How Was Bumblebee From Transformers Originally Made?

How Was Bumblebee From Transformers Originally Made?

DCODE by Discovery:

I’m at the ultimate mega machine factory,
FXperts.
They’re the ones who built the real-life
Bumblebee robot for the Transformers movies.
But today, they’re not going to build it
for Michael Bay.
They’re going to build it for us.
John.
Hey, Nar, how you doing, buddy?
Good to see you.
Hey, nice to you see you, man.
This is John Frazier, an Oscar-winning special
effects maestro.
Step one in birthing the Bee is the concept
art.
But how do you go from a drawing to a 20-foot
monster machine?
Special effects technician James Thomas showed
me how they turn the original concept art
into something engineers can work with.
Alright, so what’s the first step in building
Bumblebee?
We get a computer file from the art department
and then they say, “This is what we want
the Bumblebee to look like.”
Is that what I’m seeing here?
That’s it right there.
You’re looking at the Bumblebee.
This Computer Aided Design, or CAD file, was
created from the imagination of an artist.
But making this robot stand, bend and flex,
was the job of the FXperts team.
Before they could start building a larger-than-life
robot, they needed director Michael Bay’s
approval.
So, James created a workable computer model
and hit print.
Alright, cool, so you’re going to show me
the printer?
Let’s go ahead and show you the printer.
Okay.
Yeah.
Great.
Only this is the coolest printer in the world.
This 3-D printing process starts with specialised
software that chops a CAD drawing into thousands
of tiny layers.
Then inside the body of the printer, an inkjet
cartridge deposits a liquid polymer over an
ultra-fine bed of powder or plaster.
The selected areas of colored ink harden the
powder creating a cross section of the model.
Another layer of powder is swept on top and
the inkjet continues to print the model, layer
by layer.
Okay, I’ll help you a little bit here.
Shake it off a little?
Yeah, shake it, give it a little jiggle.
There you go.
Okay, that’s pretty clean, right?
You did good.
All right.
Once the robot specs are designed and approved
on the miniature version, John begins to plan
how each of the real robot’s 300 parts will
be made.
Machinists start welding the frame or skeleton
while the outer parts are molded.
Some of the finer parts will be hand-sculpted
by artists, while the larger pieces are sent
to the five-axis router.
In the meantime, a mere mortal named Dewaldt
is using things called hands to sculpt smaller
parts.
For those of you who are worried that this
foam codpiece couldn’t withstand a Decepticon
attack, fear not.
It’s just the first step in the process
of creating a mold.
For the next step, we pour silicone rubber
over the foam.
Mm, it looks scrumptious.
And carefully paint over every nook and cranny.
Once the first layer of silicone hardens,
the rest of the silicone rubber is poured
in the box.
When that hardens, the mold is set.
Next, a more flexible black rubber is poured
into the mold and Bumblebee’s codpiece comes
alive.
There’s your part.
That’s it.
Yeah, that’s it.
The infamous Bumblebee codpiece, right there.
Optimus Prime has his laser rifle, I’ve
got my chopper gun.
Instead of shooting Megatron with laser beams,
I’ll be shooting fiberglass into a rubber
mold.
It’s time to suit up and put this baby into
action.
I see, it’s starting to set now.
And now we just, we just camp that in there.
That’s good.
Okay, just like that.
So, Jim, what do you think, are we good?
Yeah.
Good.
I think this is, it looks great.
Okay, good.
We just have to wait about an hour.
We’ll come back and we’ll pull it out.
All right.
While I was modeling, molding, rubberising
and glassing, fabricators were busy erecting
the giant frame that will support Bumblebee’s
weight.
Finished parts are welded section by section
onto the frame.
You ever operated a crane before?
Once everything’s in place, it’s time
to use my years of experience playing video
games.
Using a 180-horsepower crane that can extend
over 80 feet, I’ll lift each section and
place it over the base.
Hold that, you’re right on it now, you’re
right on it.
You did it.
You made yourself your robot.
I just achieved Nerdvana.
300 parts, 2500 pounds.
It wasn’t easy.
But with the help of special effects icon
John Frazier, just like Sam Witwicky in Transformers,
I have a new best friend.
