Here's Why Chevy Dealerships are Crap

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines
Michael cologne he says 07 Acura
RDX 90,000 miles called P2263 issued a
check engine light the dealer once
replace the turbo for six grand it pulls
fine and I don't feel any difference I
can't pass inspection please help yeah
you know when you get vacuum leak or
stuff wrong with the system it won't
pass emissions testing they're trying to
say the problem is in your turbo it very
well could be but if it runs okay so
you're stuck between a rock and a hard
place find a mechanic like me maybe he
could just reset it drive it a little
and if it'll pass the emissions test
then go get it tested right away I do
that for customers all the time when he
got some nagging thing that's gonna cost
a fortune but it runs okay a lot of
times you can reset it if it's got some
kind of a vacuum leak at least just
patch it with duct tape or something you
just take duct tape up if you want as
long as it runs okay you know there's
always ways to get around stuff if four
car runs perfectly fine door somebody's
trying to rip you for that kind of money
now if you do have to replace the turbo
don't pay 6 grand don't go to a dealer
you can get refurbished ones from many
places all over the world online and
replace it with a recondition one this
places that will take yours and
refurbish it for you Greg says Scotty
is a 2.7 liter EcoBoost a good reliable
engine over time understand what
EcoBoost is it means that it's GDI
gasoline injection with insane
high-pressure spraying of fuel directly
in the engine and also turbochargers
which brings more air in the engine so
there's more pressure in the engine and
guess what the more pressure the fast or
something will wear out over time if you
took that same engine and it was just a
normal engine with fuel injection and no
turbos and drove them both in the same
vehicle the one that's the EcoBoost is
gonna wear out faster and it's just the
way that it goes strain more they're
gonna wear out faster they work fine for
you know usually the first few years
100,000 miles or more
but eventually it will wear out fast to
realize that if you're the type of
person to trade your vehicle in every
100,000 miles your style you probably be
happy with but if you want really really
long-term now you better not to buy that
complex stuff Senya treasure like says
when should I change all the fluids in my
2014 Durango Hemi I only drive 5,000
miles annually well oil it doesn't
matter its mileage and/or age so you
want to change the engine at once a year
use good synthetic oil change it once
here that's fine the rest of the stuff
you're probably gonna go more by time
than mileage like I would change the
transmission fluid but if you only
driving 5,000 miles a year I change it
once every five or six years yeah and
the coolant you go by the not the
mileage but the year like a few at that
Toyota hoat coolant that's good for up
to seven years the Dodge coolant I
believe the factory stuff is good for
five years find out how long it is and
then change it by the years not the
mileage because things wear out over
time
find out what time for each and change
it at that time instead of the mileage
because you're not putting on the
mileage they still degrade over time
specially the engine oil, J Texas 1974
live free or die Scotty can you
tell me how long you can drive a car
with a failing or bad torque converter
thanks well of course that depends on
how bad the torque converter is yeah I
got customers with torque converters
that are weak that drive them for years
and years and years in my 94 celcia has
an automatic transmission the torque
converter is weak but it was a weak when
I bought it used and it's still weak and
I still drive it the only problem with
that is it shakes a lot in drive so when
you're driving if you leave it and drive
the engine shakes and idle I just put it
neutral and it runs smooth this can be
so I Drive it that way I really don't
care I'm not gonna take the transmission
off just to change the torque converter
and if it still works like that who
cares but there are torque converters
that physically fall apart when they
start making noise or when the gears
start to slam into gear when you're
driving then they're not gonna let us
talk that long it depends on how badly
worn they are cuz they will wear in
different models in different ways some
of them just have bad welds GM had some with bad welds
when the welds break then it starts
falling apart clang and then you got to
change it sooner than later or it will
destroy a bunch of other stuff Garcia says
Scotty I was a feeling driving on GT
Mustang 65 I've been 2005 in a Celica
2002 I feel like you oh yeah yeah the
old cars the fun to drive they're real
cars that's said
they're not like a modern car you get
turn the key and take off and that's all
you got to think about stuff that's 65
GT that I was showing it's got a hand
choke you gotta start it up play with
the chock a little let it warm up a few
minutes before you drive it seriously
and you know it's a standard
transmission so you gotta shift gears
and it's an old one so that's the clutch
it's relatively stepped you got to be
used to pushing down on that hard clutch
with your left foot the only thing I
ever drove this stiffer than that was a
customer had a Corvette and that you
he had to use both feet on a
clutch pedal to get it down it was so
hard to push it down on that Corvette
they were notorious for having sticky
clutch pedals but you know it's another
experience you're actually being part of
the Machine and you feel it and you get
feedback and bumps and it's a real
driving experience you know if you're
the type of person that just wants a
smooth thing definitely get a new one
don't get it old one, station money says
I got a 07 Ford Focus that has a
pinging sound under load when I use 87
octane using 89 there's no pinging how
can I get it to stop pinging when using
87 octane you know the problem is it's
12 years old
it's just worn with the higher octane
gas I mean you're better just to use it
because all kinds of things are going on
there it's probably that your timing
belt your timing chain is worn somewhat
the engine has a little carbon in it I
mean if you want to try my advice would
be paying mechanic like me to carbon
clean your engine because if there's
carbon buildup that increases the
compression ratio and you need to higher
test gas so it doesn't ping sometimes on
those just having them carbon cleaned
then they'll run normal on the cheaper
gas I tried that burst they make the
most logical thing to do
keoki Tara's says Scotty I changed the
sway bar links on my 08 Pontiac g5
but it still rattles when I hit bumps
what could be wrong you change the sway
bar links
those are links at the end right the
sway bar itself has to hold downs they
have rubber bushings on them check the
rubber bushings they could be worn out
too but of course realize there are a
zillion things that can make rattling
noise on a suspension system jack it up and
pull on it and hope you can duplicate the
noise now if you can't I have a video
called finding the source of car noises
watch that video and with that machine
if you don't want to buy one you're
gonna use one on eBay for like 50 60
bucks or a new one 410 bucks it will
pinpoint any sound in a car but check
the bushings first you changed the
links on the end of the bushings are
worn it'll still rattle around when you
hit bumps, res says toyota oem coolant
or third party pink
acceptable it's okay to mix different
brands of engine coolant all right well I always try to use the same thing but what's
in them is what counts and from my
experience I look around all the pink
and red coolant that I've ever found was
whole coolant hybrid organic acid
technology called the new style one that
Toyota's use and as long as it's hoat
coolant you can mix them it's perfectly
fine just like any olden days you didn't
care if you use impressed on coolant
factory GM coolant whatever as long as
it was the same type the older type
coolant was called inorganic acid
technology IAT and the new one is OAT
organic acid technology and the real
fancy ones like Toyota's are Hoat hybrid
organic acid technology as long as you
keep the same oats or hoat coolant in it
it's fine you can mix them, mike says
Scotty my 2015 Mazda 3 left front wheel
vibrates at 25 to 35 but it goes away at
a higher speed what can cause that you
got sympathetic vibrations in there
odds are to be rebalanced or the tiger
might just be shot go to a good place
where they balance tires have them check
the balancing of the tire if it's off
balance that can do that or it's a tire
itself a shot that often happens when
they're made of various belt wound
around in a circle and if the belts
break internally then they're no longer
perfectly round and at a certain speed
they'll go like mad but don't want to
get spinning faster it expands out and
becomes perfectly round again so had the tire check praise just needs to be
but if the tires crap pink albino your
tire because that will do different
things at different speeds cuz it's
rubber and can stretch and change as it
speeds up it's not like a man on a solid
steel where the speed doesn't change the
shape, Steven Mayer says Scotty are you
stoned dusted sunglasses no I'm blind as
a bat if I take them off I am blinded
and I have studio lights pointing at me
so you can see me otherwise you wouldn't be able to see me all that well I put
them on I don't look as old it's a
show business thing with sunglasses on
you don't look as old but now I'm not
stoned I haven't done that stuff since
college and that was let's see 42 years
ago that's what I graduated, game says
Scotty I have a 2010 Mazda 3 the sound
stopped
I had the Bose package mechanic told me
to replace an amp or get a new radio why
are the speakers what should I do
yes when you buy a vehicle with a fancy
stereo system and it breaks often either
to get new parts hardly anybody ever
fixes them right or to replace the whole
thing with a factory unit cost a fortune
you're better just going aftermarket I
do it in all my cars because the
aftermarket stuff these days every two
years they're they work twice as well
and it cost half as much so your carts a
few years old
you put modern stereo in sounds tons
better and it costs pretty nothing
compared to the original
so do that just get another new one
research what particular ones you want
like if you don't have an android and you want to
put an android in now if you want an
Android there's good androids out there now
for a little was doing her 50 bucks
don't buy the $80 androids they stink
I've tried them out but the more
expensive ones they're pretty good
androids that are easy to wire it I got
a video on that it's it's not that hard
to do,
so if you never want to miss another one
of my new car repair videos, remember to
ring that Bell

Why Ford And Other American Cars Don’t Sell In Japan

Why Ford And Other American Cars Don’t Sell In Japan

CNBC:

When it comes to cars, Americans
seem to love the Japanese.
But the Japanese don't seem
to love Americans back.
Japanese brands sell remarkably well
in the United States.
Several of the best-selling automakers in
America are from Japan, and
their products seem to dominate entire
segments in sales and critical
acclaim. Japanese automakers sell so
many cars in the U.S.
that they actually employ vast numbers
of American workers in factories
around the country.
Japanese automakers actually build a third of
all the vehicles made in the
U.S. But the Japanese don't seem
to be interested in America's SUVs,
pickup trucks, muscle cars or just
about any vehicle made by Detroit.
Ford left Japan entirely in 2017.
General Motors keeps a presence there, but
it is tiny — the largest U.S.
automaker sold only 700 cars
in Japan in 2018.
And people are divided as to why
and what, if anything, should be done
about it.
President Donald Trump has criticized the
imbalance, but so have U.S.
automotive trade associations, who
blame Japanese protectionism.
While there are no
Japanese tariffs on U.S.
imports, a number of critics say there
are all kinds of technical barriers
that make it harder for U.S.
companies to sell in Japan.
Here in the United States, when we
set regulations for fuel economy or
safety or communications standards or whatever,
all of the automakers that
sell and produce in the United
States are party to that conversation.
In Japan, it's a much more
closed process for regulatory compliance.
It's "these are the rules and
you will meet the rules."
Japanese producers have input into that
and suppliers, but it's pretty
closed to any external companies that
would be doing business there.
But some industry experts say
that really isn't the problem.
Instead, the reasons U.S.
cars are so rare in Japan, which
is the world's third-largest car market,
have more to do with Japanese
consumer tastes, the abiding if outdated
stereotypes the Japanese have about the
quality of American cars, and the
very different way customers shop
for vehicles in Japan.
It is first important to note
that Japanese brands all but completely
dominate local roads.
More than 95 percent of all cars
sold in the country are Japanese.
Imports make up the balance and
most of those are higher-end European
luxury vehicles and sports cars.
This is partly because the
Japanese have pretty specific needs.
For one thing, space
is incredibly tight.
Wildly popular in Japan are these
so-called Kei cars, which are tiny
vehicles preferred by drivers who have
to thread their way through narrow
streets and crowded cities.
Kei Cars alone make up
40 percent of the Japanese
market and U.S.
automakers don't make them.
Americans, on the other hand, tend
to excel in making big vehicles,
particularly pickup trucks and
large sport utilities.
In recent years, American automakers have
scaled back or even entirely
killed off their own lines of
compact vehicles, which are often still
bigger than their
Japanese counterparts.
In fact, many of the Japanese vehicles
sold in America — from sedans such
as the Toyota Camry all the way up
to the pickups — are not even
particularly popular in Japan.
All three Detroit automakers have less
than 1 percent market share.
One of the bestsellers, Jeep, sells about
10,000 vehicles in Japan a year.
The Japanese car buying experience would
also likely shock many Americans,
who often view a trip to the
dealership as one of life's necessary evils.
Much of Japanese business culture is
built around service and hospitality,
and auto dealerships
are no exception.
Japanese dealerships offer customers nearly
white glove service, and the
way buyers choose cars is entirely
different from the traditional buying
experience in the U.S.
Whereas American shoppers will often choose
a car from what is available
on a dealer lot, Japanese buyers can
often custom-build a car out of a
catalog and then have it made for
them in a matter of weeks.
A strong local supply chain and
local factories allow Japanese automakers
to do this.
Furthermore, quality of service
is often quite high.
Dealerships frequently have amenities such
as cafes and complimentary car
washes. They will also follow up
with customers sometimes even years after
a purchase.
Foreign automakers overall have had difficulty
adapting to this way of
selling. Moreover, the Japanese have
longstanding perceptions of American
cars as inefficient and unreliable.
This somewhat outdated view originates in
the decades from the 1960s
through the 1980s, when Japanese
brands were ascending and American
automakers were plagued with criticism and
scandal over vehicles such as
the Chevrolet Vega, the AMC Gremlin,
the Ford Pinto and the Chevrolet
Corvair.

And though American manufacturers have
made far more fuel-efficient engines
in recent years, the U.S.
has historically made some gas guzzlers
when compared with cars made
elsewhere.
Yeah, I think there is
a hangover for American vehicles.
You know, what does an American
car say about you in Japan.
That baggage is carried with that.
Meanwhile, the Japanese rose to power in
the auto industry in large part on
their reputation for building solid, efficient
cars that don't break down.
Of course, many observers note that American
autos have done a lot to
close the reliability gap over the years,
and cars overall are able to log
far more miles on the road than
they did even a decade ago.
And U.S.
automakers are adamant that they would be
better able to compete in Japan
if the country removes barriers
that make doing business difficult.
The trouble for Detroit is that Japan
is just one of the international
markets where U.S.
automakers have struggled.
All three Detroit automakers have had
challenges in South America and
Europe. While China which is the world's
largest car market could become a
tougher place to do business
with slowing economic growth, increased
competition, and trade disputes.

If something doesn't change, U.S.
automakers could become just that: American
companies that sell trucks and
SUVs to Americans.

Illinois Auto Lease Tax Changes, New Auto Lease Tax Law : Stasek Chevrolet

Illinois Auto Lease Tax Changes, New Auto Lease Tax Law : Stasek Chevrolet

Bill Stasek Chevrolet:

Hi, this is Brent Baker with Bill Stasek Chevrolet.
Illinois has a new program out for
leasing cars.
We want to make sure you're familiar and
comfortable with it so you better
understand how to save money.
Now this tax structure is going to benefit
you quite a bit
and you may even think about leasing when you never thought about it before.
Here I've got a 2015 Tahoe LTZ
with an MSRP of $65,555. Now for
2014 taxes
if we look at a purchase it's $5,446.74 and

and a lease is going to be the same amount.
Now a 39 month lease
the tax that you pay per payment is
about $139.66

Now for 2015, purchase tax is going to stay the same
but with the
lease it's dropped considerably
$2,911.35. So that means the tax that you're
paying per payment
is $74.65. That totals
$65 a month in savings
but the most important thing is
keeping that $2500
back in your pocket
of that total savings that's not going to
the state but instead staying with you.
If you have any additional questions on
how to lease a new vehicle
or the structure of this tax, please
let us know
at 847-537-7000.
Whether it's on an Equinox, Sonic, Cruze, Traverse,
it doesn't have to be a Tahoe, we're here to help. Again that number is 847-537-7000.

Here’s Why Car Dealerships are Scumbags

Here’s Why Car Dealerships are Scumbags

Scotty Kilmer:

rev up your engines wind 5280 says Scottie I bought a new car from dealer I purchased
it gives a lifetime powertrain warranty
these warranties lifetime powertrain
warranty you know what does that really
mean
theoretically it means that if the
engine of the transmission goes out
they're gonna fix it free but from my
experience they're usually not worth the
paper that they're printed on if it was
even printed anymore because they have
so many disclaimers they'll say stuff
like if your engine goes out where you
didn't change your oil enough oh you
overheated the engine and that's why the
engine broke they got so many outs that
they can go that they're not going to
fix it or they'll say stuff like well
that's normal wear so let's say the
transmission shifting really poorly
they'll just say well that's normal
wear as they get old they shift poorly
we're not gonna you know rebuild your
transmission or give you a $5,000
transmission under the warranty most of
that stuff isn't worth the paper that
it's printed on and when you get
something like limited powertrain
warranty you have no idea what they're
actually cover and in my experience I
think customers that have those and 80%
of the time they bring it to me and I
look at it I caught the company and they
say oh no we're not gonna cover that so
don't really listen to that especially
in a used vehicle you know things are
gonna break it there's no way they're
gonna fix all that stuff for free most
of it it's just total lies from the
people that are selling you the stuff
where it says Scotty which one has more
plastic the Kardashians or BMWs billion
any I guess there would be a Kardashian
who's driving a BMW that would
definitely have the most plastic but
BMWs have been using plastic for decades
now I got a customer's still got a 1980s
BMW and that thing doesn't have much
plastic on it at all
modern ones and it's cheap plastic and it
doesn't hold up over time the heat from
like a the cooling system and everything
in this plastic and the intake manifold
with all these plastic parts on it that
crack and break that's the big reason I
tell people don't buy a BMW I had a
mechanic friend once I saw him at a
parts store so I was going he says oh
man look I just got this beautiful BMW
one of my customers was tired of it so I
bought it from him and I'm thinking
ah he does know much about BMWs I saw him about a year later to say I'm on a
part store I said how's that BMW going
Joe and he said Oh Scotty that BMW I
got rid of it a month ago was just
killing me with parts for all that
plastic stuff and this was a mechanic so
stay away from both the Kardashians and
BMWs if you don't want to deal with plastic, 2jg says Scotty what do you
think about Ford Expedition oh wait
80,000 kilometers for 6k people say they
break down when they get old like
200,000 yeah it's for expeditions ages
they're high-tech luxury SUVs big
monstrosity and they do have to have
electronic work done on them generally
as they age
you only got 80,000 kilometers that's
like what Hannah 44,000 miles that's
nothing $6,000 imagine what somebody
paid for it when it was new
outrageous it's awful mechanic checks it
out and says yes that's the real
knowledge yes it's in decent shape
buy it if you want a big
monstrosity that you know uses a lot of
gas it could be okay because generally
yeah like you say if you're talking
about 200,000 kilometers yeah that's
generally when they start to have
problems we say when they get more than
a hundred thousand my husband or than
that but still yeah then they would
start but for the mileage that it has
you know you can go another 120 thousand
kilometers not put much in it go right
and buy it rim says I got a friend
with a 2014 Accord to push button lights
up in the dash but it won't turn over and
the battery just fine I can just about
guarantee you it needs a starter on
those 2014 of course they put the
crappiest smallest little starters on
those things and if it's a four-cylinder
one which I'm assuming it is cuz most of
them around me are you gotta take off
part of the intake manifold to get the
starter have another brilliant design
but they just built those starters
poorly I changed out scores of them in
those things and odds are it just needs
a starter it was a bad design a poorly
made start or so go get one and my
advice if you can find a new one put a
new one in because otherwise if you go
to a discount auto parts stores you get
one of their crappy starters that Honda
made that has been rebuilt
well a rebuilt one they're gonna last
less than the brand new one did so if
you can find a brand new one it's
generally going to
last longer than a rebuilt on that
particular Honda because they're
notorious for breaking down in the first
place
timber won't fall 29th says Scotty I've
been noticing the prices of the Ford Crown Vic police interceptors been going up
lately what's up here
all right well they're not gonna be
making them anymore so people that like
those vehicles the big old crown vics
hey they want them they know they're not
gonna be making him anymore and so the
prices are going up money used once
and there's always a certain amount of
people that like a certain vehicle a
couple years ago Porsche decided they
were gonna make a thousand super cars
and they were going for nine hundred
something thousand dollars almost a
million bucks right and all the other
supercar people who make 50 a year 120 a year they said ah poor she's gonna lose
their shirt on that one how they gonna
find a thousand people they're gonna buy
these super car Porsches right well they
sold them all before they even had one
completely built because there are that
many million and billionaires have
wanted to buy this poor super car so
there's a certain amount of people that
want a Crown Vic like that so the prices
is gonna start going off since they're
not producing anymore it's the old law
of supply and demand sue asks hey if I'm
using full synthetic engine I should
have continued to do so for ever yes you
want to stick with a particular type of
oil it works for you keep using it now
they are supposed to have certain
additives they have minimum requirements
here in the United States but they're
all slightly different so let's say I
like Castro so using Castro synthetic
oil I would continue to use it as long
as you have the car why mess with
success why change from one or another
but I mean let's say you go to
Walmart and buy their synthetic oil all
the time and it works fine just keep
buying it you don't want to switch and
the worst thing to do is to switch from
synthetic to non synthetic or for non
synthetic to synthetic go back and forth
because really if something works in
your engine you should leave it alone
and of course especially say got an
older car an excuse normal oil do not
switch a high mileage old car from
normal to synthetic because I have seen
just because it flows better I've seen
leaks I've ever seen noises occurred
because of the difference you know so
stick to one type of oil and leave it
there if it works perfectly fine there's
no reason to change
13:45 says I got an 06 Jeep Liberty
sometimes it starts
fine after a driver for a fuel won't
start I don't after you starting fluid
to started what could be wrong
mainly that would be your fuel pump is
starting to go out or you got a bad fuel
pump real those things are notorious for
having fuel pump really failures so I'd
say change the fuel pump relay first
that's where it starts but if it's not
that when it doesn't start pressure test
a fuel pump
normally vehicles are the other way
around they're hard to start when
they're cold but when they're warm they
start right up or if they start up
firing when they're called and then
they're warm they don't start normally
it's they're flooding out from fuel
leaking but yours isn't flooding out
because adding starting fluid would
flood out even more it's not getting any
fuel check the relay first just change
that they're cheap you can do that your
stuff easy and if it's not that then
have the fuel pump pressure tested and
pray it's the fuel pump going out and
not the computer that activates or the
crazy wiring and those jeeps that are
notorious for having electronic gremlins
biomechanoid says I'd like to be a bit
independent to want to rely on mechanics
for trivial jobs and mechanics around
here aren't very good I don't have my
own oil and coolant changes but I don't
have a garage and I parked outside on
the street I can't Jack them up so I'm
looking for alternatives can you use
pumps to suck the oil up but your engine
off you can't i personally believe in
jacking them up and unscrewing the drain
plug and getting it all up but take an
example audis they got a whole bunch of
sheet metal on the bottom of the car to
make them hear dynamic and it would take an hour to get all that crap off to
change the oil even at the Audi dealers
they tell you the factory thing is to
suck the oil out you go to an already
dealer to get an oil change they just
take the dipstick out and they stick a
tube in and they suck the oil out and
change it that way you know if you want
to do it that way you know you're still
gonna get more crud changing the plug
but if you can't get that and you get a
good one to suck it out do it but the
first time you do it do this read what
your oil change specs are and let's say
it says 5.3 quarts when you suck it out
pour that into graduated containers and
see if it's the same amount that comes
out then you'll know well you got almost
all of it out so who cares but if it
says 5.3 quarts and you only get four
it's not working right and then Jack it
up to change the oil but if it does you
can do it like I say they already deal
is that's what they do now at the
dealers
they don't have to take the whole bottom of the car off just kind of amazes me that's Germans
for you they're a little weird when it
comes to design and things, be gentle says
Scotty is the CVT in a
2020 Toyota Corolla reliable
2020 I'm assuming it is because my son
bought one last year it's two years old
now and it's been alt reliable he was
kind of leery because I told about CVT
transmissions but he found a nice
Corolla asked with the CVT and he lost
and he drives hard
he loves the acceleration and he said he
actually gets better gas mileage than
the ratings were so I have to say that
they'd been rely bought I'm assuming the
20/20 is gonna be as reliable as the
previous models but I shocked me cuz he
drives like a maniac and he said he's
got plenty of pickup Toyota makes their
own transmissions Aisin so they're
pretty good and building automated
transmissions the only time that they
messed up is with their 8-speed
automatic they didn't get the software
and stuff right and a shift kind of
weird and they still run it's not like
they stopped but they've had some
problems with those
so if you never want to miss another one
of my new car repair videos, remember
to ring that Bell

Don Wessel Honda - About Us - Legendary Service - Car Dealerships in Springfield MO

Don Wessel Honda:

Legendary Service means we
take care of our customers
no matter what.
We go the extra mile.
Every day. Day in and day
out. Putting your best foot forward
everywhere in the dealership.
And being honest and
straightforward with the customer.
Making sure that you treat them
like you'd want to be treated.
Legendary Service is
something I came up with
to honor dad's legacy and honor the fact
that he truly believed in service.
That was always Mr.
Wessel's number one goal.
That's the way we've always been trained,
and that's the way we've always performed.
There's a way to do
business and a way not.
And that's the way we were
taught with the Wessels.
You either do it the right
way or you don't do it.
You instill your
practices and your beliefs
in something, and that's
what makes you legendary.
You walk in. You have
a friendly salesperson
that greets you. That's
here to genuinely help you
and get you the best experience possible.
We want them to feel like
they're a part of our team.
And I think that goes a
long way in making someone
really have a good experience
with buying a Honda.
With Mr. Wessel's way,
we're still wearing ties,
because that's the way Mr.
Wessel wanted us to dress.
We're legendary because
we're continuing what
Mr. Wessel started, and
that's his reputation,
and we're gonna exceed that reputation.
One of the reasons that we
do what we do is it's easier.
It's easier to tell the truth.
It's easier to be polite.
It's easier to follow the Golden Rule.
So why not do it the easy way?

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado the Best Silverado Ever? | First Drive | Edmunds

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado the Best Silverado Ever? | First Drive | Edmunds

Edmunds:

TRAVIS LANGNESS:
Welcome to Wyoming.
I'm Travis Langness
for Edmunds.com,
and this is the all-new
2019 Chevrolet Silverado.
Basically, it's redesigned from
the ground up, from the frame,
to the body, to the powertrains.
It's bigger.
It's longer.
It's wider.
But we want to know if it's
the best Silverado Chevy's ever
made, so we're going to
take it out for a drive.

So we're in the
mountains in Wyoming
and we're driving around
in the new Silverado 1500.
And really, this feels
like an updated Silverado.
It doesn't feel
completely redesigned.
It feels really familiar.
So what's changed
about the Silverado?
The frame is built using
different materials.
It's a longer wheelbase.
It's longer from nose to
tail by almost two inches.
Pretty much all of the towing
improvements across the board
for the Silverado
come from the fact
that the truck is
450 pounds lighter
than the previous generation.
Now, that's coming
from differences
in steel, the aluminum hood,
aluminum tailgate, aluminum
doors, differences in
the strength of steel
in the chassis.
They took 80 pounds out
of the frame, another
80 pounds out of the
bed of the truck,
so instead of one
stamping, they've
used three different
pieces, which
also makes the bed of the truck
as much as seven inches wider
in the bed.
And also, you're looking
at the first up and down
power tailgate in
any full-size truck.
Kind of a no-brainer
on trucks these days.
Everybody's using a
power lift gate in SUVs.
Why haven't we
done it on a truck?
Under the hood is
the 5.3 liter V8.
Now, people from the last
generation Silverado,
if you own one of those, you'll
think, oh, so same engine.
Well, yes and no.
There is a 5.3 available with
the old six-speed automatic
transmission, but
the one we're driving
has the new
eight-speed automatic.
And it's the updated version
of that 5.3 liter V8.
So basically, what you get is
a different fuel management
system that Chevy says
will increase fuel economy.
And it-- for my
butt [? dyno-- ?]
hasn't changed the way the truck
drives much, which is good.
Gives you good power uphill,
gives you a good burst
as you're going
to pass somebody.
But what has changed
with the eight-speed
is it's quiet in here.
There's several
other power trains.
So you can get a diesel.
You can get the base V6.
You can get this V8 or
the six-speed transmission
with the older version of the
V8, different fuel management.
And you can get the 6.2 liter,
as well as that turbo four
cylinder.
If you don't need as much
towing or hauling capability,
that turbo four cylinder,
that may be the motor for you.
For me, I'd probably go
with the 5.3 or the 6.2.
They feel a little bit better,
have a little bit more thrust.
We don't have the
optional 22-inch wheels
on this truck, which
is absolutely something
I would avoid, because with
the standard wheel and tire
package, ride comfort's
great in this.
These seats are not the
high-end leather seats.
They're cloth, and
they feel great.
Going up a mountain road,
they feel just fine.
The split heating
function works great.
And really, if you're going to
go on a 1600 mile road trip,
tow a trailer, and take
your family on vacation,
this is an easy place to do it.
Also, this center
console comes up.
Take it up real quick, so
you can have a third person
up front sitting here.
Chevy did say that
the drag has changed.
As their dynamics
have gotten better,
drag has decreased with
the front end redesign.
And that's a small marginal
increase in fuel economy,
along with what will probably
be marginal increases
from the eight-speed automatic.
This one is, I believe,
19 MPG combined
with the 5.3 and
the eight-speed.
Along these roads-- they're
not perfect, obviously,
these aren't highly maintained
city roads-- the Silverado
feels really good.
It's not a bouncy ride quality.
Big sharp impacts aren't
really making their way
into the cabin.
Everything feels pretty
well-insulated from underneath,
especially when you've
got a good amount of tire
sidewall, which this truck has.
There's not a lot of body roll.
If you're worried about ride
quality on a pickup truck,
this one is doing just fine.

So this is the interior
of the new Silverado.
It's not so much a redesign
as much as it is an evolution.
For starters, we'll go with
this big monolith of a center
console.
This is just one giant piece.
It's not as high-content
as it could be.
We're in kind of a mid
trim level, something
that's a little bit
more typical for buyers.
And basically, you've got
auto stop start function.
You can put the
tailgate down here.
Traction control.
A nice little button that
puts all four windows down
at the same time.
There's a couple
of buttons missing.
There are some things that we
could have on this interior.
There's no plug here, but
on the higher trim levels
you do get that full
three-prong plug.
We've got one
USBC, one USB port.
It's got Apple
CarPlay, Android Auto.
And it's got a really
crisp look to it.
This one is the same size
as the previous generation,
but it's a little
bit nicer looking.
It's a little bit crisper.
Graphics, it's
really easy to read.
You've got the swipe from
one side, swipe to the other.
You can control most of
the stuff happening here.
The steering wheel
is much the same.
The TFT, the center
driver display here,
is a little bit better,
and everything is easier
to see at a moment's
glance when you're
looking down from the road.
Super helpful when
you're towing or hauling
and you just want to
spot your temperature
or spot your oil pressure.
It's definitely a good display.
And then Chevy has moved
over here some of the stuff
that you use for towing,
to the left of the driver.
There's a little
toggle here that you
can change between
sport mode or they've
got a little dynamic
racecar flag, and tow mode--
changes the shift
schedules, things like that.
Then you've got the
selector between
two-wheel and four-wheel drive.
You've got the terrain
selector to tell the truck
if you want hill descent control
if you're on rock or sand.
Then you've got the
controls for the lights,
and most of the
stuff over there.
And pretty much,
this is what you
get inside the interior
of all the Silverados,
and it's a really
intuitive layout.
It's not fancy.
It's a lot of new stuff, but not
a completely different design
that you have to get
used to something new.
Now, with that said,
this mid-level content
does have some plastic
materials that aren't awesome,
but really the touch points,
those things are good.
They feel sturdy.
One of the nice things
that GM has, Chevy as well,
is these split
level seat heating.
So you can heat just your back,
or your back and your butt.
Heating just your back is
perfect for long road trips.
Anybody with back pain
should demand this feature
be put in every car.
It makes the seating so
much more comfortable.
It's fantastic.
Overall, this interior
is a likeable place,
and definitely somewhere
I can see myself sitting
for a long time on a road trip.
So now we're in the
backseat of the Silverado
and it's huge back here.
There is an additional three
inches of rear leg room.
The truck itself is only 1.7
inches longer, nose to tail,
but they put a lot of that,
and then some, into the rear.
So four adults can sit totally
comfortably, probably a fifth,
maybe even a sixth when
you get that third seat up
in the front.
But if you've got
four six-footers,
there's tons of space
back here for everybody.
And it's pretty simple,
pretty standard back here.
A couple of USB ports, couple
of vents, which is nice.
Keeps the air flowing back here.
These seats are similarly firm
to the center seat up front.
But it's a 60/40
split back here.
And it's really easy
to fold these up.
So this one just
quick up, quick down.
There's no straps to pull on.
No handles.
And then also, there's some
pretty cool features back here.
This is typical, the center
console with the cup holders,
not new in any way.
But then this side seat
opens up and you have access
to behind the seat.
And the seat materials are
similarly nice to the front,
that same checkerboard pattern.
Pretty flat across the
bottom and the back.
There's not a lot of
bolstering back here,
but the cushioning is good.
This angle's not too bad.
It'd be nice if it were a
little bit further slanted back,
but it's decent for a road trip.

So we've spent all day driving
the new 2019 Silverado.
And basically, what
we've discovered
is that Chevy has taken a good
product and made it better.
This new truck is more capable.
It's more quiet on the inside.
There's more space
in the back seat.
You can tow more.
And there's that
wide array of engines
that we talked about,
which will make
it more economical and better
towing in the long run.
It generally feels
like a good refresh,
but they've added some
good updates to it.
But if you're
asking the question
is it the best Silverado that
Chevy has ever made, well sure,
but only by a small margin.
