1963 Chevrolet Impala by Johnny Gonzales - LOWRIDER Roll Models Ep. 37

1963 Chevrolet Impala by Johnny Gonzales - LOWRIDER Roll Models Ep. 37

Lowrider Roll Models:

(beat plays)
- For me, low riding is
an artistic representation of resistance.
You get to show this is who I am.
This is what I stand for.
And I'm kind of claiming that space
while I'm rolling in my vehicle.
(slow beat)
(slow beat)
I've always been part of low
riding, since I can remember.
My mom used to tell me
about how my grandpa,
when he came over from
Mexico, he would dress up like
Pachuco, and he would
drive in his old Chevies,
just so that folks would
consider him Chicano, right?
Like a Mexican-American,
and they went (mumbles).
You know, a lot of my uncles, my tíos,
they always would low ride.
It was part of who they were growing up.
And hearing the conversations, right?
Of the cars my dad would paint in the 70s,
or the cars that my uncle Bill,
and being able to drive and
listen to oldies was priceless.
So for me, it was just
kinda like second nature
to get into it.
(funky music)
My car is a 1963 Chevy Impala
Super Sport convertible.
It's got a Laurel green paint job,
which is a classic, original
color for that year.
However, this one has a little
bit more fire mist in it.
So, when the sun hits it, it
really brightens up the car.
It's got a dark green canvas
top, it's a custom top.
Along with a light green tint
glass window in the back.
I've had the honor of working
with Matalo Pinstriping.
Jonathan Matalo came down and
he did two color pinstriping.
He also did some gold leaf on it.
The car has Center Gold Daytons, 72 spoke,
original straight from the factories.
They're triple stamped Daytons.
Underneath the hood, we have 350 engine
with a 350 transmission.
With some (mumbles)
specialty valve covers,
along with the serpentine head.
So the interior is a light green vinyl,
with the original pattern,
with the Dakota Digital dash,
along with the name of
the car, Paradise Gold.
That was pinstriped on the car too.
(slow beat)
It's got power windows all
throughout the vehicle,
power quarters and power vents.
I have a custom air set up by Hoffle's.
When we got the airbags
done, we were able to
have the car lay belly,
which means that the frame
touches the ground when I lay it out.
So when I park the car, I always slam it
all the way to the floor, or I just lift
the front and drop the back.
(slow beat)
I also have a custom sound system,
with two Rockford
Fosgate, 12 inch speakers,
and then two Rockford Fosgate amps.
I needed to keep that 90s look.
I have a custom engraved plaque that says
Coachella Khalifa's Car Club,
which has a lot of meaning to me because
it's the city where I'm from.
We have about five members
in our club, with my
Uncle Reuben being the
founding member of the club.
He ran a license plate that says
"Coachella" since the early 1980s.
So he was repping Coachella
before anyone even knew
what the city was.
What better name than
Coachella to name our car club?
(somber piano)
I was born in San Diego in the early 80s.
My parents both went to San Diego State.
My mom majored in Liberal Studies,
and my father in Linguistics.
My parents fell in love and had me.
Six years later, they had my
two brothers, Alex and Diego.
My father ended up moving
into construction and then
eventually moved towards being
a professional photographer
for the last 30 plus years.
My mom has been an educator
for the last 28 years.
Then in 1986, we moved to Coachella,
and I've been there ever since.
In 1992, I kept bugging my parents.
I want an Impala.
When I was 12 years old,
I was able to purchase
a Low Rider Magazine in 1992,
for the Cinco de Mayo issue.
It was a Laurel green
Super Sport '63 Impala.
And I was like, "That's my car."
Couple months later,
my parents purchased a
'63 Super Sport hard top for me at 12.
By the time I was 16, I
really started to mess around
on the streets a lot.
Unfortunately, I was shot twice.
Once in the shoulder, once in the neck.
I just remember seeing my parents,
and seeing that they said you know,
"You can do better than this."
What was interesting was,
they couldn't find a way to punish me,
'cause I was just wild and out.
So they took away my
heart, they sold my car.
I really didn't understand
why they were doing that.
They understood that it
was a bigger vision for me.
My mom being an educator, was able
to put me in the right classes.
She was able to make sure
that I had the right grades.
And in the 90s, they were
really pushing college,
and I was able to apply to school,
and I still didn't wanna go.
They ended up dropping me off and said,
"I ain't gonna pick you up for a month."
I went to school at Cal State North Ridge,
still thinking about all
the things I went through,
really started to get
settled down at school.
My dad called me one day and he goes,
"I got a '60 Impala for you."
That was my first low rider I purchased
with my own money.
(slow beat)
Growing up, I never had a
teacher that looked like me.
The negative narratives
that were taught to me
were that I wasn't smart
enough, I wasn't good enough.
That I wasn't gonna go anywhere.
And these were the comments
I was receiving on the daily
from my teachers.
I don't think I deserved those comments,
and I don't think any student or any kid
deserves those comments.
When I went to college,
I was as a history major.
And I remember being a
history major and I was like,
"What am I doing with my life?"
And I was kind of lost, in a way.
It wasn't until I started
taking Chicano study courses
that it really constructed
a different perspective
of education for me.
Then I was able to really
start reflecting and
unpacking a lot of the
things that I experienced
in education growing up and I was like,
this is crazy. This is
not normal, for me to
experience these things as a young kid
in the educational system.
Right after I ended
college and I graduated,
I moved right into teaching.
My mom has really kind
of laid the ground work
for me to do the work that I do.
You gotta have a good work ethic,
you gotta work hard,
but then you gotta be
consistent with your work ethic.
And in that way, you're able
to build a sense of integrity.
I've been able to learn
that from seeing my mom
do that for the last 30 years.
(upbeat guitar)
I've been at Desert Mirage High School
for the last 14 years.
I teach high school.
I teach all grades in high
school, nine through 12.
I consider myself a
Chicano studies teacher,
or an Ethics study teacher.
I wanted to kind of come
back to the neighborhood
of where I'm from.
I wanted to teach in the area,
and I wanted to tell a
different story for my students.
I don't look like a traditional teacher.
Bald-headed, I'm Chicano, I'm brown,
and I wear Nikes and Levi's.
I'm trying to be authentic to who I am.
As a teacher, I think it's
empowering for students to see
a teacher being real with them,
because they're being
real with themselves.
Many of them come from
farm working communities.
A lot of them are first
generation US citizens,
some of them are undocumented.
They're really trying to
navigate what it means
for them to reach the American dream.
So it's important that
you kind of, as a teacher,
we start to really think
about what our place is,
and in which ways can we
inspire students to really
push and strive towards
their dreams for themselves.
About five years ago, we started
this process with a couple
teaching buddies and myself.
We started pushing for Ethnic studies as
a graduation requirement,
and through my research,
I was able to find a program called
the Puente Project.
It's a four year college
preparation program for students.
We were able to develop
our own twists by embedding
Ethnic study courses in it.
We have a population of 98% Latino.
It's really important the curriculum
is reflective of the students.
And now, the Puente Program is
the largest educational
program in our school,
with 100% success rate of getting kids to
four year universities.
It was important to bring
that program, but was also
important is that it centered the student,
and the student's identity as the way of
getting them to college.
I think it's important to
understand that you have
the capacity within yourself to be great.
You may have been beaten down,
you may have been told that you're not.
Keep dreaming, keep pushing,
and at the end of the day,
be who you are and embrace yourself.
After 10 years of teaching,
really getting settled,
having the financial flexibility,
and I went after my dream vehicle.
So it's like this full
story of understanding
how low riding is
integrated into your life,
and how you're always
trying to find who you are.
And at the same time, kind
of claiming who you are.
So I think this vehicle
and embracing low riding
really puts you in that
position of understanding like,
look, you can still claim
the parts of who you are.
You can still be authentic.
You can still be real.
But you don't have to be
following that sense of
violence or negativity that
kind of ravages our community.
So for me, it means
re-transforming what it means
to low ride,
but also what it means
to come from the city.
My name is Johnny Gonzalez.
I'm an educator and I am
a low rider role model.

Amazing Original Rare Unrestored '59 Impala at Wheels In Motion Pottstown - Eastwood

Amazing Original Rare Unrestored '59 Impala at Wheels In Motion Pottstown - Eastwood

Eastwood Company:

we're downtown
Pottstown Pennsylvania at wheels in
motion this beautiful old deco building
was a car dealership 483 years and now
it's a full service collision center and
custom restoration shop
rumor has it there's some awesome
survivor cars in the back let's go
particular now the showroom here is
immaculate the cars are changed out all
the time today is restored and
unrestored Corvettes the history of this
place is unbelievable you just don't see
this anymore and it's beautifully
documented and still frame photography
on the back wall
but what we're really here to see is
untouched under restored cars from the
fifties and sixties
let's go Mike you got a real nice clean
shop here and obviously late model
collision repair mix it with a bunch of
classics including that f-body camaro
over there which is near and dear to my
heart with Zed sled project right
but tell me about the unrestored cars
what's this 63 and Palace super sport
convertible 38,000 miles original owner
he parked at 1974 and we just drag it
out of the garage and hear it
pull this bubble top 61 bubble-top i
bought it 1999 and I finally sold to my
son when he was 16 years old
you just shine it up a little bit and
foot Lancers and white walls he's
getting ready to cruise
very cool and I could stand here and
talk about these cars all day long
- when you show me the 59 show you the
59 I'll go one better
let's take it for a ride I like that
yeah
yeah
so is this manual steering power
steering power steering
yes manual brakes power steering yep
it's a 283 turbo applied and the turbo
glide doesn't have gears as three torque
converters and you won't feel shift it's
more just a transition between each
converter so all those ads in popular
science magazine they call these 59
palace whispering smooth
that's what that was about right that's
right the turbo glide and they got a bad
rap
back in the day because a lot of them
behind 348 right and they didn't hold up
well but behind the 283
they're actually a pretty cool
transmission yeah but this car is just
so cherry the headliner I you could lie
to me and say you replace this stuff in
the carpet is just unbelievable man what
a time capsule it is
let me tell you a little about the car
the car was sold - at my shop was a
Chevrolet dealer in 1959
but when I was a young kid this belonged
to a local gas station owner and on the
days he brought this forward to work you
weren't allowed near the the air pump to
put air in your bicycle tire
ok and I always admired it was unusual
color and that was in the sixties
it was a in heated garage for 44 years
he passed away and like 1989
so it literally sat from 89 to 2012 when
i bought it
he had all the mileage written down
he put a hundred miles a year on it so
the car never got driven but who didn't
own a few years later I'd wind up buying
the building where it came from New what
car has that Providence
that's fantastic it is yeah so the
colors of these cars you might think
that people in 1959 we're colorblind but
yeah but the truth is you got a pallet
and you can order this car in any color
combinations you want as long as it was
in the color choice guide right right
right somebody chose this weird bluish
gray - color and the rose-colored
exterior have the Cameo coral I didn't
know but I found out through taking it
the different shows
it's a very rare color own palace that
means its original paint and 34,000
miles is probably the only one around
that's this color on your stored
yeah now you and I are both old enough
to have gone to drive in movies when we
were kids but I was your age is to you
know this car makes me think drive-in
movies drive-in movies make me think of
ridiculously inappropriate things
happening in the back step back see what
I'm looking at it and I don't see i see
original upholstery that's in pretty
good shape so i think i say we're safe
and remember we how many people you can
put in the trunk of this car robbery
enter this contest to get into the this
one would have definitely helped a lot
of people
yeah you know yep and i canna can a
thing that you know I do my research and
stuff
the car only weighs 3,600 pounds really
and you would expect it to be four
thousand i would i would have said not
in my head and said if you said 4,500
pounds and I was in disbelief like it
has to be wrong but every piece of
documentation i could find 3600 Wow
and a late model GT Mustang weighs about
thirty six and a half with all that
plastic yeah i know this is all steel we
were talking about the fins earlier on
and my dad had a 59 el camino when we
were kids
yeah and my dad mom would stress over
that car because of me and my brother
Blaine because my mom would stress over
us riding our bikes around that carbon
their bicycles because these fins are
deadly freaking weapon yes and my dad
must stress over us riding bikes around
the car because the handlebars as you
tried to ask you
hey mom was worried about your health
and God was worried about the car
I don't know if I mentioned Kevin work
we're riding right now is high street
and pots
and from the 50 60 70 is a tease this
was literally the cruising capital of
the east coast
ok everybody came here their hot rods
they had illegal drag racing out on the
bypass
I'm not really an attraction of course
in the last few years it's died down
they change the lane configurations and
nobody does that anymore but for 40
years this was a place the cruise
yeah Kevin you want to drive it back are
you kidding me
ok i'm not kidding you okay here
yesterday yes I do hope i can see over
the steering wheel
Wow effortless steering man yeah i don't
know if you know this or not but I grew
up in british columbia canada
ok yeah I'm is from Canada moved out of
the states in 1984
so for me to hear and read about
woodward avenue and and you know it
screws in california yet on high street
with a beautiful unrestored car cruising
this is awesome man
there's just something about being in a
car like this it just it's almost like a
form of meditation
oh you like you like this - yeah of
course we have the tube radio it needs a
warm up yeah a lot of people don't
remember that but we only got am so what
I bought as much
remember these from the seventies a
spark o matic remember spark ematic
converter typed it through the original
tube radio
so we have a mf'n through the original
sounding 59 radio with the speaker in
the center of the back seat huh
and the speaker up front so there that
there's that
well Mike I don't want to run this
odometer up anymore i'm gonna turn in
we're clocking on the miles a dealership
here and I just want to say thanks man
this is it just pull her out front of an
absolute thrill to be able to drive this
car
and I thank you I thank you for coming
in this is awesome yeah
yeah
yeah
