taylor: You've got to see this hood in
action! You can pop the hood while sitting
next to the car. What else can you pop?
Glen Jahnke: We can do the rear deck. It raises
and lowers. There's also a special fuel filler
to put fuel in it through the rear license
plate. Of course, it also has all electric
door-poppers.
Alan Taylor: He took the door handles off.
They are all shaved. Wow. What color is this
by the way?
Glen Jahnke: This is a Candy Cobalt Blue with
a black base.
Alan Taylor: How many years were you working
on this project?
Glen Jahnke: About 4 ½ years.
Alan Taylor. It's a beautiful machine. How
many horsepower does it have?
Glen Jahnke: The horsepower on that motor
with the three deuces is 485 HP—465 foot
pounds of torque.
Alan Taylor: I love it! Glen, you have a beautiful
car. Thank you for having it out at the Grand
Marshal Car Show. I'd have to ask Tommy [of
Tommy Car Auto Body, Gold Hill, OR] since
he did all of the work about what type of
tools he used for this build. We know he's
got some Craftsman tools in his toolbox—He
has a big smile. That's Tommy Car Auto Body
in Gold Hill, Oregon. I'm Alan Taylor, and
this is just another cool car in the Grand
Marshal Car Show at Hot August Nights in Reno.

TravAlma:

Today we'll be discussing this Chevrolet Bel Air Wagon from 1956.
This car was made in 1956, which makes it 63 years-old...
It looks gorgeous.
It's so much fun. It's uber-cool!
I do't think that this'd be a car that you'd take for a spin only three or four times a year - and keep it stored in the garage for the rest of it.
It'd be so much fun that you'd be itching to drive it on weekly - if not daily - basis.
De-stressing in it with some music on.
So, we're driving in a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Wagon
Back in 1956 it was advertised as a family cruiser.
One would drive with family to... church!
Throw a surfboard on the roof and go enjoy the beach with your kids!
With this car you could go on a holiday to, say, the south of France (*from the Netherlands).
Cruising at around 80 mp/h. Surfboard on the roof...
Elvis' music on... Going to the beach with kids on a Sunday afternoon.
But this ain't only 'a toy for a Sunday afternoon'. You can do loads more with this car.
Because it's been thoroughly inspected and mechanically addressed where needed.
It drives sublimely... it's got a new vintage-style airco to keep you cool on hot days.
Like I said, put some Elvis on... cold air...
It's an interesting car from many aspects.

And it's not like you need an age to overtake a lorry - it's got plenty of torque and power. You can 'fly by' everyone if you put your foot down.
So It's a relatively fast car, too.
This is a lot of car! It's like a jack-of-all-trades.
People generally don't realise that. Most think that because this is an old car
It's gonna break often... All that nonsense...
Absolutely not true.
The beauty is, it of course has the 1950s looks, but both technically and mechanically this car has undergone a thorough - back-to-front - checkup.
It's got a fresh V8 engine
Fresh automatic gearbox, double exhaust system...
It drives great, the steering is light yet direct. It's got good brakes.
It 'hovers' over the road! Buttery-smooth transmission... Brakes like a tank!
One and all fun!
Zero stress and all fun!
It's got a new vintage airco. It's got bluetooth radio that's new but looks oldskool.
It's all retro.
Seats, upholstering, floor mats, the roof...
It's all been changed and it's all in two-tone.
All the chrome is new... very pretty.
Combine that with the looks, some music on... and you'll be ''the man'' wherever you go cruising with your family.
For the new owner there's nothing left but to enjoy every mile and to have as much fun as possible.
I can't help but get all warm and fluffy from this car!
A real cutie. I love it!
It's different from person to person. What makes something special for you?
I've handed off more than 3.500 cars. Most of which - if not all of them - I fell in love with.
Cars are my passion.
But sometimes there's a car that stands out, and for the 1950s it's definitely this one.
The colour, the nose, the chrome...
It's awesome!
